Silencer (video game)
This article provides insufficient context for those unfamiliar with the subject. |
Silencer was released by Mind Control Software for online play using WON technology. It was a multiplayer only game that combined elements of sidescroller games with other Sci-Fi action games such as Crusader: No Remorse. In the game, there were multiple competing agencies that sent agents into the field to hack public computer terminals, with the goal of exposing the martian government's secrets. Agents in the same agency could work as a team, and agents could buy a variety of items and weapons to help their team excel or hinder an opponent.
In May 2001, the game was pulled from online play when Won.net went offline. There has been some effort to re-establish the game, with many veterans of the game community spearheading different projects (including a Python version, and C++ by [quercosone,Aady, twiztid,Rick]). Attempts included making a "mod" for another game that would build silencer-like features, starting out from scratch to code the entire game, and even attempting to persuade Mind Control software to give the source code out.
Due to lack of information and response from Mind Control Software, the re-establishing movement has seemed to die down for the last time. The source code, as of June 15th, 2007 has not been released, and the last time a member of Mind Control Software has publicly acknowledged the movement was on March 15th, 2007 to which the the Mind Control employee stated: "The process is moving slowly, but moving nevertheless. Unfortunetly[sic], I cannot give an accurate estimate at this time."
This was the last time a Mind Control Employee posted inside of the arsia-mons forums.
