"The Baby Show"

"The Baby Show" is the ninth episode in the situation comedy series 30 Rock. The episode first aired in the U.S. on January 4, 2007, attracting 5.89 million viewers;[1] it ranked third in its timeslot (behind a new episode of CSI and a Grey's Anatomy rerun),[2] and 76th in Nielsen's prime-time television rankings for the week.[1]

Overview

At a birthday for Jenna, and just as she serenades them with "Greatest Love of All," Cerie announces her recent engagement. The news prompts Liz to question her own marital and maternal status, but after she tells Jenna about having a baby, everyone wants to be the sperm donor. Later on that day at the makeup room Jenna's makeup designer gives Liz her baby daughter to watch...but a second later they show up in Liz's apartment (Liz compares this to a form of highway hypnosis). Having realizing this, she returns the baby but Pete covers. In the end she decides that she'll wait awhile before thinking about motherhood.

Meanwhile, a series of "mommy issues" causes Jack extreme stress as his mother keeps calling him, driving Jack to eat constantly. Jack's mother Colleeen wants to move in with him and he is unhappy about the prospect, as his mother was overbearing and harshly critical of him while she raised him.

As for Tracy, he is not impressed with Josh hanging around him and impersonating him with a high degree of accuracy. Tracy wants Liz to fix it, but to no avail as Josh uses phony phone calls to convince Tracy not to go to Jack. When Liz learns of Josh's pranks she tells him to turn it around by calling Jack so he won't intervene on Tracy's behalf. However Tracy and Jack later find out, resulting in Josh being forced into impersonating Jack on the phone to talk to Jack's mother and afterwards to impersonate Tracy when he calls Tracy's wife for an apology.

Trivia

  • This is the second episode (following the show's pilot) in which Dratch played cat wrangler Greta Johansen, who is revealed to be the owner of a ferret farm.
  • Greta is the first of Dratch's characters on the show to become recurring.
  • Jack gets mad at his assistant Jonathan for letting a 407 area code in to him. 407 is an area code in the Orlando metro area of Florida, where Jack's mother lives.
