List of minor Resident Evil characters

This is a list of minor characters appearing in the core Resident Evil series. Characters are arranged by the game they appeared in.

Resident Evil

Jessica Trevor

The wife of George Trevor and mother of Lisa Trevor. Jessica and Lisa were abducted by Lord Ozwell E. Spencer, co-founder of the Umbrella Corporation, and brought to the Arklay Research Facility due to the fact that both were aware of George's involvement with Spencer and his newly created mansion in the Arklay Mountains. Jessica became a victim of viral testing at the hands of Spencer and the Arklay research team, who infected her with a "Type-A" variation of the Progenitor Virus. She wrote a final emotional note to her daughter, fearing the worst and plotting to escape the mansion with Lisa when they were next reunited. However, Jessica succumbed to the Progenitor Virus before her plan could be carried out. Note: The grand piano, located within Spencer Mansion's lounge, can be used to release the lock to the adjacent hidden room by playing Ludwig van Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata". George chose this specific piece due to the fact that it was Jessica's favorite song.

John

John previously worked for Umbrella's Chicago branch before being assigned the position of chief researcher at the Arklay Research Facility following William Birkin's departure. A vocal critic of the cruel experiments conducted by the company, he was suspected of leaking information by his superiors. John was romantically involved with Ada Wong, who had infiltrated the lab as a researcher, unaware of her true intentions as a spy for one of Umbrella's competitors known only as 'The Organization'. John was infected with the T-Virus during the viral outbreak at the mansion and managed to leave a letter instructing Ada to escape and expose Umbrella's research to the media. The S.T.A.R.S. Alpha Team utilized these clues to assist them in escaping the facility. His surname was only ever revealed in two uncanonical sources: in S.D. Perry's novel The Umbrella Conspiracy, his full name is John Howe; according to the Wildstorm / DC Comics story Who Are These Guys? his full name is John Fay. This comic also delves into John's backstory, indicating that he joined Umbrella to conduct research without worrying about grant money running out, and that he hated making speeches and shaking hands in an effort to obtain funding. In the comic, John becomes a zombie while he is writing his final letter to Ada and upon being found by Jill Valentine begs to be killed. Jill complies, shooting John in the head.

The keeper

The keeper is an unnamed character in the original Resident Evil whose diary can be found in a room on the first floor of the mansion. His name is never mentioned in the actual text, although the name "Peter" is readable on the diary's cover in the PlayStation version of the game (the diary's cover was changed in the GameCube version, however). The diary describes the keeper's slow transformation from a regular human being into a zombie during a period of eleven days, in which he eventually kills his friend Scott as a result of the mutation. The final entry simply reads, "4. Itchy. Tasty."

Martin Crackhorn

A researcher in the Arklay laboratory, Martin Crackhorn was infected with the T-Virus after the outbreak. He wrote a death note for his lover, a woman named Alma, whick can be found in one of the offices. The note tells the player about how the virus makes even the simplest of tasks complicated, and how it weakens the brain capacity. After writing the note with a goodbye to his love, it is implied that Martin ended his life, by his own hand or not.

Resident Evil 2

Eliza Warren

The deceased daughter of Raccoon City's mayor. In the game, Eliza is revealed as her first name, with her last name being inferred in Resident Evil 3. She is found dead over the desk of Chief Irons when Claire enters his office. After Chief leaves his office, Claire can obtain the Chief's diary, which reveals the Chief's desires to hunt down the girl and use her body as a stuffed trophy. In the novelisation by S.D. Perry, she is given the name Beverly Harris, with Devlin Harris being the Mayor in S.D. Perry's continuity rather than Michael Warren.

(It should be noticed that her name is similar to that of the ultimately unused femail protagonist Elza Walker.)

Resident Evil 3: Nemesis

Michael Warren

The Mayor of Raccoon City is first mentioned in Resident Evil 3. He is never seen in the series, although a statue sculpted to his likeness can be found in Raccoon's City Hall. According to the "City Guide" and "Mechanic's Memo" found in the game, he came to Raccoon City as an electric engineer in 1963 and made several contributions to the city's electric systems, including the cable car built in 1968, and was first elected Mayor in 1988. He accepted several "donations" from the Umbrella Corporation and because of this, he turned a blind eye to the company's corruption. Although nothing is mentioned of his ultimate fate in the game, according to the writers he was the first person to evacuate Raccoon City during the outbreak. In the novelization of Resident Evil 2, it is said that he was eaten by zombies.

Resident Evil Code: Veronica

Sir Edward Ashford

Ashford was one of the founders of the Progenitor Virus and the Umbrella Corporation. Ashford was a consummate scientific mind, possessing none of the overzealous ambitions for power and wealth that his co-founder, Ozwell E. Spencer, was so driven to achieve. Edward's only interest was the study and research of the Progenitor Virus, intending to utilise its restorative effects to create medical and scientific achievements that were previously impossible for the medical community. However, Ashford died in 1968 , possibly sparing him the wrath of the treacherous Spencer, who had his remaining co-founder, James Marcus, assassinated to bolster his position within the Umbrella Corporation. Edward Ashford's desire to see Umbrella develop new ways to benefit humanity would never come to pass. The Progenitor Virus would eventually lead to the horrors of the T-Virus, and Ashford's own grandchildren, Alfred and Alexia, would visit their own terrors upon humanity.

Alexander Ashford

By the time Alexander Ashford had become the sixth patriarch of the Ashford Family, its reputation had become tarnished. Determined to restore his family honor, Alexander discovered a method of deliberately altering intelligence through genetic research. To test his discoveries, Alexander genetically cloned a human egg using the cells of his ancestor, Veronica, and placed it into a surrogate mother. To Alexander's surprise, twins were born from the egg: one male, the other female. The boy was named Alfred and the girl, Alexia, who Alexander considered to be the literal reincarnation of Veronica. However, later in their lives, the twins discovered the facts regarding their unnatural birth, which prompted Alexia to test her newly created viral specimen, the T-Veronica Virus, on Alexander. As a result, Alexander became a homicidal monster, unresponsive to communication and incapable of intelligent discourse, his body producing toxic poisons and growing mandibles as unforseen side effects. The twins had their father imprisoned beneath the Umbrella Corporation's Antarctic research facility, where no negative influences could possibly discover their horrible secret. Alexander was eventually nicknamed Nosferatu by the facility personnel and became a constant source of fear for those assigned to the facility. Alexander Ashford eventually found peace when Claire Redfield put him out of his misery (ironically enough, using a rifle that had belonged to his son, Alfred).

Resident Evil 4

Mike

Mike and Leon S. Kennedy celebrate a short lived victory over a swarm of Ganados

Mike is a helicopter pilot who is deployed to assist and extract Leon during his mission. He first appears in Chapter 5-4 of Resident Evil 4, and helps the player defeat a swarm of ganados. Equipped with a heavily armed UH-1 Iroquois, Mike is able to make quick waste of most opponents during his brief cameo. He is killed when one of Osmund Saddler’s minions destroys his helicopter with an RPG.

Leon's police escort

Two policemen make appearances during the game’s introductory cinematic. They are portrayed as two careless and unenthusiastic individuals, who do not understand the severity of Leon’s mission. Both men are captured shortly after the game begins, and are killed by a group of ganados. The player can witness the fate of the men at different parts of the game. While one is burned at a stake in the village, the other is fed to the del Lago in the lake.

The merchant

The Merchant opens his trench coat to reveal a plethora of arms and ammunition.

The merchant is a recurring character, who assists Leon in Resident Evil 4. He sells the player several weapons and health items that greatly benefit one’s success and progress during the course of the game. Additionally, he can upgrade a player’s armory, increasing the ammunition capacity, firepower, or rate of fire of a specific weapon. He also operates numerous shooting galleries in various parts of the game, which allow the player to collect money or win prizes.

The merchant’s true identity and origin are never revealed to the player. His secretive behavior and suspicious apparel have caused much speculation among fans of the game. The merchant’s appearance in enemy infested territory has also drawn question about his relationship with Los Illuminados and Las Plagas. He has also developed a firm fan base since Resident Evil 4 debut. VG Cats and Penny-Arcade two notable web comics, included a parody of the merchant in their comic series, while Mega64 featured a real life character, who pretended to be the merchant in a public venue.
