Gaspar Roca, born in 19__ and deceased in 2007, founded and served as the first publisher and editor of El Vocero newspaper. Originally a crime-oriented tabloid, under his leadership the newspaper was transformed into a mainstream daily that enjoys the second-highest circulation islandwide, with an abridged mainland U.S. edition.

Roca held top executive positions in the Puerto Rico Industrial Development Compny (PRIDCO) before becoming a newsmedia entrepreneur.

While other media editorialized in favor of freedom-of-the press, Roca committed significant financial resources to bankroll several successful freedom-of-information lawsuits that have strengthened the people's right-to-know.
