Scope

This project covers all Interstate Highways in the United States. Note that the scope of some state highway WikiProjects include Interstates while others do not. If in doubt, check that state's WikiProject.

Goals

To standardize the format of the Interstate highway articles, and to generate some featured articles as well.

Naming conventions

Basic

 • Interstate x - main and auxiliary interstates that are not nationally duplicated.
 • Interstate x (state) - auxiliary interstates that have duplications and are single state. "Interstate x" becomes a disambiguation page.
 • Interstate x (state-state) - secondary interstates that have duplications and enter multiple states. Western/southernmost state is listed first. If the Interstate enters more than two states, then list all states in the name, beginning with the western/southernmost state. "Interstate x" becomes a disambiguation page.
 • Interstate x (west) - Interstates 76, 88, 86, and 84 are to be named with a disambiguating direction, since there are two of them. "Interstate x" becomes a disambiguation page.

Additional

For Interstates that traverse three or more states, state-specific Interstate pages can be made and are to be named "Interstate X in Y", where X is the Interstate number and Y is the state name.

Exceptions

Interstates in Alaska and Puerto Rico are listed under Interstate Highways in Alaska and Interstate Highways in Puerto Rico.

How you can help

Structure

All articles are to begin with a brief description of the route in general: mileage, etc.

Route description

Place the length table in this section, using lengths table to create the table header. Do not add a length table to articles describing intrastate interstates.

The description should be broken up by states using third level headings (===California===, for example). If this state is CA or WA, then put the state law sections that that WP wants here. Regardless, then describe the routing through this state. Intrastate Interstates do not need a third-level header.

Major cities

Place the list of cities in an infobox located at the top of the "Route description" section. Use the following coding to generate the box:

style="background: #ccf;"|<big>Major cities</big><br><small>Bolded cities are officially-designated control cities for signs</small>

*

The cities should be listed from south to north and west to east. Control cities should be bolded.

History

This section is optional, but recommended. Any history regarding the Interstate.

Future

This section is optional. Any concrete future plans (not speculation) regarding the Interstate.

Miscellanea

This section is optional, but is discouraged. Put all oddities, trivia, etc. here. If it's state-specific, include it on the state subpage. If possible, integrate items that would be placed in this section to other, more appropriate areas of the article. Use this section sparingly.

Major intersections

This section is optional. A bulleted list, but do not include if the exit list is present and complete.

Exit list

This section is strongly recommended. A detailed list of exits, optionally on their own subpages, that the Interstate has. Use existing tables as a guide (examples: Interstate 355, Interstate 390). Also see the exit list guide for a comprehensive guide on making exit lists.

Auxiliary routes

This section is optional. Place the 3di template in this section.

See also

Place links to related articles here.

References

This section is required. Put references here. This is important because to get featured article status, we need the references listed. Also, if you want, you should start citing your sources with the <references> format. See WP:CITE for more.

Links having to do with entire interstate go here. If it's state-specific, consider including it on the state subpage.

Categories

All primary interstate highways go here with a 2 digit sort code (08 for I-8, 85 for I-85, etc.)
All interstates that run through that state go here. For 2dis, use a 2 digit sort code as above. For 3dis, follow this example: 05-7 for I-705. 25-8 for I-825. Warning: some of these categories still use the lowercase H.
All 3dis go here with the 05-2 sort key (for example).
For Business Loops and Spurs.
Used to identify that other articles in addition to Interstate X (state detail pages for X, bridges, U.S. and Interstate Routes that runs along X) can be categorized in the same collection as Interstate X. Example: San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge and Interstate 80 can belong to Category:Interstate 80.

Infobox

The infobox for multi-state interstate routes is Infobox Interstate. The infobox for intrastate routes is . Go to Template:Infobox Interstate or Template:Infobox Interstate/Intrastate for primers on how to use these routeboxes.

Junctions and termini

To create these columns, simply add the following to the "junction" parameter:

I-8 at San Diego, CA<br>

You can also use the following code for infobox junctions:

After saving the page, edit the resulting code to account for any disambiguation or shield resizing.

To add more routes, simply copy and paste this code into the "junction" parameter as many times as needed.

Note:

 • Only major junctions go into the Interstate routebox. These would be other Interstates, and other notable highways, such as Turnpikes, and U.S. roads. For primary interstates with several junctions, then only 2di junctions are to be listed (excluding termini); otherwise, the routebox becomes unwieldy and too long. If any routebox has over 10 junctions, then some of the junctions need to be removed.
 • 3dis have more lenient rules because of their shorter nature. Junctions with state roads may be added, within reason. The 10-junction limit still applies regardless.

In summary:

 • For a three-digit Interstate, you can list all highway junctions within reason.
 • For a two-digit Interstate, only list junctions with other Interstates.
 • For a long interstate, only list 2di junctions.
 • For any interstate that is long enough to have 8 or more 2di junctions, such as I-80, I-90, I-40, I-10, I-75, and I-95, only list 2di junctions where the number ends in 5 or 0.

Shields

Shields for Interstate Highways have been created in the format I-X.svg, where X is the Interstate number. See Commons:Interstate shields for a gallery.

Browse numbered routes

For Interstates entering two or more states only.

Type the following code at the bottom of the article after Interstates.

start srbox
end box

In between the start and end templates, the state browse templates should be added. These templates exist in the form

where XX is the two-letter abbreviation of the state in lowercase (California is ca, New York is ny, etc.).

For the above parameters here's what you should fill in:

 • previous_type: previous route (by number) in that state. Interstate, US (for U.S. routes), and (2-letter state abbrev.).
 • previous_route: route number.
 • route: a link to the list page for that state's highway system.
 • next_type: the same as previous_type, but for the next route.
 • next_route: same as previous_route, but for the next route.

Project notice

Template:U.S. Interstate Highway WikiProject

Goes on talk page of each article. For assessment, see Wikipedia:WikiProject U.S. Roads/Assessment.

Goes on each primary highway (except 76, 84, 86, and 88) that has 3dis, and also goes on each secondary highway. (For Interstate 10 use etc.

Use an additional parameter for Interstates 76, 84, 86, and 88 (east and west for all). Example: Use for the I-84 in the east. If the box is empty (or incomplete or inaccurate), then create (edit) Template:3di 84 (east). The format for Template:3di xx (xxxx) is the same as the format for Template:3di xx.

Interstates

Goes on every article on a primary highway.
