High School Musical is the soundtrack of the Disney Channel Original Movie, of the same name, it was released on January 10, 2006 and was the best selling album of 2006,[1] selling 6,469 copies in its first week and climbed to #1 on the Billboard album chart in early March and again in late March of 2006. It has been certified 4x Platinum.[2]

The album has also reached #1 on both the iTunes Best Selling Albums and on Amazon.com's Top Sellers for Music, as well as producing five songs on the iTunes Top 10 Best Selling Songs, and also producing five Top 40 hit singles on the Billboard Hot 100. The High School Musical soundtrack is also the first TV soundtrack to be No.1 in the Billboard since Miami Vice.

A 2-disc special edition version of the soundtrack was released by Walt Disney Records on May 23, 2006. It features all of the track listings from the original release, plus karaoke versions of all the songs.

Mainstream success

In the soundtrack's first week, it debuted at #143 on the Billboard 200. In its second week, it jumped 85 spots to #58 on the Billboard 200 chart and was labeled Pacesetter by Billboard. In its third week, it jumped 48 spots to #10 and has since reached #1 for two nonconsecutive weeks. It is certified 4x Platinum.[3] According to Billboard.com, High School Musical is the best selling album of 2006 with sales of over 3 million records. However, it is one of the lowest selling albums to be a top seller of its year since Nielsen SoundScan began recording data in 1991.

As of July 30, 2006, the soundtrack has peaked at #1 on the Australian ARIA top 50 albums chart. It stayed in that position for 2 consecutive weeks and has been certified platinum. It also peaked at #1 on the New Zealand RIANZ top 40 albums chart and has been certified platinum. Also, as of September 10, 2006, the soundtrack has peaked at #1 on the Argentinian CAPIF albums chart. The soundtrack debuted at 28 on the Brazilian Top 40 CD Sales chart and was #1 for the week ending October 7, 2006.

The album peaked at number one on the Australian ARIA charts, and two singles were released. "Breaking Free" only peaked in the low teens, but hung around in the charts for close to three months. "We're All In This Together" failed to debut inside the top 50.

Worthy of mention is most of-if not all-the songs on the soundtrack received little to no airplay on conventional radio stations within the US. The success of the album is largely due to so many of the cuts being in heavy rotation on The Walt Disney Company's owned and operated Radio Disney outlet.

  • US Chart Position: #1 (2 weeks)
  • US Sales:

RIAA Certification: 4x Platinum (according to this week's issue of billboard charts, week of January 27-February 3, 2007)

  • On some cd's there is a misprint,on the side of the cd it says "WALT DISNEY RECORDS PRESEN" the T is missing from PRESENT.
  • Another misprint can be found in the inside booklet of the album where Lucas Grabeel's name is mispelled to read "Lucas Gabreel"
