Tony Jones (football commentator)

Tony Jones (born 26th May 1958) is a football (soccer) broadcaster based in England. He has contributed to all the commercial UK broadcasting outlets - Sky Sports, five, Channel 4 and ITV - commentating on everything from the UEFA Champions League to the English non-League.

He was part of the Hostbroadcastservices (HBS) team at the 2006 World Cup, and his voice has been heard on games distributed overseas by TWI/IMG and Octagon/BT.

He has won a Royal Television Society award for his sports reporting, and has also been responsible for producing several programmes.

Work with ITV

Jones began his career in ITV in 1982 at Anglia Television in Norwich, where he joined a sports department that included Gerry Harrison, an established network commentator who was to later hold an executive position with TWI.

Jones commentated on football and produced a number of programmes - including a look at the horse racing industry in Newmarket and the arrival in England of Sergei Baltacha, the first footballer from the Ukraine to play in the West following the collapse of the old Soviet Union. He also won a Royal Televison Society award for his journalism.

For the ITV network, he has been a regular contributor to The Championship and has also commentated on the later stages of the UEFA Cup, including the quarter-finals and semi-finals during the 2006/07 season.

Work with Channel 4

Jones worked with Channel 4 in early 2004, commentating on the Copa Libertadores with Tim Caple. He occasionally commentated on highlights of Ligue 1.

Work with five

Jones's work so far with five has included the UEFA Cup as well as internationals and the Argentine and Dutch Leagues.

Work with Sky Sports

Jones has been covering games for Sky Sports since 2002, starting with the German Bundesliga.

Since 2004, he has been part of their team of commentators for Football First - covering the English Premier League.

He has also been a regular member of their team for the UEFA Champions League and has covered live games in the Football League, the Nationwide Conference and the schools' Victory Shield.

Other credits include the Copa America in both 2007 and 2004.

Other Credits

Jones worked for the Host Broadcaster at the 2006 World Cup and was part of their commentary team at the World Under-20 Championships in 2005. His voice was heard on the world commentary feed from the Amsterdam Tournament and Port of Rotterdam Tournament in August 2007. He has provided commentary on games for the ESPN Classics channel, as well as voice over for various golf and aquatic programming.
