Template:Wikinewsportal This is a list of UFO sighting including cases of alleged alien sightings and abductions. Some cases are popularly known, and have become folklore. Others are more obscure, and known mainly to ufologists and enthusiasts.

1492-10-11 From Christopher Columbus' Journal Logs - 5 hours before the discovery of the New World - While patrolling the deck of the Santa Maria at about 10:00 PM, Columbus thought he saw "a light glimmering at a great distance." He hurriedly summoned Pedro Gutierrez, "a gentleman of the king's bedchamber," who also saw the light. After a short time it vanished, only to reappear several times during the night, each time dancing up and down "in sudden and passing gleams, like the flickering wick of a candle" The light, first seen four hours before land was sighted, was never explained." 1 [2]
1566-08-07 Basel Switzerland Black globes flooded the sky above the town. 1 [3]

1800-03-29 Quedlinburg Germany Prediger Fritsch saw a tiny spot crossing the sun in 6 hours. 1 [4]
1802-02-27 Prediger Fritsch saw a tiny spot, similar to his 1800 sightings, crossing the sun in northwestern-direction and accelerated thereby. 1 [4]
1868 Copiapó Chile A strange "aerial construction" bearing lights and making engine noises flew low over this town. Local people also described it as a giant bird covered with large scales producing a metallic noise. Although not an actual landing, this is the first instance of close observation of an unknown object at low altitude in the nineteenth century. 1 [5]
1886-10-18 Maracaibo Venezuela The US consul of Venezuela in Maracaibo reports to Scientific American that a bright object, accompanied with a humming noise, appeared over a hut near Maracaibo. The people in the hut showed afterward symptoms of a sickness, which one would today interpret as radiation disease. The trees surrounding the hut withered after nine days. 2 [6]
1897-04-19 Aurora Texas UFO Incident Aurora, Texas United States An alleged UFO crash. 2 [7]
1926 Nicholas Roerich, Russian explorer and artist, while traveling with his companions through Central Asia reported in his travel diary that one of them spotted a silver metallic disc above the Himalayas. The entire group then watched the disc through binoculars for some time until it disappeared beyond mountain peaks. 1 [8]

1942-02-24 West Coast air raid Los Angeles, California United States Unidentified aerial objects trigger the military to fire thousands of anti-aircraft rounds into the sky and raised the wartime alert status. 1
1946 Ghost rockets Objects with characteristics of cruise missiles sighted repeatedly all over Scandinavia—Swedish Defense Staff expressed concern. 1
1946-05-18 UFO-Memorial Ängelholm Ängelholm Municipality Sweden Gösta Karlsson claimed observing a UFO landing. On the site, a model of a flying saucer was erected. 3 [9]

1947-06-21 Maury Island incident Washington United States A highly controversial story, where a dog was killed, a boy injured by UFOs, and the witness threatened by Men in Black. 2

1948-01-07 Mantell UFO Incident Kentucky United States US Air Force sent a fighter pilot to check a UFO sighting. 2

1951-08-25 Lubbock Lights Lubbock, Texas United States Lights were repeatedly spotted; they were witnessed by science professors from Texas Tech University and photographed by a Texas Tech student. 1
1952-07-13 1952 Washington D.C. UFO incident Washington, D.C. United States A series of sightings with radar contacts that lead to the implementation of the Robertson Panel by the CIA. 1

1952-07-09 Germany Oskar Linde, the former mayor of Gleimarshausen (Germany), saw a disc-shaped object on a forest clearing near Hasselbach, Thuringia with two strange looking men, who worked around it. He took them for Russian military staff. The object, which was seen by several witnesses, left a trace on the ground. 3 [11][12]
1953-08-05 Ellsworth UFO Case Bismarck, North Dakota United States UFO seen as a red glowing light and is witnessed by forty-five people. The sighting takes place over a two night period. 1
1953-11-23 Felix Moncla U.S Air Force Pilot disappears while pursuing a UFO. 2
1955-08-21 Kelly-Hopkinsville encounter Kentucky United States A group of strange, goblin-like creatures bullied a family, while the family shot at them. 3
1957 Antonio Villas Boas Brazil Claimed to have been abducted. 4
1957-11-02 Levelland UFO Case Levelland, Texas United States Numerous motorists around report seeing a strange egg-shaped object which caused their engines to shut off. When the object flew away, their vehicles would restart and work normally. 2
1961-02-17 Europe NATO radar stations detected 50 unidentified objects coming from Soviet Union and flying at high speed over Europe. As cold war was in its zenith, one feared the outbreak of World War III. Luckily, these objects vanished after 9 minutes. Possibly an astronomer on Potsdam observatory saw a transit of an unknown object in front of the sun at those days. 1 [13][14]
1961-09-19 Betty and Barney Hill abduction United States Widely publicized alien abduction experience. 4
1964-04-24 Lonnie Zamora Socorro, New Mexico United States Zamora, a police officer reports a close encounter. 3
1965 Exeter incident Exeter, New Hampshire United States A UFO was seen by a teenager and two police officers. 1

1966 The Mothman Prophecies Point Pleasant, West Virginia United States A wave of sightings occur, believed to be connected to a set of other mysterious events. 1
1966-04-06 Clayton South, Victoria Australia A sighting by hundreds of people in the suburb. This incident is also known as "The Clayton Incident" after the adjoining suburb, apparently the incident occurred on th boundary. Witness's gather for infrequent reunions. None [15]

1967-10-04 Shag Harbour incident Shag Harbour, Nova Scotia Canada UFO crash, object seen crashing into Shag Harbor followed by Canadian naval search; officially referred to as a UFO crash. None

1970s Somerset County, Maine United States Sheriff Barry A. DeLong witnessed a UFO, "They were hovering about 15 feet from my cruiser, late at night. It had fixed lights that were spinning. It was huge, and oval-shaped. I knew it wasn't a jet fighter. It slowly started backing off toward Sugarloaf, and then at a terrific speed." 1 [16]

1978-05-10 Emilcin abduction Emilcin Poland A man at Emilcin in Poland is said to be abducted by grays. On the site, where this should have taken place, there is now a memorial. 4

1978-10-21 Valentich Disappearance Victoria Australia An Australian pilot reported a UFO to air traffic control before vanishing without a trace. 1
1978-12-21 Kaikoura lights South Island New Zealand A series of sightings by a Safe Air freight plane; the airplane is escorted by strange lights of changing color and size. 1
1979 Robert Taylor Incident A man witnessed a UFO landing, was pulled towards the craft, and blacked out for several days. Unexplained physical evidence found on the site. 4 [18]
1979-08-27 Val Johnson Incident Marshall County, Minnesota United States A deputy sheriff spotted a strange bright light which seems to have collided with, and damaged, his patrol car. The deputy also suffered temporary eye damage from the "light". 2
1979-11-11 Manises UFO Incident Valencia Spain Three large UFOs forced a civil flight to made an emergency landing in Manises airport. 1
1980 Rendlesham Forest Incident Suffolk England A sighting in taken at first as a downed aircraft. 3
1980-12-29 Cash-Landrum incident Dayton, Texas United States A huge diamond-shaped UFO irradiates three witnesses. They had to be treated for radiation poisoning and have since sued the US government, as military helicopters were seen with the UFO. 2
1981-01-08 Trans-en-Provence Case Trans-en-Provence, Var France A mutual UFO-landing, which left interesting traces. 3 [19]
1985 Tbilisi-sighting Soviet commercial airliners crew and passengers observed a strange light during a flight from Tbilisi in Georgia to Tallinn in Estonia in January. 1
1985-12-26 Whitley Strieber Alleged abductee and paranormal writer, Strieber wrote on his experiences in his national best-seller novel Communion. In a 1996 Larry King interview, Strieber denied the event and stated that it never happened. He currently hosts a nighttime radio show Dreamland which is similar to the Coast To Coast AM radio show in its format. 3
1986 Brazil Noite oficial dos OVNIs (UFO's Official Night), more than 20 UFOs are seen and captured in radar in various parts of the country. Colonel Ozires Silva, former Embraer and at the time Petrobras President, flying a Xingu PT-MBZ aircraft near the place, is informed and tries to pursue the UFOs, later declaring “The lights were primary targets in the radar, positive targets, a concrete thing”. Two Northrop F-5 and three Mirage III are ultimately sent to intercept the UFOs. After radar and visual sightings, the objects disappeared. In the aftermath, Brigadier Otávio Júlio Moreira Lima, at the time the Ministry of Aeronautics, public declared - "Between 20:00 (19/05) and 01:00 (20/05) at least 21 objects have been detected by Brazilian radars.[...]We can only give technical explanations and we do not have them.[...]It’s fantastic, the radar signals were very clear." 2 [20]
1986-01-29 Height 611 UFO Incident Dalnegorsk, Primorsky Krai USSR An alleged UFO crash, followed by an alleged UFO landing in 1989. 1
1986-11-17 Alaska United States A group of UFOs flew with Japan Air Lines Flight 1628 in northeastern Alaska for 50 minutes. One of the objects was detected by military radar trailing behind the Boeing 747. 1 [21]
1987-11-11 Gulf Breeze UFO incident Gulf Breeze, Florida United States 2
1990-11-07 Montreal, Quebec Canada More than 40 people, including policemen, observe a UFO for more than 3 hours above a hotel in downtown. 1 [22]
1992 Steven M. Greer Alton Barnes, Wiltshire England CSETI team experiences a close encounter with a "100-foot diameter" UFO while they were on Woodborough Hill, located on a 1,000 acres farm. 5 [23][24]
1993 Steven M. Greer Mexico CSETI team experiences a close encounter with a triangular UFO and the "extremely luminous and white" extraterrestrials within it, while near Popocatépetl volcano, on a road towards an Indian village called Atlimayaya, located near Atlixco and Metepec, Mexico. 5 [25]
1994 Meng Zhaoguo Incident Wuchang China Meng claimed to have had sexual intercourse with an alien and to have been later abducted. 4
1996-01-20 Varginha UFO incident Varginha, Minas Gerais Brazil Multiple sightings of strange creatures. 5
1997 Area 51: The Alien Interview Area 51, Nevada United States A supposed video of an alien interview. 5
1997-03-13 Phoenix Lights Nevada, Arizona, and New Mexico United States A strange set of lights are seen over Nevada and Arizona and possibly New Mexico. 1
1997-08-06 Mexico City Mexico On a hazy day an amateur cameraman with a digital camera captured astounding footage of a UFO passing behind and above several buildings. Air traffic was restricted that day except for two helicopters. 1 [26][27]
2000 Middle East Residents in North western Pakistan and eastern Afghanistan claimed to have sen strange lights in the sky.The then-ruling Taliban regime suspected that the United States was targeting Al-Quaida training camps or that Pakistan was testing new missiles.This suspicion was discounted after the lights were seen heading back towards the sky.They were seen again within two weeks.Both the US and Pakistan government denied the use of missiles at the reported time. 1 [28]
2004-03-05 2004 Mexican UFO Incident Mexico A drug-smuggling air patrol recorded what are claimed by some to be UFOs on infrared camera (footage released by Jaime Maussan), while others have claimed the objects to be oil platform burn-off flares. 2 [29]
2004-10-27 Woodside, Queens United States Five Flying Saucers appeared ; they were seen throughout the whole Queens and Manhattan area. They disappeared one at a time. 1 [30]
2005-04-27 Washington, D.C. United States White House evacuated as UFO enters restricted air space, then disappears. It was explained as "probably a cloud or several birds." 1 [31]
2006-05-25 Kent England Oval orb observed hovering above a location in Kent at some distance. Then moved off in a westerly direction. 1 [32][33]
2006-06-24 Vatican City A Polish tourist photographed a UFO hovering near the Vatican Basilic's Cuppola. 1 [34]
2006-08-17 Nanjing China A UFO was recorded hovering over an apartment building. 1 [35][36][37]
2006-08-21 Ajax, Ontario Canada A UFO was photographed 8-10 kilometers west from the Pickering Nuclear Power Plant. 1 [38]
2006-11-07 Chicago O'Hare UFO sighting 2006 Chicago, Illinois United States A group of United Airlines employees, including pilots, profess to seeing a mysterious, saucer-shaped craft, that did not have lights and hovered over a Chicago O'Hare Airport terminal before shooting up through the clouds. 2007-01-10 Kerman Iran Eyewitnesses told the Fars News Agency (FNA) that a radiant UFO had crashed in the Barez Mounts in the morning. 1 Wikinews
2007-01-03 Bahçelievler, Istanbul Turkey At nighttime, people claimed that they had seen a UFO flying in the sky, the Turkish newspaper Sabah reports. They said that the UFO was glowing with white lights and that it revolved around itself. 1 Wikinews

2007-03-03 New Delhi India A green fireball was seen by 10 pilots over Delhi. 1 [44]
2007-03-07 New Delhi India Two UFO's were detected very close to the prime minister's residence. 1 [45]
2007-03-10 Cleveland, Ohio United States UFO seen over a peace rally. 1 [46]
2007-04-23 Channel Islands Two airline pilots on separate flights spot UFOs off the coast of Alderney. 1 Wikinews [47]
2007-05-02 Sutton John Gregory spotted a UFO after 10pm, saying, "I was looking at the sky and saw this object because it was very bright. At first I thought it was a star but now I am not sure and would love to know what it was. It was very unusual and I was rather surprised to see it. It was very clear and could be seen for miles around. The image stayed in the sky for about 20 minutes and then just vanished and I have not seen it since. The image seemed to have a face, nose and a mouth, it was very strange and I have never seen anything like it before." 1 [48]
2007-05-11 Massillon, Ohio United States At 10:40 pm, Rosemary Lyons and a co-worker were taking a smoke break outside the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge, 2935 Lincoln Way W., when they witnessed a UFO, estimated to be 60 feet in diameter. Lyons described the incident as follows, "The first thing I said was 'Oh my gosh. Look at that,' We saw it for 20 to 25 seconds. It was round and luminous underneath. It wasn't a plane, it wasn't a helicopter, it wasn’t a blimp and it wasn't a balloon. It made absolutely no sound. It was flying over just carefree – like it was no one's business." 1 [49]
2007-05-12 Bangor, County Down, Northern Ireland United Kingdom During the evening, orange colored UFOs were spotted. Clifford Rossbottom said, "There were three orange globes - nearly in a straight line - they were an absolutely fascinating sight. I watched them for five minutes, and then very slowly, they just disappeared. The only thing I thought it could have been was three high-flying aircraft. If that is not the case, then I have no idea, and the only other thing I can think of is in fact that they were UFOs." Belfast International Airport's air traffic control received calls from people (including the Coastguard) who spotted the objects, and the airport said there were no records of aircrafts at the area during the time of the sightings. 1 [50]
2007-05-28 Bangalore India Afzal Khan told CNN IBN that he photographed a UFO, "Today (Monday) at around 9 pm (IST), I and my brothers saw a bright, slow-moving object which looked like a group of lights moving in a triangular formation in the sky towards west/north-west direction. This object was definitely not an aeroplane as it was moving very slowly. We observed the object from around 9 pm until 9.30 pm before it disappeared into the distance. During this time we managed to take some pictures with my camera. The astronomical/space/science departments of any activity in the sky during the above time can be confirmed. We live in Jayanagar area of Bangalore. Another thing that we noticed during this time was an aircraft that took-off from Bangalore Airport was flying very close to this object. It is possible that the pilot of that aircraft could have spotted this object as well." 1 [51]
