Union Institute and University is a leader in providing non-traditional education at the bachelor's, master's, and doctoral level. Begun as a consortium of univerities in 1964 called The Union for Research and Experimentation in Higher Education, it latter became an independent degree-granting institution calling itself The University Without Walls (1971), and then The Union Institute (1989). After acquiring Vermont College in 2001, it was renamed Union Institute and University.

With headquarters in Cincinnati, Ohio, Union Institute and University is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. Its web site is www.tui.edu
