"Umbrella"
Song

"Umbrella" is a song performed by Bajan singer Rihanna. It was written by Terius "The Dream" Nash and Shawn "Jay-Z" Carter for Rihanna's third studio album, Good Girl Gone Bad.

The song has been phenomenally successful and simultaneously topped the UK (where it topped the chart at number one for the ten consecutive weeks, and was Rihanna's first number-one single)[1], Canadian, Irish, German, United States, Australian, New Zealand, Polish, Austrian, Belgian, Norwegian and Swiss charts, along with the United World Chart.

The song was covered by Biffy Clyro during an appearance on Radio One's Live Lounge.[2] Scott Simons also made cover version, the song is being played by many radio stations.[3]

Background, single release and lyrics

According to the songwriters, the song was offered to many labels before being recorded by Rihanna. The song was originally offered to Mary J Blige, however she turned it down.[4]

In many parts of the U.S., the single was released on March 28, 2007,[5] although its proper release date was March 29, 2007.[6] The song premiered on the New York radio station Hot 97 and on her official website on March 29 at 5:00pm EST.

It premiered on UK radio station BBC Radio 1 on the Scott Mills show. In the UK, the song was released digitally on May 14, 2007 with the physical CD release following on May 28 2007, one week before the album was released.[7][8]

Many major radio stations in Los Angeles, Boston and New York City have played versions of the song that either shortened or completely removed Jay-Z's rap. On the issue dated April 28, 2007, the single debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 at number ninety-one. It eventually went on to spend seven weeks at number one before falling to number two and is Rihanna's fifth top ten Hot 100 single in under two years.

To date, the song has been well-received by critics.[citation needed]

Rapper Lil' Mama is featured on the remix, in which her first verse replaces Jay-Z's verse, and she has a second verse in the middle of the song. The remix was leaked to urban radio stations. On the Def Jam website a Travis Barker rock remix surfaced.

Remixes

Chris Brown wrote an answer song titled "Cinderella" with the same melody but different lyrics. It had been released to radio stations by June 12, 2007. In it his verse replaces Rihanna's second verse, but they share the third verse and the final chorus. His chorus, however, differs from Rihanna's: instead of "You can stand under my umbrella", he sings "You can be my Cinderella". It is unofficially titled "Cinderella Under the Umbrella". The remix was not well-received on Pop radio, and most Pop stations stopped playing it because of complaints from listeners. However, the "Cinderella" remix is exclusively played in most Urban radio formats where the original version initially received little attention. A rumor is spreading about Rihanna and Chris doing a video for the umbrella remix and others are anticipating a forthcoming video. There is also a remix featuring Lil' Mama, who sung the song, Lip Gloss

Jody den Broeder, The Lindbergh Palace and Seamus Haji & Paul Emanuel provided dance mixes for the song. These remixes helped the song achieve the number one position on both Billboard's club and dance radio charts.

Promotion

Rihanna has been making formal appearances all over the United Kingdom. She also performed three of her new songs in Preston at the BBC Radio 1 One Big Weekend event. At a mini/promotional concert, she performed "Umbrella", "Shut Up and Drive" and "Breakin' Dishes". Rihanna performed the song at the MTV Movie Awards 2007. In Germany she performed the song exclusively at Viva Live and the 42nd edition of the highly popular chart show The Dome. "Umbrella" was also performed live on Live Earth, GMTV, Loose Women, Blue Peter, Kiss Concert 2007, Sprint Concert, Zoopotia Show, Stripped Show, Canadian Idol and The View. Before Rihanna performed Umbrella live on Live Earth, BBC Radio 1, Stripped Show, Zoopotia Show and the Kiss Concert 2007, the song featured an old song "Love To Love You Baby" by Donna Summer. Rihanna is to go on tour in December.

Music video

The music video was shot on April 13, 2007[9] and was directed by Chris Applebaum. It premiered at 10:00 a.m. on April 26, 2007 at http://www.thisisrihanna.com. Downloads were made available for those in the U.S only. The video was released on the iTunes Store on May 11, 2007. It remained at number one for eight weeks, until being replaced by Sean Kingston's "Beautiful Girls"

The video starts with Jay-Z rapping in a rain of sparks. Rihanna starts singing in a steamy place. During the first chorus, she can be seen apparently walking around en pointe. Later, Rihanna is seen nude and painted silver, in various positions. In the endcap of the video, she dances with her umbrella amid a shower of sparks falling like rain, where Jay-Z was rapping at the beginning of the video.

There are two different versions of the video. The version that premiered on April 30, 2007 on MTV is different from the one that aired online. In the MTV version, water effects were added during the splashing sequence. This version is shown on television stations and on some websites. On May 14, 2007, the "Umbrella" video premiered on BET's 106 & Park at number nine and has peaked at number four as of May 30, 2007 , Rihanna's first video to chart on the countdown since her debut single, "Pon de Replay", in 2005. In this version, she can also be seen walking en pointe and the added water effects can be seen. On May 1, 2007, "Umbrella" debuted on MTV's Total Request Live at number ten, and by May 9 it had reached the number-one spot, where it has spent a total of 15 days and has been on the countdown for 38 days, its no longer eligible for voting online due to "Shut Up and Drive".

Chart performance

"Umbrella" became the first song by a female artist to debut at number one on the official UK Singles Chart solely on download sales. The song entered the charts at number one on May 20, 2007[10] selling 34,164 downloads that week. This also made Rihanna achieve her first UK number-one single. "Umbrella" also broke the UK record for the most consecutive weeks at number one in the 21st century with ten weeks, beating Gnarls Barkley's 2006 hit, "Crazy", which spent nine weeks at number one. Rihanna also became only the seventh artist in the history of the UK Singles Chart to score a tenth week at number one.[11] After ten weeks at number one it has reached sales of 362,054. "Umbrella" is the longest-running number one since "Love Is All Around" by Wet Wet Wet in 1994 (spent 15 weeks).[1] This period has also coincided with a period of extreme rainfall and flooding in the UK and Ireland, leading some to jokingly suggest that the two events are related, calling it the "Rihanna Curse".[12] On July 29 2007, it was finally knocked off the number one spot by Timbaland's The Way I Are. Coincidently, the weather in the UK and Ireland also improved, with London expecting temperatures as high as 26 degrees celsius, with no rain forecast.

In Australia, the single entered the ARIA Singles Chart at number one and remained there for six weeks, becoming Rihanna's second number-one single (after "SOS"). It debuted at number one on the ARIA Urban Chart and has remained there for four weeks. While the song was at the top of the Urban Charts, two other songs (SOS and Unfaithful), from her previous album, were also on the chart.

On the issue dated June 9, "Umbrella" topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart with a rise from number forty-one to number one; the song was downloaded 277,000 times in the United States, the highest debut-week sum since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking downloads in 2003.[13] It was also Rihanna's second number-one song on the chart, after "SOS",[14] and both songs have records for two of the biggest jumps to number-one on the Hot 100 chart.

The song set a record on the iTunes Music Store with the biggest debut in iTunes' six-year history, according to the download site, beating a record previously held by Shakira and Wyclef Jean's "Hips Don't Lie".[citation needed] Its digital sales now stand at more than 1,500,000.[citation needed] On July 3, Umbrella fell to number two on the iTunes Music Store Top 100 Songs Chart due to heavy sales for Hey There Delilah by the Plain White T's. As a digital single, "Umbrella" topped the iTunes Store singles chart in 15 different countries. In the U.S., it moved 277,000 downloads in the first week it was released as a digital single, beating Shakira's "Hips Don't Lie" and "Beyoncé's Irreplaceable, but behind Fergie's "Fergalicious" which had downloads 295,000 in early January. The song has received massive airplay all over the world. It occupied more than 12 number one positions, including the U.K. singles chart and U.S. Billboard chart. The song also holds notable claim as being the first number one song to appear on Billboard magazine's Canadian Hot 100 chart, debuting on June 7, 2007.[15] It reached number one on the United World Chart.

The single debuted at number thirty-nine in the Latin America Top 40, and in its gaining points, it's currently peaking at #14.[16]

In Spain it reached number sixteen on the Download Chart on its second week, and it's having heavy airplay in some radio stations like Los 40 Principales, Europa FM, Radio Flaixback, Radio Marina, Euskatea Radio and others.

According to Radio and Records it is currently the most-listened-to Urban song.[17]

On July 29th 2007, Umbrella fell two places to number three on the official UK chart, beaten by Timbaland's new song "The Way I Are". Nevertheless, it held the number one spot for a record ten weeks.[18]
