I've been interested in Wikipedia for a couple of years, though I only recently (late October 2006) saw fit to actually make a userpage and make pages, instead of simply reverting vandalism and correcting minor typos. Although reverting vandalism/spam/ads is what I do now more than anything else on WP, so I think I've come full circle.

Vandalfighting/Spam removal

I've been fighting vandalism (mostly spam) on Wikipedia since mid-November 2006; it's a thankless job, and you tend to get flamed for it (one guy wanted to get my userpage deleted since it's on a non-notable subject [me]). Also, you sometimes get people who read the comments other people leave and assume 'Oh, someone said something bad about him! He must be a bad person!' instead of realizing that this sort of job is going to get you a lot of flak from people that is totally unjustified (though I do make mistakes sometimes).

A while back, I wrote a script to parse the logs from the linkwatcher to see how many times/day each link was added and who added them. The main page for the output can be found on User:Veinor/Link count.

Weird stuff

  • This is why you don't just use Wikipedia for your paper.
  • Paid admins? Worst. Idea. Ever.
