Madden NFL 08 is a forthcoming American football video game that will be published by EA Sports and developed by EA Tiburon. It will be the eighteenth installment in the Madden NFL video game franchise. The game is expected to be released August 14, 2007 for several systems, including the PlayStation 3, Wii and Xbox 360.[1][2]

Features

Graphics and gameplay

While the first two next-gen versions of Madden ran at 30 frames-per-second, Madden 08 will run at 60 frames-per-second.[3] A new branching animations system will allow truly dynamic gameplay for the first time in the franchise.[4] Players are no longer locked into animations but are now controlled more by the users.[4] Features of the new animation system include mid-air collisions, big-time, one-handed catches, hurdles and gang tackling.[4]

An updated features dubbed Hit Stick 2.0 will allow players to hit high or low by flicking the analog stick up or down.[4] A new fatigue system will be implemented, disallowing users from taking a scrambling quarterback and running around behind the line of scrimmage for very long.[3] Fatigue will also play a factor when cold-weather teams play in hot weather during the early months of the season.[4]

Presentation

Prior to games, former NFL running back and Madden NFL 2003 cover athlete Marshall Faulk will host a segment called "Marshall's Minute" in which he will discuss key star players and predict the score.[3]

Weapons (see below) will also get special introductions before games.[3]

Weapons

Certain star players have "weapons" which can enhance their performances and create game-changing plays.[5] Players with the Smart Quarterback weapon will be able to read defensive schemes as the games continue. Smart Linebackers and Smart Safeties will be able to accomplish the same thing on defense. Possession Receivers will make tough catches over the middle, Shutdown Corners will stay on even the toughest receivers and Spectacular Catch receivers will be able to leap over defenders and make difficult grabs.

Superstar Mode additions

With the addition of Campus Legend mode to the next-gen version of NCAA Football 08, players will be able to take their player from Campus Legend mode and import him into Madden's Superstar Mode.[5] In addition, players will be able to take over the careers of select rookies from the 2007 NFL Draft and use them in Superstar Mode.[5]Camera angles have also been tweaked for Madden 08 after complaints with its predecessor.[5]

Trophy room

The trophy room in Madden 08 will be similar to the My Shrine feature in NCAA Football 08.[3] Trophies can be earned by completing in-game tasks or in other game modes.[3] Trophies can also be risked in online head-to-head contests.[3] As your skill and experience progresses, you can earn five EA Challenge rings, which have customizable team logos and colors.[3]

Returning features

A number of features missing from the first two next-generation versions of Madden will be returning in Madden 08. These include Owner Mode, fantasy draft and roster-editing capabilities. According to producer David Ortiz, Owner Mode will include all features from the current-gen version plus more.[5] Alternate uniforms will also be included in the game, which were absent from next-gen Madden NFL 06 and were only available for download on the Xbox Live Marketplace for Madden NFL 07.[3]

Soundtrack

So far, only one song has been announced for the in-game soundtrack, but expect more in the coming weeks.

Cover athlete

EA Sports, the game's distributor and developers, officially announced that Vince Young would be this installment’s cover athlete on April 17.[7] Young officially announced the statement on Jimmy Kimmel Live the same day, even though many sources had prematurely stated the information.[8][9][10] According to multiple industry sources, San Diego Chargers running back LaDainian Tomlinson was originally asked to appear on the cover but declined.[11]

Trivia

  • Chicago Bears kick returner Devin Hester will have a perfect speed attribute of 100, making him the fastest player in the Madden series franchise's history.[12]
