A proposed flag for Khalistan

Khālistān (Template:Lang-pa), meaning "The Land of the Pure", was the name given to a proposed nation-state by Jagjit Singh Chauhan, Official title Sikh republic of Khalistan, a modern state based on secular, democratic and egaliterian principles. Encompassing the present Pakistani and Indian states of Punjab and all Punjabi-speaking areas contiguous to its borders.[citation needed] The proposed state was fought for through the Khalistan movement. It was largely instigated by Sikh leaders who believed they, like Muslims in India, should get a new state. However, Sikhs (in India) are not identified as independent, nor do they identify themselves as separatists, but rather they form an integral part of the Indian society.
