Villains in Sonic the Hedgehog
In the fictional universes of the Sonic the Hedgehog series of video games, there are a significant number of villains present. Aside from some of the more prominent ones, there are several who have had only minor roles in the storyline.
For villains appearing exclusively in the Archie-published Sonic the Hedgehog comics, see Minor villains in Sonic the Hedgehog (comic series).
Babylon Guardian
The Babylon Guardian (called Angelus the Gatekeeper in Japan) is a fictional character from Sonic Riders. He is a genie in a bottle, and resembles a large purple hawk who guards the treasure of Babylon. He is also referred to as "the guardian God of Babylon" when choosing his stage, called simply "Babylon Guardian". The treasure he was protecting was revealed to be a 'magic carpet' which was actually a prototype Extreme Gear created by the ancient Babylonians. He regards those who seek treasure as greedy, and he is hidden behind a large door in Babylon Garden (the Hanging Gardens of Babylon in Japan). He is the final and only 'boss' of Sonic Riders. He is defeated by Sonic at the end of the Babylon Story.
Battle Kukku Army
The Battle Kukku Army are an army of birds that invade Cocoa Island (in the English language versions, the Army is renamed the "Battle Bird Armada" and Cocoa Island is "Tails Island") in Tails Adventure. They invade the island to snag the Chaos Emeralds which are hidden on the island. Tails battles the army and after he defeats their leader, the birds surrender. The Battle Kukku Army consists of uniformed birds, somewhat intelligent robot drones and advanced machinery. The Battle Kukku Army lives on a huge flying fortress that posed as an island throughout most of Tails Adventure.
Notable members of the Battle Kukku Army include:
- Grand Battle Kukku 15th, the dictator-like leader of the army. He is larger than most Kukkus, and is the final boss of the game battled in his flying fortress. He fights by throwing bombs all around him and throwing Tails himself if the fox gets too close.
- Battle Kukku 16th, aka Speedy, the son of Grand Battle Kukku 15th. Speedy is a quick green Kukku who, despite his natural and fast aerial skills, sometimes wears armor equipped with an energy gun and a jet engine that lets him take even faster flight. He appears as a boss twice throughout the game, first on Pori Pori Mountain and then in the flying fortress just before the player faces his father.
- Dr. Fukurokov, the army's main scientist. He is the first boss of the flying fortress, but does not actually fight, as he instead lets his defensive machinery take care of Tails. His tendency to overlook little details is his greatest weakness.
Biolizard
Biolizard, the Prototype of Ultimate Life, is a creature which appears in Sonic Adventure 2 as the second to last boss, and final boss, and in episode 38 of Sonic X under the same role. It is also seen briefly in a flashback in Shadow the Hedgehog. The Biolizard appears as a giant and alien looking lizard with a life support system on its back with tubes running down its neck to its head. According to Sonic X, the Biolizard is 85 meters long, 30 meters wide, 19.5 meters tall, and weighs 87.5 tons.[1] The massive creature can either attack by trying to bite its enemies (despite not having any teeth), and attempting to hit them with its tail. Biolizard also has the power to spit large black energy orbs from its mouth and create smaller, but extremely numerous pink egg-like orbs shoot at a target.
The Biolizard was an earlier version of "Project Shadow", a government project run by Professor Gerald Robotnik that was intended to create an "Ultimate Lifeform" as a first step towards humanity discovering the secret of immortality. Due to the experiments, it later needed a life support system. While the Biolizard was successful in the way that it was could regenerate and restore itself, and could self-reproduce, it was also unruly and dangerous.[2] It was closed down when Gerald, with the aid of the alien Black Doom, produced a more advanced being: Shadow the Hedgehog. When GUN came to Space Colony ARK in order to put a stop to Gerald Robotniks plans, they found the Biolizard and shut it down. It didn't go without a fight, however, and it destroyed almost the entire group of GUN soldiers.
The Biolizard remained encapsulated aboard the ARK until Doctor Eggman placed the seven Chaos Emeralds into the Eclipse Cannon, initiating a hidden program by Gerald that would use the Emeralds to power the ARK into a doomsday causing collision with the planet below. Part of the plan had the Biolizard released to defend the Armageddon program from tampering, by the combined forces of Eggman, Sonic the Hedgehog and friends. But Amy Rose had convinced Shadow to help save the Earth, and he engaged and defeated the giant reptile in battle by damaging its Life Support System. Not giving up, the Biolizard then used Chaos Control to teleport outside and fuse with the space station itself, becoming the Finalhazard, the final boss of the game. As Finalhazard it attacks with the pink orbs and firing out pinkish energy beams from its damaged Life Support System. It was, however, weakened by the loss of its Life Support System and was destroyed by the combined power of Sonic and Shadow in super form, who then used Chaos Control to place the ARK back into orbit.
Black Arms
The Black Arms are an evil, almost demonic alien race led by Black Doom. They appear in the game Shadow the Hedgehog, where they invaded Earth in search of the seven Chaos Emeralds, and are battled by the game's main character Shadow the Hedgehog, along with other characters. They dwell on a massive comet, simply known as the Black Comet, which passes by Earth every fifty years. The Black Comet itself seems to act as if it were alive or at least techno-organic in nature, as its interior seems to be partially composed of organic matter, complete with deadly bodily fluid looking liquids, protruding tentacles, throat like caverns, and strange pulsating growths. The Black Arms come in several shapes but nearly all are characterized by jet black and crimson skin. The Black Arms start out life as a small, weak larva stage known as Death Leeches, which are in fact Black Doom's offspring. There are the standard troopers known as "Black Warriors", that act as the main footsoldiers. Many other variations also exist.
In Shadow the Hedgehog they are out to collect the Chaos Emeralds so that they can use Chaos Control to teleport their Black Comet to the Earth's surface, where it digs into the planet and releases a toxic gas that paralyzes all life without Black Arms DNA. After Black Doom is defeated, Shadow uses Chaos Control to send the Black Comet into space again, where he blasts it with the Eclipse Cannon on the Space Colony ARK, destroying it along with the Black Arms residing inside it.
In the Sonic the Hedgehog comics, the Black Arms also appear locked in war with another alien race known as the Xorda. For the time being, this war keeps both of them away from Sonic's home planet of Mobius.
Black Doom
Black Doom is the main antagonist from the game Shadow the Hedgehog. Black Doom is the archenemy of Shadow the Hedgehog, similar to what Doctor Eggman is to Sonic the Hedgehog. Black Doom is the leader and commander of the aliens Black Arms. Depending on which path the player choose (Hero or Dark), Black Doom will either be an ally or a foe of Shadow the Hedgehog. He has various telekinetic powers, the ability to use Chaos Control, and a third eye, simply known as "Doom's Eye", that is a separate being from himself, and can speak and project a hologram of Black Doom. He has a Dark Lord persona, his worn robe and jewelry give him the appearance of a priest and his motivation for conquering the world seems almost religious in nature. Black Doom is more malevolent and powerful than the other Sonic villains. Black Doom is voiced by Sean Schemmel in the English-speaking version of Shadow the Hedgehog and Ryūzaburō Ōtomo in the Japanese version.
Black Doom intended to invade the Earth for over two thousand years. The bird-shaped ruins in Glyphic Canyon and Sky Troops are revealed to be flying temples transported to Earth by Black Doom over two thousand years ago to be used as weapons. Fifty years prior to the game, Gerald Robotnik contacted the Black Comet and formed an alliance with Black Doom. The professor used the DNA in Black Doom's blood to create the Ultimate Life Form, Shadow the Hedgehog (technically making Black Doom Shadow's father), in order to expand Gerald's research and help Black Doom retrieve the Chaos Emeralds so he could teleport the Black Comet to Earth and conquer the planet. When Gerald learned of Black Doom's intentions he had the Eclipse Cannon built to destroy the Black Comet. At the beginning of the game Black Doom appears before Shadow as a hologram and commands him to find the Chaos Emeralds. Throughout the game Black Doom uses Shadow to fulfill his goals, and constantly tries to convince him to join the Black Arms and renounce his alliance with humans. He tries to win Shadow over by trying to manipulate Shadow into believing that no good can come from the continued existence of humanity. In the true ending, Shadow retrieves the Chaos Emeralds and Black Doom takes them, and reveals that he needed them to amplify his Chaos Control to transport the Black Comet to Earth. In the end, he transforms into a much more monstrous and powerful form: Devil Doom. Also using the Emeralds, Shadow transforms into Super Shadow, and he is able to defeat Devil Doom, sending him tumbling down toward the city below.
Eggman Nega
Eggman Nega is one of the main villains in Sonic Rush. He is introduced as Doctor Eggman's descendant from the future, and the primary nemesis of Blaze the Cat, another character from the future. He is more cruel and calculating than the Eggman from Sonic's time zone, and has sent Blaze's world into ruin, which is why she sets out for the Sol Emeralds. He is eerily polite for such a cold and calculating person. His downside, however, is that he can sometimes lose track of important details while making unnecessary speeches (such as failing to realize when Super Sonic is about to destroy his creation, whereas Eggman is already in a state of panic). His design appears reminiscent to the older Eggman from the Genesis Sonic games, albeit with the colors reversed.
While Eggman himself is first thought to be the primary antagonist in Sonic Rivals, the player soon finds out that Eggman Nega has captured Eggman and is disguising himself as him. Sonic Rivals also reveals that Eggman Nega is from around 200 years in the future and that he is Eggman's descendent. Using a special camera, he turns several objects and characters into cards, with the objective of turning the world into a card that he will be able to control. During the somewhat ambiguous ending of the game, Nega is captured inside a card of his own by Silver, yet it was never revealed how he returned to the past.
EggRobo
EggRobo is an egg-shaped humanoid robot resembling Dr. Eggman. They first appeared as enemies in the game Sonic & Knuckles. In Sonic's storyline in that game, many copies appeared as standard Badnik grunt enemies in the Sky Sanctuary Zone, after being seen launched from the Death Egg.
They are rather more prominent in Knuckles's storyline, however, as one EggRobo in particular attacks Knuckles in the beginning of the game, and then replaces Robotnik in cutscenes and as the end-of-zone boss in every level up until the Hidden Palace Zone, with the exception of Flying Battery Zone, which is Robotnik due to EggRobo not having sprites to mirror Robotnik's angle at the time. This EggRobo appears to have greater intelligence than the other ones, and can pilot machines like Robotnik. There is also no animal inside this one. This EggRobo is destroyed by Mecha Sonic in the Sky Sanctuary Zone (the final level in Knuckles' storyline). The EggRobo restrains Knuckles, allowing Mecha Sonic to charge at him, but Knuckles breaks free and Mecha Sonic destroys the EggRobo instead. It is unknown if Mecha Sonic destroyed it accidentally or if it were its intention all along.
EggRobo has appeared as an unlockable playable character in Sonic R, Sonic Adventure 2 and it's Gamecube port, Sonic Adventure 2 Battle.
Erazor Djinn
Erazor Djinn is a genie who serves as the primary antagonist in Sonic and the Secret Rings. His name is a pun on the words "Eraser" and "Razor" because he is "erasing" the pages of the book and he uses a razor-like weapon.[citation needed] He is voiced by Masashi Ebara in Japanese and Peter Cormican in English. Erazor is the Genie of the Lamp from the tale of Aladdin and the Magic Lamp. In his story, he was punished for misdeeds, and was to remain in his lamp until he had granted the wishes of one thousand people. When he had fulfilled his sentence and was finally freed, he had a renewed hatred of the creator of the stories, and began to take over the Arabian Nights, twisting the words that supported the stories into spirits that followed his command. He attempts to absorb the pages of the book, so he can control the entire world of Arabian Nights, as well as make his way into Sonic's world. He curses Sonic by embedding a flaming arrow in his chest. The curse made it that when the the flame completely burns out, Sonic would die. Erazor makes a deal with Sonic: bring the Seven World Rings to him and he would remove the arrow, but because of the curse, he only had a limited time to find the Rings. Unbeknowst to Sonic, Erazor did not intend to help, instead he planned to use Sonic as a sacrifice to fulfill the prophecy of opening the gateway between worlds and gaining ultimate power.
After the rings are collected, Erazor needs to sacrifice Sonic to utilize their full power. As he made his strike, Shahra gets in the way to save Sonic. She slowly dies, begging for Sonic's forgiveness. With the power of the World Rings, Erazor transforms into Alf Layla-wa Layla (which translates to 1,000 and 1 Nights in Arabic), and prepares to recreate the Arabian Nights in his own image before moving on to Sonic's world as he himself WAS the Arabian Nights, though he is incomplete because Sonic is still alive. Three of the World Rings get fused into Sonic, transforming him into Darkspine Sonic. Erazor Djinn then battles Darkspine Sonic trying to sacrafice him as the distant voice of Shahra guides Sonic. After the battle, Erazor reverts back to his normal form, as well as Sonic. Erazor boasts about being immortal, and that he'll always come back after defeat. However, Sonic uses the magic lamp given to him by Shahra, which was inactive at the time, and uses three wishes: to bring Shahra back to life, to restore the stories of the Arabian Nights, and to seal Erazor Djinn away in the lamp for the rest of time. Helpless against the mystic powers of the lamp, the defeated genie was forced to grant them all, and doomed himself to his eternal prison. Sonic later dropped the lamp in the lava pit where Sonic battled the Ifrit Golem and destroyed Erazor.
Fang the Sniper
- For information on the version of Fang as seen in the American Sonic the Hedgehog comics, see Nack the Weasel, and for his appearance in Sonic the Comic, see List of characters in Sonic the Comic#Nack the Weasel
Fang the Sniper (ファング・ザ・スナイパー, Fangu za Sunaipā), also known as Nack the Weasel, is a purple anthropomorphic half-wolf, half-weasel hybrid (full-blooded wolf in the Japanese version) [citation needed] that first appeared in the Game Gear video game Sonic Triple Trouble as an expert treasure hunter in search of the Chaos Emeralds. Fang is from another dimension, the mysterious Special Zone. Manuals mention that he is obsessed with valuables, jewels and money, and has interests in beautiful women. He wears a large, brown stetson, brown and white boots, and brown gloves with metal plates on them. He is very competent and sneaky, but his overconfidence occasionally leads to failure. He is often seen with his air-bike, the Marvelous Queen.
The character was originally conceived as Fang the Sniper, the name by which he was known in the Japanese Sonic games but this was briefly changed in the European and American releases to "Nack the Weasel". This name was used in his debut game, Sonic Triple Trouble, and the comic books he also appears in, but all games released after Sonic Triple Trouble have called him "Fang", regardless of language. It is interesting to note that promotional materials called him "Jet the Sniper"[citation needed], but it is unknown if this is a name during development or an early localization attempt.
Fang the Sniper is the only Sonic character to have only four fingers even in Japanese promotional art. This may be a reference to the ritual of Yubitsume to make Fang seem like a Yakuza-like character.
Fang the Sniper has appeared in Sonic Triple Trouble, Sonic Drift 2, Tails Adventures, and Sonic the Fighters. In addition, he was set to appear in Sonic X-treme, but did not due to its cancellation. He was last mentioned in a DVD-ROM flash comic that came with Sonic and the Secret Rings.
Ifrit
In Sonic and the Secret Rings, a boss called the Ifrit Golem appears. Shara refers to him as "a djinn that controls fire." He bears some resemblance to Iblis, but appears to be a mechanical entity. The Ifrit was summoned by the Erazor Djinn to burn the pages of the Arabian Nights. Like Iblis, the Ifrit is invincible until Sonic uses the power of the Water Blue World Ring to create a storm, reducing the Ifrit's heat. When Ifrit is summoned Iblis is mentioned in Erazor's incantation, the Ifrit was referred to by Erazor as a being sent to the abyss by Iblis.
Metal Knuckles
Just as Metal Sonic is the robot counterpart to Sonic, Metal Knuckles is the doppelgänger of Knuckles the Echidna. He has Knuckles's strength, with even greater speed. In terms of videogames, Metal Knuckles only appeared in Sonic R, where he was a faster version of Knuckles with a better gliding ability but with worse traction. Metal Knuckles was the character that went through the most shortcuts when played by the computer, so following this character was the easiest way to find the quickest route to the finish line.
A robotic Knuckles also appears as a boss in Sonic Advance, though whether it is Metal Knuckles or not is unclear. This robot looks like a pink Knuckles with yellow gloves at first, and has virtually every move Knuckles has. After being struck a few times his "armor" will fall off, revealing a metallic echidna with glowing red eyes underneath. In this "form", the robot is faster and can fire homing missiles from its mouth. After being attacked another three times, the robot explodes.
Though he doesn't qualify as a villain, a character similar to Metal Knuckles appeared in the Sonic the Hedgehog Archie comics when Knuckles underwent Roboticization, tranforming him into the formidable Mecha Knuckles, who retained his free will through the use of a Neuro Override device. Mecha Knuckles was then pitted against Mecha Sonic until both of them were De-Roboticized.
Solaris
Solaris is the sun god of Soleanna and the main antagonist of Sonic the Hedgehog. Solaris initially exists as a tiny flame which is worshiped by the citizens of Soleanna. The Duke of Soleanna leads experiments into Solaris, in the hopes of using its time control powers to allow humanity to correct its past sins. However, during one such experiment, Solaris becomes unstable and splits into two forms - Iblis, the raw power, and Mephiles, the conscious mind. Mephiles is sealed into an artifact known as the "Scepter of Darkness" whilst the Duke is forced to seal Iblis inside of his young daughter, Princess Elise The Third. Before dying from wounds caused by the accident, he tells his daughter to grow up to be a strong queen who would never cry as doing so would destroy the seal on Iblis.
After killing Sonic, Mephiles is quick to rejoin with his counterpart after its release from Princess Elise, once again forming their complete form of Solaris. Still enraged at being tampered with during the Solaris Project, Solaris plunges the world into darkness, preparing to bring the end of time itself. Before he can achieve this, he is defeated by a combined assault of Sonic, Shadow, and Silver using super transformation. During the battle against them, Solaris attacks by shooting meteors and firing out lasers, and increasing the amount of meteors and laser he uses during his second form. His defeat spirits Elise and Sonic back to before the fateful experiment. After some contemplation, Elise chooses to blow out the tiny flame that was Solaris and thus change history by erasing him from existence.
Iblis
Iblis is an immortal monster of mass destruction that represents the raw power of Solaris. It acts as the main villain in Silver the Hedgehog's story in Sonic the Hedgehog. It is released from Princess Elise during the main timeline, and starts to ravage the world for hundreds of years into the time period of Silver the Hedgehog. In Silver's story, Silver the Hedgehog and Blaze the Cat continuously battle Iblis, but it always ends up proving too powerful for either of them to defeat for good as it can continually resurrect itself. In order to defeat Iblis in that timeline, Blaze is forced to seal it within her, seemingly destroying both of them, but really transporting it to another dimension. In the main timeline, Mephiles kills Sonic and causes Elise to cry and therefore breaks Iblis' seal. Once this happens, Mephiles then merges with Iblis to reform Solaris. After Solaris is defeated, Iblis is erased from time.
Mephiles the Dark
Mephiles the Dark is the main villain of Shadow the Hedgehog's story and the evil mastermind behind all the events in Sonic the Hedgehog. Mephiles is the other half of Solaris, and is the conscious mind and will of Solaris. He is sealed in the "Scepter of Darkness" by Shadow the Hedgehog, who had traveled through time to ten years before the events of Sonic the Hedgehog. In the present, Dr. Eggman accidentally releases him when he causes Rouge the Bat to drop the Scepter. When he is released, Mephiles uses Shadow's shadow to reawaken and Shadow sees Mephiles is a near exact physical duplicate of himself, but with slightly different colors. He seeks to get the Chaos Emeralds and bring pain and despair to Princess Elise, with the goals of making her cry, therefore releasing Iblis, the "Flames of Disaster", and then fuse with him, becoming Solaris. And without Sonic to aid on the fight, all appears lost. He uses his powers to manipulate Sonic, Shadow, and Silver into fulfilling his needs throughout the various story lines. In the end, Mephiles kills Sonic, causing Elise to cry over his death and, as a result, release Iblis, allowing Mephiles to fuse with him and transform into Solaris. Mephiles is destroyed along with Solaris during a battle against Shadow, Silver and a revived Sonic in super form. Mephiles is voiced by Takayuki Sakazume in the Japanese-speaking version of Sonic the Hedgehog, and is voiced by Dan Green in the English-speaking version.
Mephiles has many powers, including the ability to travel through time and throwing purple balls that are the same as the balls he travels inside when time traveling. He has another ability that allows him to make numerous 'shadows' which are floating forms with one blank eye, and a similar look to a cartoon ghost. With a Chaos Emerald, Mephiles is able to form unlimited copies of himself.
Tails Doll
The Tails Doll (also mistakenly called "Puppet Tails") is a doll version of Miles "Tails" Prower built by Dr. Eggman. It is a secret character in the racing game Sonic R, unlocked by finding the 5 tokens in the "Radical City" track, finishing 1st, 2nd or 3rd in the race, and then defeating Tails Doll in a race. Tails Doll has poor handling, average acceleration and average top speed. Its jumping abilities are quirky, too, since it cannot jump very high, but has a strange floating ability as its "air action". It is also the only character who can float over the water without slowing down after a period of time. Tails Doll is also one of the few characters who did not appear in the character poll by Sonic Channel, which featured multiple exceedingly obscure characters, such as Ray, Bean, and Bark.[3] Tails-shaped dolls also appeared in Sonic Adventure along with Sonic and Knuckles ones, this time as targets in Eggman's shooting gallery.
Void
Void is the imp-like villain from Sonic Shuffle. At the start of the game, Void shatters the mysterious Precioustone, which controls his world, Maginary World. Sonic and friends then set out on a quest to defeat him and repair the stone. Throughout the game, Void shows signs of depression and loneliness which touches the hearts of Sonic and his friends who, in turn, want to help him amidst the evilness within him. At the end of the game, it turns out that Void is needed for the balance in Maginary World, as he is the nothingness that gives people the ability to dream. He is in fact one half of Maginary World's ruler Illumina. Lumina is the other half. As such, Sonic and his friends do not defeat him, and leave Maginary World knowing that Lumina and Void cancel each other out. Cosmo from Sonic X bears an eerie resemblance to both Void and Lumina.
Captain Whisker
Captain Whisker is a robotic pirate who heavily resembles Dr. Eggman. He is the main villain for the upcoming Sonic Rush Adventure. [4]
Wendy Witchcart
Wendy Witchcart is an old human witch who rides around in a fancy rail cart on an island she claims as her own, and is the main villain of Tails' Skypatrol. She says she is able to turn any dissenters into crystal. In the game, the goal of Tails is to free the island and its inhabitants from her tyranny. Aside from an army of robots, Wendy's main lackeys are:
- Fockewulf, a blue male wolf who rides a flying bike. He appears to be named after Focke-Wulf, a German company known for manufacturing military aircraft for the Luftwaffe during the second World War. Fockewulf is the first boss of the game, fighting Tails in Rail Canyon, the second level (the first level has no boss). He fights by throwing grenades at Tails, which explode into four pieces on impact.
- Bearenger, a black male bear who rides a small flying rocket with a shark face similar to the Flying Tigers fighter planes from World War II. He is the boss of Ruin Wood, the third level. Bearenger fights by firing energy projectiles in sets of three from his rocket.
- Carrotia, an orange female rabbit who flies in a flying carrot. She wears a bow and is the boss of Metal Island, the fourth level, where she fights by firing small carrot-shaped homing missiles and throwing kisses.
