On August 18, 1976 a group of American Soliders and South Korean workers were sent out to trim a poplar tree that was obstructing view of an observation post. They met resistance from a North Korean patrol who attacked the patrol resulting in the death of two US soldiers.

As a result, Operation Paul Bunyan was organized and carried out August 21 invloving United States Army Corps of Engineers, supporting infantry, and aircraft which successfully cut down the tree.

This led to increased tensions along the Korean Demilitarized Zone, but did not lead to full scall war.
