Abomasnow (ユキノオー, Yukinoō, Yukinooh in original Japanese language versions) is one of the Template:Pokenum fictional species of Pokémon creatures from the multi-billion-dollar[1] Pokémon media franchise – a collection of video games, anime, manga, books, trading cards and other media, created by Satoshi Tajiri. Abomasnow is famous for being one of the Pokémon revealed before the Japanese release of Pokémon Diamond and Pearl. The purpose of Abomasnow in the games, anime and manga, as with all other Pokémon, is to battle both wild Pokémon, untamed creatures encountered while the player passes through various environments, and tamed Pokémon owned by Pokémon trainers.[2]

The name Abomasnow is derived from abominable, referring to the Abominable Snowman, and snow. Its Japanese name is likely a portmanteau of the Japanese word for snow (, yuki); no (), a possessive particle; and the Japanese word for king (, ō). "Yukinooh" would literally translate to "king of snow."

Biological characteristics

Abomasnow appears to be a mix of a large yeti and a pine tree. Its paws and legs are green in color and it has white fur. Its body is round, but its head is quite strange, with two eyes hidden; its fur actually appears to be pine needles, which along with its type seem to imply it is a mobile evergreen covered in snow. The chest fur is longer on females. It also is somewhat similar to the radish spirit in the movie Spirited Away.

In the video games

Abomasnow and its pre-evolutionary stage, Snover, both introduced in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, are the only known Pokémon to have the Grass- and Ice-type combination, making them four times as weak against Fire-type Pokémon.

Abomasnow is used by the seventh Gym Leader of Sinnoh, Candice (Suzuna), at level 42, making it her strongest Pokémon.

Abomasnow can be obtained by evolving Snover. It is also able to be caught in the wild on the top of Mt. Coronet. Abomasnow has great Attack and Special Attack stats, good HP, and above average Special Defense. However, its Defense is slightly below average and its Speed is low. This, coupled with its many weaknesses, particularly Fire, makes it a easy target for a faster opponent with a strong physical attack. It has a wide moveset, however, capable of utilising its great attack stats. It can learn many attacks to counter its weaknesses such as Earthquake for Fire, Poison, and Steel, Rock Slide for Bug and Flying, and strong Grass attacks for Rock.
