Agenda 21 is a program of the United Nations related to sustainable development, unveiled at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, June 3 - June 14, 1992. More than 178 governments voted to adopt Agenda 21. George H.W. Bush signed on behalf of the United States.

Five years after the Earth Summit, in 1997, another conference was called to evaluate progress made in implementing Agenda 21.
