Vegeta
Template:DB Character Vegeta (ベジータ, Bejīta) or Prince Vegeta is a fictional character, supervillain, anti-hero and later superhero in the anime and manga series Dragon Ball Z and appears in Dragon Ball GT, as well as Neko Majin Z as a goof by Akira Toriyama. He is the prince of the near-extinct Saiyan race, arch-rival to Son Goku, and a powerful warrior.
His name can be considered a pun on either vegetable or the condiment vegeta.
Appearance
Vegeta's build when he first appears in Dragon Ball Z is short and stocky, and he remains short for the course of the series, even though in the anime he becomes more slender and muscular as time goes on. He has black hair that stands firmly upwards, and he has a profound widow's peak. However, in the anime during his first appearance, his hair is clearly a dark auburn, but later changes to black and remains black for the rest of the series.
Vegeta's skin tone is a medium shade of tan, or more caramel in color. As a full-blooded Saiyan, Vegeta once had a monkey-like tail that was usually seen wrapped around his waist like a belt. After his first battle with Goku and his friends, it was cut off by Yajirobe.
Vegeta usually is seen wearing white gloves, white light-weight boots and a skin tight dark blue bodysuit. Vegeta also wears battle armor until the end of the Cell saga, which changes to simply the blue suit in the Buu saga. In Dragon Ball GT, Vegeta's attire becomes more Earth oriented, changing to leather.
Personality
As the royal prince of the almost extinct Saiyan race, Vegeta is seen to be arrogant, rude, and sadistic, making his pride and power the most important things to him. Even though his strong sadistic nature relaxes when he marries and has children, his overwhelming pride never ceases even as he settles down into family life. Because of his evil intentions before he joined the Z Fighters, Vegeta is often viewed as the outsider of the Z team, making him one of the most distinguishable characters in the series. Many early examples of his unintentional heroism were due to arrogance, his love of fighting, or his desire to prove himself better than Goku. In order to do so, Vegeta would fight enemies that were considered rivals to Goku as well as him. This soon develops into him fighting in order to protect his family and his home from enemies. By the end of Dragon Ball Z, he views Goku more as a close friend rather than a serious rival. This is most obvious in the last episode of Dragon Ball GT when he becomes incredibly angry when he believes Yi Xing Long has killed Goku.
Character history
Pre-Dragon Ball
Vegeta is seen in his youth in the Burdock movie special. Vegeta easily destroyed 5-6 Saibamen in this movie, showing his immense ability at a young age, being the son of the Saiyan king who was also named Vegeta. Even though Vegeta was royalty, he and his father were under the rule of the planetary overlord, Freeza. However, Freeza, out of fear of an impending uprising, kills King Vegeta and destroys Planet Vegeta, along with all Saiyans except for 4 (three additional Saiyans, Tullece, Paragus, and Broly, are added from the movies), Goku, Goku's older brother Raditz, Nappa and Vegeta himself. Freeza kept Vegeta, Raditz and Nappa as mercenary, usually to destroy planets and instill fear, much as he had used the Saiyan race. Meanwhile, unknown to Freeza, Goku had been sent to Earth to wipe out the humans and prepare it for sale. Because Vegeta is the son of King Vegeta, he prides himself as being the "Prince of all Saiyans".
Dragon Ball Z
Saiyan Saga
Vegeta is introduced to Dragon Ball Z as a reluctant and deceitful mercenary for Freeza. However, his true intentions for coming to Earth are to make a wish with the Dragon Balls for eternal life, in the hopes of eventually defeating Freeza and becoming the ultimate warriors. When Vegeta and Nappa arrive on Earth, they are confronted by the Z Fighters. Vegeta lets Nappa fight alone, Nappa has no trouble disposing of most of them. When Goku finally arrived and saves the remaining Z Fighters, he easily defeats Nappa. Vegeta, out of anger, kills Nappa for losing to such a low class Saiyan. Vegeta begins his battle with Goku.
At first, Vegeta easily overpowers Goku. However after a battle with Vegeta being overpowered by Goku's Kaioken x4, Vegeta transforms into a Oozaru, crushing Goku. But after his tail was cut off by Yajirobe's katana, hit by a Genki Dama and crushed by Gohan in his Oozaru form. A severely wounded Vegeta tried to reach his space pod. The other fighters are unable to move except for Kuririn. He wanted to kill Vegeta with Yajirobe's katana, but Goku pleaded with Kuririn to spare Vegeta. Barely escapes with his life, Vegeta, within his space pod, takes off towards one of the planets controlled by Freeza to recover from his injuries. With his extreme arrogance, he cannot understand how he could have been defeated by such weak enemies.
Freeza Saga
After recovering from the wounds he received from the battle on Earth, Vegeta finds out that Freeza left for Planet Namek in search of the Namekian Dragon Balls. Vegeta makes his way to Planet Namek, planning to make a wish with the Namekian Dragon Balls. When he arrives, Vegeta finds that Freeza has already been searching for the Dragon Balls. Vegeta kills Freeza's minions Kiwi, Dodoria, and Freeza's right hand soldier, Zarbon. He also confronts Gohan and Kuririn, who had also come for the Dragon Balls so that their dead friends could be revived. The Dragon Balls are soon stolen by Freeza's elite mercenaries, the Ginyu Force who fought Vegeta, Kuririn, and Gohan after they had teamed with the purpose of fighting them. Vegeta is able to kill Gurd but is then defeated by Recoome. During Gohan's fight with Recoome, Goku arrives to help after healing from his injuries from his fight with Vegeta. After Goku defeated Recoome, Vegeta comes to believe that Goku may have become the new Saiyan of Legend.
After Goku defeated Butta, Vegeta stomped on Butta's neck, then finished off the wounded Recoome with an energy blast thus killing them both. Goku, upset by Vegeta's actions, says that Recoome and Butta deserved the mercy that Vegeta received. During the battle with Captain Ginyu, Vegeta battles Jheese also killing him in the process. After the Ginyu Force is defeated, Goku was left badly injured, but Vegeta decided to help him recover, so he could help battle Freeza. Freeza showed up abruptly to stop Gohan and Kuririn from wishing on the Dragon Balls, something Vegeta was not aware of. Vegeta, Gohan, Kuririn, and the recently revived Piccolo begin a battle with Freeza, however Freeza was simply toying with the warriors. Freeza then decided to torture Vegeta to show him that he really wasn't the Super Saiyan that he had made himself to believe.
Freeza completely dominated Vegeta, but Goku arrived in time to save him. With tears in his eyes, he spent his last moments of life telling Goku about what really happened to Planet Vegeta, which Freeza was responsible for. In his last moment, Vegeta mocked Freeza, for he believed that Goku could beat the alien tyrant. Freeza finished him off with a single energy beam from his finger, killing the Saiyan prince. Vegeta was later revived by the Dragon Balls, and transported to Earth. He, later, left to train in hope of surpassing Goku who had reached Super Saiyan while fighting Freeza.
Cell Saga
After Freeza's defeat, Vegeta scours the galaxy in search of Goku. Unable to locate him, Vegeta returns to Earth. After an offer from Bulma for a place to stay, he lives with the Briefs family at Capsule Corp. Vegeta continues to train in hopes of defeating Goku upon his return. When sensing a huge ki heading towards Earth, Vegeta realizes that Goku had not killed Freeza. Freeza arrives on Earth with his father, King Cold, to exact revenge upon Goku, his family and friends. Suddenly a mysterious young Super Saiyan appears quickly disposes of Freeza and King Cold to Vegeta's disbelief. When Goku finally arrives on Earth, the young man tells him that he is from the future, and that two diabolical androids will arrive in three years and kill all the Z Fighters. After a quick display of their Super Saiyan abilities, Vegeta vows to become one himself. During the three years, Vegeta and Bulma have a child named Trunks and Vegeta becomes a Super Saiyan during this time period as well.
The Androids arrive three years later as predicted. When Goku failed to defeat Android 19 because of a heart illness, Vegeta, donning a new Saiyan outfit, defeats Android 19 revealing his Super Saiyan power to the other Z-Fighters. During Piccolo's fights the Android 20 (Dr. Gero), the young Super Saiyan reappears. Hearing Piccolo call the boy "Trunks", Vegeta realizes that the young man was his own son, from the future. It is also revealed that the androids the Z-Fighters confronted were not the ones that Trunks knew. Gero escaped to his hideout and released the androids Trunks was familiar with (#17, and #18), who in turn kill Gero and release Android 16. During his battle with the newly awakened Android 18, Vegeta is beaten severely. After being outclassed, Vegeta vows to transcend the Super Saiyan. Goku, recovered from his illness, persuades Vegeta to enters the Room of Spirit and Time at Kami's Lookout and trains with Trunks for a lapsed time of one year. During that time, the bio-warrior android named Cell had started his search for Androids 17 and 18, in a goal to reach "perfection". He was successful in absorbing Android 17.
Vegeta and Trunks emerge from the Room of Spirit and Time, to confront Semi-Perfect Cell. After revealing his Ascended Super Saiyan form, Vegeta dominates Cell. Cell, feeding off Vegeta's pride, persuades Vegeta to allow him to absorb Android 18 in order to become complete, thus making the fight more interesting. Vegeta foolishly allows this. Cell absorbs 18, and Vegeta finds himself utterly outclassed once again. Trunks comes to his father's aid and shows he has surpassed even his father's prided strength. It was revealed Trunks' power had limitations, sacrificing speed for power. Vegeta had seemingly understood this concept, whereas Trunks had not. After the battle which Cell wins, Cell decided to hold a tournament dubbed the Cell Games to fight the strongest warriors on Earth, mainly Son Goku. Vegeta, in preparation for the tournament, reenters the Room of Spirit and Time a second time; however, he was unable to advance his powers after another lapsed time of one year.
Vegeta is an observer during the beginning bouts of the Cell Games. Vegeta does not get the opportunity to fight in the actual tournament until Cell creates his Cell Juniors. Because of Gohan's foolish mistake in not destroying Cell, Goku sacrifice himself for the fate of Earth. After Goku's sacrifice and Cell's resurrection, Cell kills Trunks. Vegeta, out of rage of seeing his son die, goes into a berserk rage and attacks Cell, this being the first time Vegeta shows affection for another person. Cell defeats Vegeta but later Vegeta distracts Cell long enough for Super Saiyan 2 Gohan to push all his energy into his Kamehameha destroying Cell. Now with Goku's death, Vegeta felt that he would never have another chance to defeat Goku. With Cell defeated and Shenlong reviving the people killed by Cell, Trunks decides to return to his time. Vegeta, in his own way, acknowledges Trunks as a worthy Saiyan warrior before Trunks returns to his time.
Buu Saga
Seven years pass since the Cell Games, and the Tenka’ichi Budôkai is reinstated. Now that Goku is gone, Vegeta's main focus is to make his own son stronger than Goku's now two sons. Hearing from Goku during Gohan's visit to Capsule Corp that he will be visiting Earth for a strict 24 hour period to fight in the tournament, Vegeta sees this as the perfect opportunity for a rematch with Goku. During the tournament, the active Z-Fighters are alerted to the presence of a grand evil and head off to vanquish it, enraging Vegeta who is again denied his rematch. During their confrontation with Babidi and his Majin warriors, Vegeta's dark intentions are observed by Dabura, the strongest minion under Babidi's command who abandons his fight with Gohan to inform his master. Able to manipulate and enslave those with evil in their hearts, Babidi attempts to mystically convert Vegeta into a Majin warrior. Though he struggles, Vegeta is consumed and becomes Majin Vegeta. Desperate to fight Goku, they are returned, by Babidi's magic, to the tournament arena where Vegeta begins murdering spectators to force Goku into a no-holds barred battle. However, refusing to allow more innocents to fall, Goku requests Babidi to allow their battle to take place in a remote, abandoned area.
There, after being transported, Vegeta is ordered to kill the East Kaioshin by Babidi but Vegeta refuses to the astonishment of Babidi as it is something that should be impossible. Clinging to his pride after being enslaved, Vegeta states that his only goal is to finally defeat Goku and nothing else will be allowed to interrupt or postpone their battle. East Kaioshin and Gohan go into Babidi's ship to stop him. As Goku and Vegeta fight, they release enough energy to revive Buu, and Goku is distracted. Goku requests him and Vegeta postpone their battle to fight Buu. Vegeta accepts the truce only to knock Goku unconscious and setting off to deal with Majin Buu alone, wanting to repay Goku for sacrificing himself against Cell many years ago. Unfortunately Vegeta, despite possessing overwhelming power, cannot compete with Buu's near invulnerability and is bested, forcing him to commit suicide as a last resort, detonating every ounce of power and in the process sacrificing his life, even though he knew from Piccolo that he would go to hell.
Eventually, Vegeta is restored to life when the battle against Buu becomes increasingly desperate. Vegeta unwillingly forces himself to fuse with Goku to become Vegetto, easily out-classing Buu until Vegetto is willingly absorbed to free his friends trapped within the mystical monster. Within the bowels of Buu, Vegetto is separated into Goku and Vegeta. They engage in battles with the internal defenses of Buu before escaping and being transported to the planet of the Kais. There, Vegeta and Goku battle against Buu until Vegeta composes a plan, struggling to hold off Buu long enough for Goku to form and use the Genki Dama. During this time Vegeta asks Dende on New Namek to wish everyone on Earth back to life to give energy to the Genki Dama. Dende asks Porunga to wish everyone that was non-evil back to life and to his and Goku's surprise, Vegeta is restored back to life. Buu is defeated and Vegeta finally settles his rivalry with Goku, becoming a true good guy and Goku's friend in the process. Many years later, the heroes reunite at another Tenka’ichi Budôkai tournament where Vegeta prepares once again to face Goku in battle. Goku fights Uub, the reincarnation of Kid Buu, but leaves however to train the powerful new fighter, as Vegeta and the Z-fighters watch on.[1].
In the new kanzenban version of the final volume, Vegeta once again swears to himself that he will become stronger than Goku and fight him again.[2].
Dragon Ball GT
Baby Saga
In this saga, Baby, an artificially-created Tsufurujin came to Earth. These people were the race that used to live on the Saiyan's homeworld before being wiped out by the stronger race. He possessed people, including Gohan and Goten, to find Vegeta. Vegeta fought both Goten and Gohan, and beat them, but Baby entered Vegeta's body through multiple cuts and proceeded to control him completely. Vegeta continues to be possesed by Baby for most of the saga until Baby willingly leaves Vegeta's body when he is defeated by Super Saiyan 4 Goku.
Super 17 Saga
After Goku gets trapped in Hell and is forced to fight Freeza and Cell, Vegeta claims that he is the Earth's protector in the case of Goku's absence and is determined to win the battle against Super 17 (the fusion of Android 17 from the Cell Saga and a newer version of 17, a Machine Mutant created in Hell). He powers up to Super Saiyan 2 and uses his new attack, the Final Shine Attack, however this proves futile, as Super 17 simply absorbs the attack. But then Goku comes back and with some help from #18 he destroys him with his Super Dragon Fist attack.
Shadow Dragon Saga
As Goku continues to have trouble against the One Star Dragon, Yi Xing Long, Vegeta comes to his aid. Transforming into a Golden Oozaru, due to the Blutz Wave Generator (a device invented by Bulma), Vegeta proceeded to become a Super Saiyan 4 as he had full control over the Oozaru form. When even this form failed to stop the Shadow Dragon, Goku and Vegeta fused to become Super Saiyan 4 Gogeta. Gogeta overwhelmed Yi Xing Long in power almost bringing the heroes to victory, but the fusion time ran out before they could deliver the final blow. The two separate and are beaten until Goku uses a Genki Dama to take out the creature. Eventually, thanks to the people of the Earth and of the entire universe, Goku gains a big enough Genki Dama to destroy Yi Xing Long. Before leaving forever, Goku tells Vegeta that the lives of everyone are now in his hands, passing the role of protector of the Earth and anyone in need of help to Vegeta.
Forms and transformations
As a member of the Saiyan race, Vegeta possesses a large number of transformations that enhance his abilities to varying degrees and alter his physical appearance. These forms are listed in the order they were shown.
Normal
This is Vegeta's normal form (See Appearance). His appearance remains the same over the course of the entire series (his hair changes in GT), though his basic level of power greatly increases from training and injury as time progresses. This in turn boosts the power potential for all his transformations. When any transformation is cancelled due to unconsciousness, depletion of energy, death or self-reversion, Vegeta returns to this form.
Oozaru
This is Vegeta's least used transformation that occurs when he is exposed to rays of moon light, real or artificial while he possesses his tail. When these conditions are met Vegeta transforms into a giant ape, vastly increasing his size and strength. Vegeta is shown to have full control of himself in this form unlike most Saiyans who would randomly rampage about with no control of their actions. Saiyans are 10 times stronger than their normal form while in Oozaru form.
Super Saiyan
Vegeta first achieved this while training during the three year time period waiting for the arrival of the androids. However, Vegeta is first seen to have this ability in his battle with Android #19. This transformation results in Vegeta's physical limits being increased by a great amount, enhancing his speed, strength, reflexes and destructive potential. His hair turns gold and is forced upward, with sharper edges, whilst his irises turn green, his body becoming surrounded in a glowing, golden aura. Additionally, his muscle mass also increases slightly.
Super Saiyan 2nd Grade
By forcing his power as a Super Saiyan to the absolute limit, Vegeta was able to transform to an advanced form of Super Saiyan. In appearance, Vegeta resembles his Super Saiyan form but his hair has gotten longer and more defined. His muscle mass has also greatly increased, but not to a point that inhibits his speed. Even though this is never specifically stated, Trunks says later that Vegeta was possibly able to transform into a Super Saiyan 3rd Grade, but chose not to because he knew of the negative side effects of lost speed. Vegeta refers himself as "Super Vegeta" while in this form.
Majin Vegeta
Vegeta by the Buu saga had become for the most part good, but hidden desires and evil still lurked in his soul. Seeing this and using it to his advantage, the dark wizard Babidi used his magic to possess Vegeta and fully reveal the full extent of his power that had been suppressed for years by his good nature. Vegeta had become the purely evil Majin Vegeta, whom Babidi had also attempted to control, but Vegeta's overwhelming pride made that difficult for him. Vegeta now had full access to every depth of his previously sublimated power, increasing his strength tremendously. It is later discovered that Vegeta could have resisted Babidi's attempt to possess him, but chose not to after seeing the incredible effect on power that Babidi's possession had on the Human Spopovitch. Vegeta was desperate for a rematch with Goku, and with Goku's limited time back on Earth, and the knowledge that he could not beat Goku with his current state of power, Vegeta decided that becoming a Majin was the only alternative.
Majin Vegeta's appearance differs in subtle ways from his regular Super Saiyan form. The only visible differences are that the outlines of his eyes become much darker to highlight the black colouring, protruding veins on various areas of his body and the "M" symbol in the center of his forehead (the mark of the Majin) indicating his enslavement to Babidi. Vegeta has full access to Super Saiyan 2 in this state.
Super Saiyan 2
It is actually uncertain when Vegeta becomes Super Saiyan 2, but it is first revealed when Vegeta becomes Majin Vegeta. He later uses this form to fight Kid Buu while buying Goku time to prepare the Super Genki Dama. This transformation again increased Vegeta's physical limits, enhancing his abilities beyond the capabilities of his Super Saiyan 1 form. His appearance is similar to that of the Super Saiyan state but his hair strands are clearly and individually defined while his body sparks with bolts of electricity.
Baby Vegeta
Like his Majin state, this is a form outside of normal Saiyan transformations, thrust upon Vegeta when he was attacked and possessed by the parasite Baby, chosen as the strongest being on Earth. During his possession, his form gradually alters over time as his body is augmented to suit Baby's desires. Originally, Baby Vegeta appears to be in the Super Saiyan state permanently with his hair slowly turning gray and his eyes turning red, his eyebrows receding. His skin turned a grayish hue and he gained a black suit with golden shoulder pads.
Golden Oozaru
Vegeta first attained this form while not under control of his own body. The entity known as Baby had infested his body and taken control of Vegeta. Due to Baby-possessed Bulma's application of wave surges called "Blutz Waves" ("Bruits Waves" in the original version), Baby was transformed into a Golden Oozaru in order to compete with Super Saiyan 4 Goku. Baby Vegeta was returned to normal after his tail was severed.
Super Saiyan 4
Using artificial means to transform into a Golden Oozaru, Vegeta then forced himself to overcome the fierce primal rage of the form, and in doing so, ascended to Super Saiyan 4. The physique of the form differs drastically when compared to any of Vegeta's prior Super Saiyan forms. He appears in his normal state, but his body is coated in a crimson fur apart from his chest and hands. His irises in his eyes turn turquoise and he gains pupils; also his upper and lower eyelids turn red. Vegeta's tail also returns, crimson in color as well. Vegeta only used this form in Dragon Ball GT, utilizing it to help Goku against Yi Xing Long.
Fusions
Gogeta
Result of a successful Fusion Dance between Goku and Vegeta.
Vegetto
Vegetto is the result of Fusion between Goku and Vegeta using the Potara Earings.
Veku
Result of a failed Fusion Dance, Vegeta and Goku become a fat version of Gogeta.
Techniques and special abilities
Vegeta has a large library of attacks, mostly due to the fact that he uses a new attack in almost every fight. A list of all the techniques that Vegeta has used are listed below.
Atomic Blast
- A devastating special attack Majin Vegeta uses on Majin Buu. He extends his right arm towards his opponent. He then carefully targets which part of the enemy his wishes to fire the blast by extending out his index finger and middle, while carefully limiting the space of his thumb.
- When using this technique, Vegeta extends one arm and opens his palm, turning his hand up at a 90-degree angle (as if to signal "stop") and gathers his Ki. He then fires a sphere of Ki that is yellow in color and creates an enormous explosion upon contact. He first uses this attack in order to destroy Android 19 during the Cell saga.
- The power of flight. It literally means "lighter than air skill" or "Air Dance". Most warriors in the Dragon Ball universe can perform this.
Energy Rings
- Vegeta creates five energy rings which he then uses to pin his opponent by binding their limbs and neck. He used this ability in his fight with Goku during the Buu Saga. This attack does not appear in the manga.
- Translates to "Ultimate Final Skill", Majin Vegeta uses this attack against Majin Buu. He engulfs himself in fiery energy and charges his Ki and then releases a burst of energy in the form of a sphere that continuously expands until Vegeta is out of energy. It was also called Suicide in the video game "Dragon Ball Z: Legendary Super Warriors" and called Final Explosion in the Budokai and Budokai Tenkaichi series'. This technique is Vegeta's most powerful one, since it uses up every ounce of Vegeta's energy. As a result his body becomes completely lifeless, turning into stone and eventually crumbling to dust.
- An energy attack used by Vegeta. He performs it by extending his arms outwards from the sides of his body, then placing the base of his hands together directly forward and releasing a large and powerful gold Ki beam that consumes everything in its path. It requires some time to "power up". It was first used against Cell during the Cell Saga, and once more against Goku during the Buu Saga, when Vegeta was under the Majin enchantment.
Final Shine
- Seen only in Dragon Ball GT, this is a powerful and quickly charged beam of green energy that Vegeta launched at Super 17. Additionally, Vegeta uses this attack again against Yi Xing Long, but it has no effect. This time he shot it like a Final Flash.
- A beam similar to the Kamehameha. Vegeta charges the attack similarly to the Kamehameha, but Vegeta releases it with both hands faced open (while the Kamehameha requires the fingers to be curled). The result is a concentrated, fuchsia-colored energy beam from his hands and body. Vegeta uses this against Goku in their first fight during the Saiyan Saga. Translated as Garlic Gun or Galick Gun. In keeping with the Saiyan pun on vegetables, it is named after the vegetable "garlic" (note that "ga-rikku" is the Japanese way of saying garlic).
- A razor sharp disk of energy that can slice through nearly any opponent. It was used by Vegeta only once to cut off Gohan's tail after a transformation into an Oozaru durring the Saiyan saga. It is similar to the "true" Kienzan used by Kuririn, which is a flat disc of Ki energy with a rotating edge around its perimeter. This attack is called Destructo Disc in the English version of the series.
