During the independecy, Duarte was exiled from the country by the Haitian government. Pedro Santana Gained the presidency due to his merits in battle. During this firs Dominican Government, an economical and social slump called referenced later by historians as "La España Boba" led Santana to annex the country once again to Spain, only to be restaured by Gregorio Luperon on August 16, 1863.

Original research

This article contains claims that are not backed by any source (mostly because they are not true). For the moment, as I don't have more time, I will post an "original research" or "unverified claims" to the article if no one provides for a correction in a reasonable amount of time. original article was not neutral

I have made some edits in order to give a more full picture of who Juan Pablo Duarte was and his influences. Please allow some time for the supporting documents to come in. The original article was written from the pro-duate perspective which contained many references to the greatness of his character. This version with of course some flaws, presents a more balanced picture especally in the context of world wide views.

Unfortunately the textbooks of the Dominican Republic and of scholars native to the country tend to be biased, since the entire history of the country was re-written between 1931 and 1975 during the Trujillo and Balaguer regimes. As a matter of fact Ballageur made the reference to Duarte comparing him with Jesus Christ and those textbooks are still in use today. The connection between the post-reconstruction South and the Dominican War of Independence is well known as is the Connection between Duarte's philosophies and those of the Order of Preachers who are also called the Dominicans. That connection may have been erased by Trujillo but there are documents to prove otherwise. Please allow time for them to manifest themselves. In the meantime feel free to edit my addtions if you feel they need a more neutral stance. But do not attempt to hide the racism of the Trinitarios, that is the key to understanding the racism that lives in the republic today. It just didn't start with trujillo.
