Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Trials and Tribulations, released in Japan as Gyakuten Saiban 3 (逆転裁判3, lit. "Comeback Courtroom 3" or "Turnabout Trial 3") is an adventure/visual novel game developed by Capcom for the Nintendo DS video game console. It is the third game in the Gyakuten Saiban series (also known as the Ace Attorney/Phoenix Wright series), and precedes Gyakuten Saiban 4 for the Nintendo DS. The original version was released on the Game Boy Advance in Japan.
In the weeks leading up to the announcement, Capcom had launched an official contest to convince “Capcom to bring Ace Attorney 3 to America”. On the day the final winner of the contest was to be revealed, Capcom lifted the embargo on their upcoming titles revealed at their "Capcom's Gamers Day" event, which included Trials and Tribulations. However the title was already leaked when a member of the Court Records forums put up photos of a database readout from the GameCrazy chain of stores. The release date is documented as "9/25/07."[citation needed]
On April 13, 2007, Capcom officially announced the United States release of Trials and Tribulations in September, 2007[2], which confirms with the previous information from the GameCrazy inventory. A DS edition of Gyakuten Saiban 3 will be released in Japan on August 23, 2007, approximately one month before the English version's release; as with the previous Japanese DS releases, the game will feature both Japanese and English text.[3]
Gameplay
Gameplay is much like previous installments in the series. When in court, the player must find contradictions in witnesses' testimonies and point them out by browsing through evidence and profiles of related characters. Outside court, the game acts much like a point-and-click adventure. The player must then talk to people through a simple menu-based interface as well as find clues.

Characters
Returning characters
- Phoenix Wright / Ryuichi Naruhodo (成歩堂 龍一 Naruhodō Ryūichi) - Phoenix reprises his lead role for the third game in the series. He is also the defendant of the first case of the game.
- Mia Fey / Chihiro Ayasato (綾里 千尋 Ayasato Chihiro) - Phoenix's mentor and defense attorney in the flashback cases of the game (The first and fourth ones)
- Maya Fey / Mayoi Ayasato (綾里 真宵 Ayasato Mayoi) - Maya reprises her role as Phoenix's assistant.
- Miles Edgeworth / Reiji Mitsurugi (御剣 怜侍 Mitsurugi Reiji) - Phoenix's former prosecutor opponent from the first game. It was revealed that his first case as a prosecutor was also Mia Fey's first case as a defense attorney. He also takes Phoenix's role in the first half of the last trial of the game when Phoenix becomes incapacitated due to a fever.
- Franziska von Karma / Mei Karuma (狩魔冥 Karuma Mei) - Phoenix's former prosecutor opponent from the second game. She returns in order to face Phoenix for the last trial, but ends up facing Edgeworth instead.
- Pearl Fey / Harumi Ayasato (綾里春美 Ayasato Harumi) - Mia's and Maya's cousin and the daughter of Morgan Fey. Pearl (nicknamed 'Pearls' and 'Pearly' by Phoenix and Maya respectively) is a prodigy among spirit mediums in the Feys' home village of Kurain.
- Larry Butz / Masashi Yahari (矢張政志 Yahari Masashi) - Phoenix's best friend since grade school. In this game, he helps out in the investigations for the second and last trials, and he's the one responsible for getting Miles Edgeworth involved in the last trial.
- Winston Payne / Takefumi Auchi (亜内武文 Auchi Takefumi) - Seen in a flashback, Winston was at one time, unlike now, highly arrogant and cocky, while taking pride in his massive pompadour haircut. He loses this attitude (and his hair) after an upset victory by Mia Fey, which acts as the first case.
- The Judge - Saibanchō (裁判長 presiding judge) - Presiding in 3 of the 5 cases, the white-bearded judge generally maintains the proceedings and order in the court, but seems to be easily influenced through favors, flirting witnesses, or by those with strong wills. We find out the Judge has a brother in this game, who is also a Judge, the Judge's brother presides over cases 4 and the first part of 5.
New characters
- Godot[2] (Kaminogi Soryu)- A defense attorney who became Mia Fey's lover, and was thought to be dead (poisoned) six months before the first case of the game by Dahlia. However, as the game progress, it was revealed that he was only in a coma, though he was blinded, thus needed a special visor to see, and his hair had turned color from brown to white. Once he was released from hospital, Redd White had already killed Mia. Godot blamed Phoenix for not being able to protect her, which led him to become a prosecutor, in order to oppose Phoenix. Godot loves coffee and is known to drink up to 17 cups of coffee a day (all of them special blends). His name is derived from the play "Waiting for Godot" by Samuel Beckett (due to the fact that he is often very late). In the courtroom, Godot is sly and sarcastic, littering his speech with coffee allusions, but remains composed and unrelenting.
- Dahlia / Chinami Miyanagi - The murderer in the first and fourth case in the game and former nominal girlfriend of Phoenix Wright, Dahlia appears to be fragile and innocent, which she uses to charm everyone on to her side. She was brought up by her father, whom she hated, which led to the events of the fourth case in the game, where she plotted to steal her father's prized diamond along with Michiru Onamida. However, Dahlia's step-sister, Yūki Miyanagi, saw the couple as they were executing the plot. Dahlia threw herself into the Godō River along with the diamond. Thinking Onamida had pushed Dahlia into the river, Yūki had Onamida arrested for Dahlia's murder. Dahlia's body wasn't found, as she was found at the river bank located at Hazakurain, where she was nursed back to health by her twin sister Ayame.
During the trial of Yūki Miyanagi's murder (case 4 of the game), Dahlia claimed to be a witness under the pseudonym "Satoko Mukui". During the trial, when Mia Fey and Godot tried to implicate Dahlia as the murderer, she killed the defendant (indirectly), Michiru Onamida, who drank a vial of poison which Dahlia gave to him earlier and said was a "proof of their love".
As a result, the case collapsed and Dahlia was free. However, Godot, determined to put her behind bars, began to pursue her and managed to talk to her six months after the trial. However, Dahlia poisoned Godot's coffee, which appeared to have killed him. Dahlia was questioned for the crime but was released due to lack of evidence. The reason for the lack of evidence was because she had hid the evidence of her crime with the clueless Phoenix, whom she met in the court after the murder took place.
During the first case of the game, Dahlia appears as a witness and testifies in Phoenix's favor. However, this testimony is riddled with various contradictions to Phoenix's, and is soon discarded. Later, when Mia makes a connection between Phoenix's alleged murder of Kikuzō Nonda and Godot, she soon testifies on that case. Although the evidence of Dahlia's guilt is lost (Phoenix steals the incriminating pendant and eats it to protect her), Mia manages to prove that she had poisoned Phoenix's cold medicine in order to retrieve the pendant. Storyline

The story of Gyakuten Saiban 3 has cases which precede the first Gyakuten Saiban.
Memory Turnabout
The first case of the game takes place 5 years before the events of Gyakuten Saiban 3 (three years before Gyakuten Saiban), when Phoenix Wright is still a university student. The player character is switched to Mia Fey. Phoenix is accused of murdering a fellow college student by the name of Kikuzō Nonda. The cause of death is electrocution. Dahlia, Phoenix's girlfriend at the time, stole the Cold-Killer Z medicine that Phoenix was taking for his cold. Using poison stolen from the medical lab the night before the incident, she poisoned the medicine in hopes that Phoenix would take it and die, so that she could get the evidence for a case that happened 6 months ago and trash it. She was about to give it to him until she saw Kikuzō warning to Phoenix about the fate that lay ahead. Phoenix, not believing him, struck Kikuzō, who hit the ground on top of his umbrella, breaking it. Phoenix panicked and ran away. At the same time, the shock from the altercation caused a nearby weakened high-voltage wire to snap. Kikuzō got up and Dahlia, seeing the wire dangling, killed him to keep him quiet. A couple of minutes later, Phoenix came back to find Kikuzō dead. When he saw the medical students coming out of the lab to investigate the cause of the power outage, he fled and was thus accused for Kikuzō's murder.
Upon Mia winning a not guilty verdict, Mia challenges Payne's "unwavering trust" in Dahlia in such a way as to break his confidence and cause his hair to fall out.
