An 11th century stronghold for the Comte de Blois, the first castle was built on a high terrace at the edge of the Chinon forest overlooking the Indre Valley. In the 15th Century Ussé was purchased by the Bueil family. Antoine de Bueil rebuilt Ussé in the 1460s. Antoine was heavy in debt and in 1485, sold the château to Jacques d’Espinay. Jacques continued work on the castle.
