Paraíso is the name of the second canton in the province of Cartago in Costa Rica. The canton covers an area of 411.91 km² (1) , and has a population of 55,923 (2). The capital city of the canton is also called Paraíso.

Paraíso is an elongated canton that stretches southeast from its capital city to encompass a swatch of the Cordillera de Talamanca (Talamanca Mountain Range).

The canton of Paraíso is subdivided into 4 distritos (districts).

1. Paraíso District

2. Santiago de Paraíso

3. Orosi de Paraíso

4. Cachí de Paraíso

History

Paraíso was first mentioned as a canton in a decree dated December 7, 1848.
