Pucca / Pucca Funny Love [Hangul:뿌까] is an online Macromedia Flash/computer-generated imagery animated series from the South Korean company Vooz Character Systems and Jetix.

The main character Pucca (Poo-Ka) is the youngest daughter of a Chinese noodle house owner. Pucca is in love with the traveling ninja whose name is "Garu" (Gaa-roo). However, he desperately tries to avoid Pucca's advances, and (usually) does not return her affection. It has been suggested that Pucca and Garu are actually in a boyfriend/girlfriend relationship, but Pucca is a bit too amorous for Garu's taste, and therefore Garu tries to avoid any "unnecessary" affection from her, often resulting in failure.

Many greeting cards and flash episodes center around Pucca's comical attempts to steal a kiss from Garu and the competition at times between the two characters. While Garu is a skilled ninja, Pucca always seems to best him in combat, unintentional competition, and simply by sheer wit. There is little to no dialogue in these flash cartoons so that fans all over the world can enjoy them. The most popular place for westerners to access the Pucca Funny Love cartoon series is Puccaclub.com.

The characters are quite popular in Europe and Asia, with TV animation in cartoon channels in Europe and South America. These animations are compiled into a DVD, available in Germany. A UK children's book publisher (Hodder's) has also published a series of Pucca children books. In Israel, a Pucca branded snack was launched on May, 2006.

There is also an on-going manhwa series in Korea, and translated into Chinese and German, of Pucca and Garu travelling around the world through an enchanted board game.

The Canadian-produced animated series by Studio B Productions can be seen in the United States on Toon Disney's Jetix line-up on Monday and Friday nights.

Main Characters

Pucca

Pucca

Age 10, birth date July 7th, Pucca is the main character. She is hopelessly in love with Garu, and is always trying to steal kisses from him. (He always tries to run away, but she always gets him.) Pucca never talks in the series, but she makes giggling, kissing, and growling sounds. It is mentioned by Ching that she has a pretty singing voice. She also sometimes inflates. She is very cute but can sometimes go red in the face(means Angry!)Usually at Tobe or if Garu runs away from her. Pucca doesn't talk in the show, but has been heard talking a few times. Pucca also delivers noodles from the restruant on her motorcycle. Pucca has been seen sometimes hanging with Garu. Her eyes are never open but in Dance Pucca Dance she wore a costume that looks like Garu and she open her eyes.

Garu

File:Garu.JPG
Garu

Age 12, birthday December 2, he is the descendant of ancient and selfish Ninja, and aims to restore his family to their rightful crown position. But since the realization of Pucca's love for him, Garu is torn between family and his relationship with Pucca (even though he mostly does not show any affection at all). Like Pucca, he does not talk at all in the TV series but once talked in an episode called the treasure of the comfy sofa, continuing to only use the sounds from the Flash cartoons. It's explained in the TV series that he's taken a vow of silence, but in the show, we hear the voice of Garu, played by one of his clones in "Romancing the Clone". He will immediately accept a quest if told it will bring him "great honor". Like Pucca, Garu is most capable of superhuman athletics and endurance (such as running around the entire world without tiring), but not to the same degree. In "Woolen Worrior", Garu achieves the legendary ninja rank of Firefly Ninja alongside Pucca. He is the enemy of a ninja gang whose leader is Tobe. Garu has been able to escape from Pucca's advances a few time, but Pucca often finds a way to catch him in the end. He and Tobe are mortal enemies. In one episode he blew out a kiss to Pucca but only so that she would follow him to the noodle restaurant.

3 Master Chefs

The owners/chefs of the Goh-Wong Chinese restaurant, and Pucca's guardians. They cook Zzangzzangmeon noodles as a team, with Linguini or Woo Wuh twisting the noodles, Uncle Dumpling or Jang Toong chopping up the vegetables, and Ho igniting the dishes with his bare hands. They hold their noodles in very high regard, and possess a culinary honor system. In "Chef Slump," it is revealed the chef brothers are actually quite adept in athletics and martial arts (but in a cooking matter). Dumpling, for example, can handle his knives like swords.

Abyo

File:Abyo.jpg
Abyo

A friendly and sadis rival of Garu, whose appearance resembles that of Bruce Lee. A running gag with Abyo is he rips off his own shirt when he is excited for whatever reason. He will rip off his shirt at least once per episode that he appears in. Abyo is the son of Bruce, the police chief of Sooga. In an episode, he is unintentionally kissed by Pucca when she was really supposed to kiss Garu. In a few episodes he is kissed intentionally by Ching. He practices with his Nunchuks. He is unaware of Ching's love for him, although he may return the same feelings. He has issues with ripping his clothes off as seen in "Peace Out" where he was with the dolphins when they ripped off his trunks.

Ching

File:Chingimage.jpg
Ching

Ching is Pucca's best friend. She is very skilled in swordplay. Her pet chicken named Won sits on her head. When Won is scared, she will lay magical eggs. Ching is also in love with Abyo (one-sided). She would like him to be her husband, as he may one day be an action star. She is a very sweet girl and has no enemies except Garu sometimes. she is the daughter of Chang. She is ofen seen with Pucca but sometimes seen hanging with Garu and Abyo.

First appeared in a Christmas story, but later began to appear frequently, showing what he does while it is not Christmas. He is mainly used for comic relief. He is usually an unwitting victim of Pucca when she is after Garu, for example when he dressed up like Garu to get chocolates from Pucca, (and was beaten with a tree afterwards...) In one episode it is shown that Santa is also signing up to become a ninja like Garu. He is seen in every episode, except for a couple. It has been revealed that before he became Santa, he was known as a thief by the name of Red Lanturn who used to work in pair with a black ninja named Black Powder.

Villains

Tobe

File:TobeandNinjaGang.jpg
Tobe and his Ninja Gang

A ninja, a few years older than Garu, who wants to defeat Garu at all costs. He uses two swords in battle, and has many ninja at his beck and call, but their intelligence is quite lacking. Tobe is barely able to defeat Garu however, much less Pucca. He is also unaware of Jing-Jing's love for him.In Evil love he gets hit by a cupid arrow and sees Jing-Jing first! In the television series, he often makes quips that range from melodramatic to just plain ridiculous.(i.e. "The fly is walking right into my web-like...mousetrap.") Tobe has an x-shaped scar between his eyes and usually wears his ninja mask, showing only the above. However, Tobe has been seen without his mask a couple times before, in which he has a samurai ponytail.

The Vagabond Ninja Clan

A trio of gypsy crooks. They don't get up to much evil, mostly performing petty crimes. They are Binggure or Clown (kicked out of circus for not being able to laugh, left-hand man to Jing-Jing), Jumong or Shaman (a bungling magician, right-hand man to Jing-Jing), and Jing-Jing or Chief (the female boss of the Vagabond Ninja Clan). Jing-Jing is in love with Tobe (one-sided), and is in fact married to him as of the episode "Evil Love".Chief is in trouble like when she stole a ring from "Santa"

Muji

Another of Sooga's resident villains. He is obsessed with grooming his (apparently sentient) moustache, and uses genetic mutants known as Xombies as minions. In the episode "Ping Pong Pucca" he teamed up with Tobe to win. In "A better boyfriend" he kidnaps Ching to get more grooming prouducts.

Ring Ring

File:Ring Ring (Pucca).jpg
The pretty Ring Ring

A very pretty, yet narcissistic and selfish girl, who sees Pucca as a rival to her beauty. When she loses her temper she transforms into a robed, red-faced screaming warrior, who uses her bright blue hair as a weapon. In this form, she is a match for even Pucca's fighting skills, once even undoing Pucca's hair during a fight. She is an opera singer. She is loved by Dada, who tried in vain to ask her out. She has a pet Shih-tzu named Yuni. Much to Pucca's distaste, Ring Ring also has "feelings" for Garu to make her jealous. In the episode "A Ring Ring Touch" Ring Ring kissed Garu when Pucca was a model, just to make Pucca mad. Also, in "Soap Opera", Ring Ring brags about her new "cool" boyfriend. (see Dada)

Cat Clan

They are rivals to Mio for Yani's love. The Cat Clan are always committing crimes and causing trouble. There is a chance that they may be The Vagabonds' pet cats. However, the leader (The Chinese straw hatted cat) has been seen with Chang a couple times, so it's possible he may be his cat. They are also in in love with Yani Pucca's cat.

Doga

An evil wizard similar to Shaman, but far more capable in magic. She has been usually seen in the background, but once had her laundry mixed up with Ching's. Her sock made anyone who touched it evil, while Ching's sock made her good.

Allies

Dada

A luckless dishwasher at the restaurant. He is nervous and highstrung, often to the point where he wets himself. He has an unreciprocated crush on Ring-Ring. He once became Ring-Ring's boyfriend in Soap Opera, thanks to Mister Dishey, a bubble genie that came out of a dishwashing soap bottle.

Master Soo

A Jewish deity-like man who is always surrounded by beautiful handmaidens. He acts as a being of all knowledge, and is often seen riding on a cloud. Garu admires him. In "Woolen Worrior", Soo is revealed to be one of the few legendary Fire Wasp Ninja.

Ssoso

A young Buddhist monk who is very calm and collected, often speaking in proverbs and wise sayings. He practised martial arts many years in a Shaolin temple, but left there to seek better martial art skills. He is a martial art rival to Abyo. Ssoso is somewhat blind. Ssoso once got angry in the episode "Peace out"

Mio

Garu's beloved black cat. He is often seen with his master, usually on his head or helping in his training/meditation. It is said the time can be told by looking at Mio's eyes. He seems capable of a feline form of martial arts and is in love with Yani.

Yani

Pucca's pink cat, Yani is the most popular cat in Sooga village. She always gives the paw, being a snob cat. She is loved by Mio and the Cat clan who are Mio's riavls.

Policeman Bruce

Abyo's father, he usually chases after Abyo when he is being 'Antisocial' (or destructive). He finishes his sentences with the word 'over', or if he is the last one to speak at the end of an episode he says 'over and out'.

Chang

Chang is Ching's father. He is the master of Turtle Training Hall, he usually teaches Ching, Garu and Abyo martial arts. Chang loves to make fruit juices (that his pet turtle often swims in) for Ching and friends. His best friend is Policeman Bruce.

Smiley Men

Other

Ester Loo

Master Soo's younger brother. He got a birthday present that was a prank that Master Soo made.

Master Hiel Kikyu

A master martial artist who Garu is the number one fan of. He appears in "Autograph This!" where Pucca tries to get his autograph for Garu when Tobe steals Garu's ticket. Despite Hiel's supposed superhuman martial arts, he was constantally topped by Pucca. He is also a legendary Fire Wasp Ninja. His name is also a pun for "he'll kick you."

Turtle

An old man who resembles a turtle (even down to the green skin and shell). He makes fortunes for fortune cookies that always come true when read. He is also a legendary Fire Wasp Ninja. He appears in "Unfortunate Cookies" and "Choo-Choo Trouble,"

Gura

Gura is Garu's younger brother used as a decoy for a kiss from Pucca. He is also happy to help Garu.

Kua

A young female dare devil whom Uncle Dumpling, Ho and Linguini fall in love with. She takes them on a dangerous date until picking her true love. Before coming to her conclusion, Master Soo appears and she falls in love with him, becoming one his maidens. Her physical appearance and lust for adventure seems to be a reference to Lara Croft.

Master Soo's Maidens

Maidens that live with Master Soo. They are completely devoted to him and love him dearly.

Australian Man

A man from Australia that finds Garu and adopts him as his son. Pucca saves him from the man. May be loosely based on Steve Irwin.

They merge into a giant Fire Smiley Man and pucca dinks the entire lake to try and douse it, when that dosen't work she grabs the goh-wong noodle bowl off its roof and stomps the monster out under it, turning the it back into normal smiley men.

Tex Lugie and Sloppy Sue

A rich Texan couple. They begin buying everything in Sooga Village until creating their own restaurant that runs the Goh-wong restaurant out of business and induledges Sooga Village. Their restaurant is destroyed by Pucca and they transform their R.V. into a rampaging Transformer-like robot that is tricked into dancing off a cliff by Pucca playing a violin.

The Sumo Wrestlers

Three sumo wrestlers that Garu wrestle with. They are able to combine into one sumo wrestler and are able to change different sizes.

Trivia

  • The UK also has pencil cases/tins, stationary and notebooks/diaries.
  • Many of the episodes are play-on-words:
  • Many episodes take place in Alternate Reality versions of Soogaville, with alternate versions of the characters (Space stations, jungle, ETC.)
  • In the episode 'Tobe's Nighttime Troubles', Pucca contacts aliens using her odango atama hairstyle.
  • In the episode 'Datin' & Dumplings', a character who appears to be an obvious reference to Tomb Raider heroine Lara Croft visits the restaurant, and, encouraged by Pucca, ends up going on a date with the three chefs.

  • Pucca has been used as a mascot for the online shop Opane since 2000.
  • In the TV Series, Pucca and Garu are the only human characters who were never given the opportunity to speak, but instead gave them giggles, grunts, and other various sounds, much like their online Flash cartoons.
  • In a few episodes, Abyo temporarily dons the signature yellow with black stripes track suit that Bruce Lee wore in the Game of Death.
  • "Puccalove" mobile content subscription services and a suppoting online site were available in Japan from 2004 through 2006.
  • In the episode "And the Band Played Rong," it is mentioned by Ching that Pucca has a wonderful voice. In reply, Pucca just stared at Ching quietly. However, "Tokyo a Go-Go," Pucca is seen finishing a song in a karoke place, singing in an opera-type manner.
