The Powerpuff Girls are a trio of superheroines who are the title characters of the Cartoon Network cartoon The Powerpuff Girls and its spin-off anime, Demashita! Powerpuff Girls Z.

Origin

In the Powerpuff Girls, the Powerpuff Girls were created by Professor Utonium out of "Sugar, spice and everything nice" and the accidental addition of Chemical X (having been bumped by his then lab assistant, Jojo, later to become Mojo Jojo.) After the events of The Powerpuff Girls Movie, they "dedicated their lives to fighting crime and the forces of evil."

Appearance in the Powerpuff Girls

The girls are drawn with physical traits that make them exaggeratedly cute. They wear dresses with black belts, white stockings and black Mary Janes. They have large eyes and heads, and, although they are able to hear, smell, and hold, their bodies are drawn without noses, ears, fingers, or toes. Although they are humans, they look like dolls. Whether they actually have these features is not clear; in the episodes "Criss Cross Crisis", when the girls switch bodies with other people in Townsville, Buttercup, who had swapped bodies with Professor Utonium, complained that his hand did not work (meaning that the Girls' fingerless hands could pick things up at will.) However, in the same episode, Bubbles, in the Mayor's body, is seen using a toothbrush without trouble, and the characters who are in the Girls' bodies have no issue holding objects. Additionally, Bubbles counts on her unseen fingers in the episode "Mo Job." However, in "Oops, I did it again", the Professor dreams of normal versions of the girls, each with the aforementioned features clearly depicted.

Powers

In The Powerpuff Girls

The Powerpuff Girls have many superpowers like those possessed by Superman, including:

  • Super-strength
  • Flight
  • Super-speed
  • X-ray vision
  • Ability to project a variety of kinetic blasts
  • Limited invulnerability
  • Ability to survive in outer space

In some cases, they utilize special team maneuvers to take down their foes. These Include:

  • Sonic screams
  • Ferocious Fiery Feline (the girls combine to create a cat of pure fire, a homage to the "Fiery Phoenix" of Battle of the Planets)
  • A triple attack from side to side and front
  • Creating after-image doubles (who can also fight)
  • Morphing into a ball to save people or strike them out
  • A twister with devastating after-effects
  • A frontal triple attack performed with a screw-like trajectory.

In Demashita! Powerpuff Girls Z

Like the original Powerpuff Girls, the Powerpuff Girls Z possess the ability to fly and super strength, and their outfits seem to be indestructible (or at least very durable).[1] In addition, each of the girls wields a weapon, a super-powered version of toys being played with by children they protected from the white light which made them Powerpuff Girls.[2]

  • Momoko (Blossom) uses a yo-yo, the string of which can extend and retract at will, giving Blossom full control over its movements. Blossom can also control the spin on the yo-yo as well as have it emit pink energy blasts. Blossom currently has the most attacks of any of the three girls. She introduces a new attack every episode. The names of her attacks are mainly based on sweets and she never repeats the same sweet name in other episodes. Momoko has no real main attack as she will use a different attack every episode, but many of the attacks resemble the Shooting Yo-yo and Spinning Yo-yo attacks in the first episode with some attacks having additional properties, such as a multi-hit property or the ability to catch objects. Momoko, like the original Blossom, can also throw her ribbon like a bomb at the enemy.
  • Miyako (Bubbles) uses a bubble wand. Originally, Bubbles used it as a throwing weapon until Blossom later admonishes her as it is an incorrect way of using it (though it worked equally well that way). Instead, the wand is used to send a wave of bubbles that can either harm or immobilize the opponent or protect her friends and civilians, depending on her intent. Usually, Bubbles sends the bubbles by waving the wand, but she can also blow into it. Her attacks include "Bubble Champagne", "Balloon Catcher", "Bubble Poyon" (Boing), "Shabon Freedom Finish", "Energy Ball" and "Bubble Popper". She also has the ability to talk to animals, similar to her ability to talk to squirrels in the original version.
  • Kaoru (Buttercup) uses a hammer. Her weapon is mainly a close range weapon, although she can also send energy projectiles and extend her hammer to attack at long range. Her weapon is considered the heaviest of the three and only she can carry it with ease. Blossom and Bubbles can barely lift it together. Her attacks include "Megaton Dunk", "Graviton Drive", "Swing Sonic", and "Hurricane Lutz".
  • In Episode 46, and again in Episode 51, the girls gain the ability to combine their powers into one of three super attacks, with the nature of attack depending on who delivers the last blow. Blossom's super attack involves her yoyo growing to enormous size, splitting open and electrocuting or crushing her enemies. Buttercup's super attack lets her hammer grow to an amazingly giant size, easily crushing her enemies. Bubbles' super attack involves blowing large bubbles that pop to reveal large metal structures that crush large enemies.

In the Powerpuff Girls

Blossom (voiced by Catherine Cavadini) is a character in animated television series The Powerpuff Girls. The self-proclaimed leader of the three Powerpuff Girls. She is often seen as the most mature, level-headed and composed member of the group, although she can also be fussy, overbearing, vain, and overly analytical at time. She also sometimes tends to be bossy with Bubbles and Buttercup. One episode, "A Very Special Blossom", also showed a darker side to Blossom, when she resorted to looting. Her special superpower is "Ice Breath" as revealed in the episode "Ice Sore", though in the same episode she has been known to breathe fire. Blossum has an ability unique among the powerpuff girls to speak Japenese. (Contuary to Bubbles knowlege of many foreign languages).

Blossum is seen always, when not in the battlefield, to be much like her sisters. Though the most mature, she is a regular again when sure she is not in danger. Blossum is shown to lavish itellegeance inhancing toys and is often seen in her freetime curled up with a good book or letting her sisters brush her elegeant red hair.

In the Powerpuff Girls

Bubbles (voiced by Tara Strong in the series and Kath Soucie in the What-a-Cartoon!) is a fictional character in animated television series The Powerpuff Girls. She is portrayed as having short blonde hair in two pigtails, light blue eyes, and dresses in light blue. The ending theme refers to her as "the joy and the laughter", meaning that she acts as the baby of the group (despite being the same age) and is defined by innocence, playfulness and gentle demeanor. She does, however, have a tendency to be naive, ditzy, submissive and overemotional, leading to her often being regarded, by friends and foes alike, as the group's weak link. However, she can become very independent and aggressive when pushed, and out of all the Powerpuff girls she is the most feared by Mojo Jojo after having single handedly taken him down in a fit of rage in one episode. Her special superpower is that she can speak many languages, including Spanish (speaking) and Japanese (both reading and speaking), and communicate with animals, such as cats, and most notably squirrels (as revealed in the episode "Fuzzy Logic" and again in "Stray Bullet"). She also has the Sonic Scream (although later other girls seem to be able to use a weaker version too).

Miyako Gotokuji (Rolling Bubbles)

In Demashita! Powerpuff Girls Z, Bubbles' real name is Miyako Gotokuji (豪徳寺みやこ, Gōtokuji Miyako) / Rolling Bubbles (ローリング・バブルス, Rōringu Baburusu, Seiyū: Nami Miyahara). She transforms using the phrase "Rolling Bubbles" and uses a bubble wand as a weapon. In comparison to the original Bubbles, who was known for being the most childish of the girls, Miyako is the ditsiest member of the three, often appearing a bit clueless, and doesn't seem to understand her powers completely, along with a few other things. She is the only member of the girls who, like some villains, end a few sentences with a phrase; hers is desu wa. She is, however, a little more mature than some of the girls in the team and will try to calm any situation, although she too can be angered when provoked. She is also very polite and always uses honorifics at the end of names. She is more concerned with shopping, her appearance and her outfits, and perhaps because of this, she seems to be very popular among her male classmates. While she seems oblivious to the many boys that love her, she already "loves" Takaaki (or Taka-chan as she called him), a boy on whom she maybe has had a crush ever since she was six years old. She retains her hairstyle during the reimagining, but her pigtails are slightly longer, and curl into ringlets. She also uses curlers (3 balls on each pigtail) when going to bed. Miyako/Bubbles remains typified, however, by the original's compassion, gentleness and innocence, as well as her love of animals and her favorite doll, Octi. In episode 34, it is revealed she lives with only her grandmother. Her parents live in Milano. The reason for this is yet left unexplained. She is represented by bubbles.

In the Powerpuff Girls

Buttercup (voiced by E.G. Daily) is a fictional character in animated television series The Powerpuff Girls. She has short black hair in a flip, light green eyes, and dresses in light green. Referred to in the ending theme as "the toughest fighter", she is the group's tomboy. Sometimes her aggression gets the better of her, making her reckless, stubborn and too aggressive. She possesses a mean and somewhat vindictive streak not shared by her sisters. She also showed a selfish side in the episode "Moral Decay," to which she knocked out everyone's teeth for money. She has shown a softer side in several episodes, however. For example, in the episode "Cover Up", she had a soft green blanket that she was obsessed with that she would hug that gave her the confidence to be a better fighter. Her personality is similar to that of Numbuh 4 from Codename: Kids Next Door. In the episode "Nuthin' Special", her special "ability" is to roll her tongue (Blossom and Bubbles cannot do this, and nor can anyone else in Townsville) revealed. While she doesn't seem to have any special superpower different from her sisters, she is usually physically the strongest of the three girls (though Bubbles and Blossom have shown to be stronger on special occasions). In the episode "Speed Demon" it was also revealed that she can fly slightly faster than her sisters. In the "Rowdyruff Boys", she has a tremendous disdain for resorting to kissing the boys in order to eliminate them, though willingly kisses a boy ridden with she feared to be "cooties" in a later episode.

In Demashita! Powerpuff Girls Z

Kaoru Matsubara (Powered Buttercup)

In Demashita! Powerpuff Girls Z, Buttercup's real name is Kaoru Matsubara (松原かおる, Matsubara Kaoru) / Powered Buttercup (パワード・バターカップ, Pawādo Batākappu, Seiyū: Machiko Kawana). She transforms using the phrase "Powered Buttercup" and uses a Daruma Otoshi hammer. Like the original Buttercup, Kaoru is a tomboy and is the most easily enraged of the three. She is known at school for being the most athletic girl as she plays tennis, practices martial arts, and numerous other activities, and spends a great deal of time watching sports on television. She is especially good at soccer due to her strengthened determination after receiving new soccer cleats when she was younger. This may be part of the reason why she has so many fangirls in the beginning of the series, much to her dismay. She dislikes girls, who she considers very "girly". This includes Momoko and Miyako. This, in addition to the fact that she hates skirts, makes Kaoru the most reluctant of the girls, only joining due to the power it has given her. In later episodes, she begins to care about Momoko and Miyako and is no longer reluctant about joining them in whatever they do, but she often tries to act calm and indifferent. She speaks with a hard and masculine edge and rarely uses honorifics when speaking. Her greatest fear is ghosts. Kaoru lives with her father, who is a professional masked-wrestler, mother and two brothers, one older and one younger. She is represented by stars.

  • In the episode "Twisted Sister", the girls created a fourth Powerpuff Girl named Bunny (voiced by Christine Cavanaugh), who was huge, hunchbacked and at least eight feet tall and had a rather semi-articulate caveman-like voice, brown hair in a ponytail, a single tooth protruding from her mouth, purple eyes, and dressed in purple. Instead of following the recipe properly, the girls instead used imitation items of all the ingredients: artificial sweetener instead of sugar, twigs and leaves instead of spice, and everything the girls enjoyed as "everything nice". Bunny appears to be mentally disabled, and is also rather deformed. She was also extremely naive; she thought that having a gun made a person a criminal, and when she confronted two cops taking in a couple of crooks and brandishing guns, she threw the cops into jail, and started to release criminals, thinking they were good. When all the criminals in town attacked the girls, Bunny redeemed herself and beat every criminal soundly. However, she was an unstable composition and exploded during the same episode she was created, leaving behind a piece of her outfit.
  • In the episode "Stray Bullet", the girls briefly added another fourth member, a squirrel with orange Powerpuff Girls-like eyes whom Bubbles had given chemical X, whom they named "Bullet". The Powerpuff Girls first meet Bullet when Bubbles rescued her from an eagle and takes her home. During the night, Bubbles feeds the squirrel a few drops of Chemical X in hopes that it will help her heal faster, which soon leads to Bullet developing powers similar to the girls'. The girls officially adopt her as a Powerpuff Girl, but eventually she returns to the wild out of homesickness. Bullet currently resides in the forests outside Townsville, where she protects the animal community, but she returns to help the Powerpuff Girls from time to time. Her color is orange. She is voiced by Frank Welker.
