George Bentham's taxonomic arrangement of Dryandra was first published in Volume V of Flora Australiensis.

George Bentham's taxonomic arrangement of Dryandra (now B. ser. Dryandra) was published in 1870, in Volume 5 of Bentham's Flora Australiensis.[1] A substantial improvement on the previous arrangement, it would stand for over a century. It was eventually replaced by the 1996 arrangement of Alex George.[2]

Background

B. ser. Dryandra is a taxonomic series of 94 species within the plant genus Banksia. Until 2007 it was treated as a separate genus, under the name Dryandra. Dryandra was first published in 1810 by Robert Brown. Initially 13 species were recognised, but many new species were discovered over the next sixty years, and by the time Bentham published Flora Australiensis 47 species and two varieties were recognised.
