Killzone 2 is the second installment in the Killzone franchise that began on the PlayStation 2.A Killzone game was released for the Playstation Portable but is more of a side story than a full fledged sequel. It is being developed for PlayStation 3 by Guerrilla Games and published by Sony Computer Entertainment. It was announced at the 2005 Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles, California, during Sony's Pre-E3 Press Conference. Killzone 2 will be shown at this Julys E3 video game expo.

Current Development

There are more than 120 developers in the Netherlands working on the game at the moment. The new Killzone PS3 will be fully translated in 20 different languages. It is believed that the budget currently surpasses £20 million (Unknown country code for year 2021: GBP million), which is comparable to a small-budget Hollywood picture and is the most expensive multimedia project in Holland's history, though this has yet to be confirmed. It will have downloadable content like other contemporary games, possibly in the form of episodic content.

A trailer was shown behind closed doors at the GDC 2007. It showed a variety of battles ranging on foot and on vehicles, plus destructible environments.[1]

Recently GameStop sent out a SKU and release date for "Killzone" for the Playstation 3 to all of its stores. The computer system currently shows February 1st of 2008 as the ship date for the game.

Name Confusion

Although the current working title of the game is Killzone (Playstation 3), many have referred to the game as Killzone 2, due to the fact that Killzone: Liberation for the PSP was considered as a spin-off title. However the developers revealed that Killzone 2 was actually Killzone: Liberation; therefore many have speculated that the actual title to the game will be Killzone 3 instead. In spite of this, a recent announcement on the official Killzone website referred to the game as Killzone 2. [1]

Graphical Expectations

Critics in the media argued that the trailer shown at the E3 2005 trade show did not show actual gameplay footage, as its high level of visual detail has been argued to be impossible to render in real-time even with the PlayStation 3's processing power. SCEA's Vice President, Jack Tretton, was quoted as saying that the Killzone footage, that is believed to be pre-rendered,"is definitely real" and "is real gameplay", but it was later claimed that Tretton was referring to Resistance: Fall of Man , not Killzone. Sony's Phil Harrison later stated the video was done "to spec" during an interview with the G4 Network. [citation needed]Phil Harrison recently stated in an interview: "With Killzone, the expectation internally and externally is very high - and I won't show it until it's going to exceed people's expectations. It will be next year before we show it again, but it's coming along very well. The teams are working very hard, they know exactly what they have to do and there's no doubt they will achieve it, but there's nothing to be served by something that doesn't satisfy my goals for the project. I can tell you, though, that some elements already exceed the trailer."

Recently Michal Valient of Guerrilla Games announced their intentions to explain the details of their Killzone 2 Engine at a Developers Conference in July. In this interview he explained that Killzone 2 uses a Deferred Rendering engine that integrates MSAA (Multisample Anti Aliasing). Cell will also parallel process geometry, and indirect lighting among other things.

Deferred rendering in Killzone 2 Michal Valient, Guerrilla-Games

Next generation gaming brought high resolutions, very complex environments and large textures to our living rooms. With virtually every asset being inflated, it’s hard to use traditional forward rendering and hope for rich, dynamic environments with extensive dynamic lighting. Deferred rendering, on the other hand, has been traditionally described as a nice technique for rendering of scenes with many dynamic lights, that unfortunately suffers from fill-rate problems and lack of anti-aliasing and very few games that use it were published.

In this talk, we will discuss our approach to face this challenge and how we designed a deferred rendering engine that uses multi-sampled anti-aliasing (MSAA). We will give in-depth description of each individual stage of our real-time rendering pipeline and the main ingredients of our lighting, post-processing and data management. We’ll show how we utilize PS3’s SPUs for fast rendering of a large set of primitives, parallel processing of geometry and computation of indirect lighting. We will also describe our optimizations of the lighting and our parallel split (cascaded) shadow map algorithm for faster and stable MSAA output.

Take Away The session will provide detailed overview and optimizations of modern rendering engine and parallel processing. Many of the topics are applicable for various gaming platforms.

Killzone will be shown at this upcoming E3 show in July after having a teaser shown at the earlier Game Developer's Conference. It is rumored to being slated for launch in September, but its official release date will most likely be announced after it is shown at E3.

Info

Information regarding Killzone came under the wraps for about two years. There was no news on Killzone after the E3 trailer until November 2006, when supposed news came that Killzone was becoming Netherland's most expensive media project with a budget of about $21 million and that 120 developers were working on it.[2]

After the behind the scenes teaser shown at GDC 2007 Sony announced that Killzone will be at E3 2007.

As of now, Killzone is slated to appear in E3 2007.
