Flower Mound High School is part of Lewisville Independent School District and located in Flower Mound, Texas. The school is located on 52 acres of land that was purchased in 1993.

History

FMHS opened its doors on August 11, 1999, to 986 freshman and sophomores and 108 staff members led by principal Norman Reuther. The school was recognized as exemplary in the charter year.[citation needed] The second year welcomed 700 incoming freshman and the student body grew to 1700 students. This was the first year for varsity sports. In order to accommodate the additional students, another wing with 45 more classrooms was completed and used for the 2000-2001 school year

August 2001 saw the beginning of the first year to have four grades, with the first senior class. The student body grew to over 2400. The Jaguars began to make their mark in all aspects of district competitions, including athletic, academic and artistic. Flower Mound High School has received outstanding recognition in many areas.

Flower Mound High School received Gold Performance Acknowledgments from the TEA in 2004-05 for: Recommended High School Program (Class of 2004); Attendance (2003-04); AP/IB Results (2003-04); College Admissions (Class of 2004); TAAS/TASP Equivalency (Class of 2004).

The 2003-04 school year saw Principal Norman Reuther leave the school; Assistant Principal Jack Clark took over the position of principal, although he recently announced his retirement for the 2008-2009 year.

Current total enrollment for the school is at 2779 students and class sizes are 25:1 in core subjects. Over half the students of FMHS are in Pre-AP or AP classes, and 85% of students go on to a 4-year college. The school has received a "Recognized" rating from the TEA.

Flower Mound High School has gone to state in the Academic UIL events Literary Criticism and Social Studies for the past three years in a row, but does not see such consistency in the other academic events.

19 students at Flower Mound High School attained National Merit Finalist status based on their October 2005 PSAT/NMSQT scores.

In March 2006, Flower Mound High School received its second consecutive Grammy Foundation Gold Award, which recognizes the top seven secondary schools in the nation in the field of music education. The 2006 Gold Award came with a $5,000 scholarship to further the musical instruction of FMHS's students.

Flower Mound High School is also subject to several rules which include: the banning of band t-shirts, a no tolerance holes in jeans policy, and a $15 cell phone return policy if caught anywhere on campus. Among many things, FMHS is very popular among Flower Mound youth for their frequent unwanted searches and seizures, PAS (ISS) frequencies, and cellphone jamming.

In 2005 FMHS was made infamous when members of the schools administration held members of the wrestling team for questioning without consent from a guardian. School officials, along with police, illegally questioned individuals in accordance with an ongoing police investigation about a party the wrestling team was involved in. A full investigation of the administration and the Flower Mound Police Department is nearly completed by the Texas Rangers and Denton County Sheriffs Office. Only one student has been convicted.

Choir

The FMHS Choral program consists of four large ensembles (Varsity & JV Mixed, Varsity & JV Treble) and two smaller Jazz ensembles (Shades of Blue and Azure).

The Jaguar Chorale recently performed at the TMEA Convention in San Antonio on February 28th in addition to performing Mozart's Requiem with Colleyville-Heritage & Hebron High School earlier in the 2006-2007 school year.

Orchestra

The FMHS Orchestra consists of two groups of musical ensembles. The symphonic orchestra is the lower of the two groups and consists primarily of freshman and sophomores with few juniors and seniors. The chamber orchestra is primarily seniors with talented sophomores, juniors, and even some freshmen. Both ensembles are award-winning and have won many prizes in the region, district, and Dallas metroplex. The FMHS Orchestra also has some of the most talented musicians in the state, if not the country. Numerous musicians in the orchestra have made all-district and all-region orchestras, and some have even made the all-state orchestra. The FMHS Orchestra takes regular trips to perform and compete in competitions.
