The University of Lucknow is an university in the city of Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, India.


History

The University of Lucknow grew out of the Canning College. As a result of the recommendation of the Sadler Commission, the idea of establishing a residential and teaching University at Lucknow gained considerable support and found immediate favour with those who believed that the historic city of Lucknow should have a University of its own to promote its distinctive culture and learning and provide highest instruction in all branches of modern knowledge.

The Hon'ble Raja Sir Muhammad Ali Mohammad Khan of Mahmudabad made a stong plea in the Pioneer for the creation of a separate University at Lucknow which was reinforced by all the Taluqdars of Awadh.Sir Harcourt Butler , the then Lt. Governor of United Provinces also gave active support to the idea.

The Lucknow University Act No VI of 1920 received the assent of the Lieutenant Governor on November 1, and of the Governor General on November 25, 1920.


Sir Harcourt Butler laid the foundation stone of the University on March 19, 1921.

On July 17, 1921 teaching classes commenced.

Luckno University began its journey with the Canning College, the King Georges' Medical College and the Isabella Thoburn College.


The expansion of the University began ith geneous support from the Taluqdars and the Goverment and ithin a quarter of a century the University had established itself as a respected seat of learning in the country.
