References?

I can't seem to locate a good reference for this theorem. The Narasimhan and Ramanan paper cites some lecture notes by Chern, but these notes are unavailable to me. I have an unsettling feeling that there may be no definitive reference, but that it is one of those theorems of mathematical folklore -- passed from teacher to student by word of mouth.
