Woophy online Photo sharing community on World map

File:Woophy.JPG

Overview

woophy is an online photo sharing community based on a world map. Woophy stands for World of Photography. Currently the site has 20,000 members and contains 300,000 photos from 25,000 cities and villages in the world.

History

Founded in 1998 by Joris van Hoytema, Hoyte van Hoytema and Marcel Geenevasen as a result of idealism, fun and hobby. A couple of weeks after the launch the site was picked up in Hungary and after that it grew fast in the rest of the world. The core of the website is a world map on which members can post their pictures, visitors can zoom in on a particular place and view photos from a specific location. Unlike its technically more advanced counterparts fotolog flickr and panoramio, woophy aims for speed, intuitive navigation and lots of pictures visible at the same time. This makes it possible to travel the world in pictures within a few seconds.

Merits

It is a fast site which contains pictures from a lot of (semi) professional photographers. this gives a realistic view on the world without snapshots of friends etc. It is fast because they use a simple interface and an intelligent database algorithm which makes the map with thousands of pictures still load quickly. It’s possible to zoom and click faster than on sites like Flickr and Panoramio or even Google Maps. It also has a rating system, so a good photo can be rewarded and floats to the surface.

Criticisme

Because of the less precise map it is sometimes difficult to find pictures from a building or object. For example, if you look for a church on a specific place in a city, you have to use the search engine to find the right photo. The site is fast when you surf on broadband, it becomes slow if you have a less fast connection. It takes some time to load the dots which implicate the pictures. This is a problem for people living in a less developed country. At last an other small problem, the navigation is logical but it will need some seconds to understand it.
