This article contains a summary of the second season of the American drama/adventure television series Lost , which aired first in the USA and Canada from September 21, 2005 to May 24, 2006.
In addition to the twenty-three regular episodes in season two, three special episodes were made which provided recaps and insights into the show's mysteries. The executive producers for the second season were J.J. Abrams, Damon Lindelof, Bryan Burk, Jack Bender and Carlton Cuse. Island plot summary
A prominent theme from the first scene of the season is the exploration of the Hatch that was discovered in Season 1. It is revealed to be a scientific bunker of some sort, which has running water and electricity, is well stocked with food, and has a 1970s era computer, which, according to its previous occupant, Desmond, must have the numbers 4, 8, 15, 16, 23 and 42 typed into it every 108 minutes, or "the world will end." A black and white "flip card" timer on the wall counts the minutes down, and an alarm sounds four minutes before the deadline.
The survivors debate whether or not to trust Desmond's instructions, but set up shifts to keep watch. They gradually learn through bits of filmstrip that what they had referred to as "the hatch" is actually the "Swan station", one of several different DHARMA Initiative stations.

Sawyer and Michael deal with the chaos after the attack on their raft, and the disappearance of Jin and Walt. They create a makeshift raft from floating wreckage, and the currents push them back to the island, where they encounter a panicked Jin, and then the tail section survivors, who are led by Ana Lucía. She initially directs that Sawyer, Jin and Michael be held captive, but they eventually reconcile, and then all head together to the other side of the island to reunite with the rest of the survivors. Along the way, they worry about contact with The Others, and in a moment of confusion, Ana Lucia shoots and kills Shannon.
Claire learns how to be a new mother, and wrestles with whether or not to trust Charlie, who at one point suffers delusions that he has to protect the baby, but his actions in fact endanger the child. This is part of a theme of dreams and hallucinations that afflict many of the survivors, in ways both good and bad. The Others become a more visible presence in this season, though they often try to disguise their name and appearances. Tom, for example, wears a fake beard. In one encounter with The Others Tom tells the survivors, "This is not your island, this is our island, and the only reason you're living on it is because we let you live on it." He also scolds them for "opening doors that they shouldn't be opening".
Rousseau captures a man who identifies himself as "Henry Gale, from Minnesota", another castaway on the island who had arrived by balloon. He insists at first that he is not one of The Others, but the survivors doubt his story, hold him captive in The Swan, and brutally interrogate him. He maintains his story for several days, but finally confesses when faced with proof of his deception (the ID of the real Henry Gale), he admits that he is indeed one of "The Others".
At the same time Locke, who became trapped before he could enter the number codes, asks Henry Gale to enter the codes by crawling through the air vents. As the countdown reaches zero, a map appears on a blast door, detailing an octagonal arrangement of stations on the island.
Later, Gale claims to have never entered the code as everything returns to normal, tarnishing Locke's beliefs.
Following dreams and the map, Eko and Locke discover the central "?"(Pearl) station, which appears to be a station designed to observe the occupants of the other stations. When they learn that its earlier occupants were tasked with observing their own Swan station, Locke believes that entering the numbers is merely a psychological experiment, and does not "save the world". This puts Locke, who had originally been a strong proponent of entering the numbers, into a crisis of faith, but seems to make Eko even more sure of what he must do, and they switch roles. Inside, Locke also finds a printout of the log entry of the numbers from the Swan computer.
Michael continues to seek his kidnapped son, Walt. After an apparent conversation with his son on the computer in The Swan, he makes his way alone to find "The Others" at their camp. He is allowed to spend three minutes with his son, who pleads for rescue. They let Michael go, promising him Walt back, if he frees Henry, and brings only Jack, Kate, Sawyer, and Hurley back to their camp. He returns to The Swan, kills Ana Lucia and Libby, frees Henry, and shoots himself in the shoulder, thus making it appear that Henry escaped by killing the two women and wounding Michael. During the two survivors' memorial, Desmond returns in a sailboat, drunk.
Michael convinces Jack, Kate, Sawyer, and Hurley to join him in a raid against "The Others" to rescue Walt, but Sayid believes that Michael is leading the four into a trap and informs only Jack. Sayid's plan is to use Desmond's sailboat to approach camp of "The Others" by water. He enlists the help of Jin, who knows how to sail, and Sun who will translate.
Despite Jack's foreknowledge of Michael's plans, "The Others" ambush and capture the raiding party. Henry, who turns out to have some authority among "The Others", fulfills the deal, freeing Michael and Walt and giving them a boat. As Michael is freed, Jack, Kate, Sawyer, and Hurley learn fully of how he has betrayed them: he killed Ana Lucia and Libby, freed Henry, and now has delivered the four survivors to "The Others". Hurley is freed and instructed to go back to his camp to tell the other survivors that they may never go back there.
In the meantime, Sayid, Sun and Jin, arrive at The Others' camp, which has been abandoned. They discover a door to what appears to be another DHARMA Initiative station; however, it is fake. They start a signal fire, and wait for Jack and his party to rendezvous with them.
Locke and Desmond take over the The Swan station from Eko and prevent him from entering the numbers at the appointed time. Both of them argue over the validity of the threat until the last minute when, looking at the log, Desmond realizes the last time the code was not put through was the day of the plane crash. When the timer reaches zero, a great magnetic field erupts, forcing several objects to fly towards a strong point of magnetism in The Swan. Desmond says he is going to "save" Locke, and goes to the system termination station under the floor, which he activates by turning the key. The immediate result is not shown, but the entire island is enveloped by a white-violet light and a shrill humming sound.
The season ends with a scene of a cramped polar research station where two men excitedly notice what appears to be the anomaly, and they proceed to phone Desmond's old fiancée, Penelope, to tell her that they have "found it".
By the end of the second season, the survivors have been on the island for 67 days (set at November 27, 2004).
