Recent news
Senior guard Ibrahim Jaaber [1] was voted the Ivy League Player of the Year for the second straight season in 2007. The vote came from the league's eight men's basketball head coaches.
After winning the Ivy League title once again, the University of Pennsylvania Quakers earned a spot in the NCAA Tournament. They received the 14th seed in the South region. On Thursday, March 15, 2007, No. 14 Penn lost, 68-52, to No. 3 Texas A&M in the first round of the tournament. Despite holding a 39-37 lead near midway through the second half, the Quakers were unable to hold off the Aggies.
The previous season, the Quakers matched up with another team from Texas, the University of Texas. The Quakers surprised the Longhorns as the Red and Blue found themselves with a 23-22 halftime lead at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas. However, Texas forwards LaMarcus Aldridge and P.J. Tucker combined for 36 points and 24 rebounds as the Longhorns eventually outlasted the Quakers. The game was also the 473rd and final game as Quakers head coach for Fran Dunphy. Temple signed Dunphy to replace legendary coach John Chaney after leading the Red and Blue to a 310-163 record and 10 Ivy League championships over the course of 17 seasons.
The Quakers lose seniors Jaaber, Zoller, and Danley for the 2007-2008 campaign. However, the Red and Blue return two starters, second team All-Ivy League player Brian Grandieri and freshman Darren Smith. It is also possible that the Quakers will regain the services of former starting guard David Whitehurst of Tinton Falls , N.J., who was dismissed from the university for academic reasons.
One of Penn's most memorable season came in 1979 when the Quakers advanced to the NCAA Tournament Final Four. With players such as Tony Price, the Quakers stunned the nation with victories over Iona, North Carolina, Syracuse, and St. John's to advance to the Final Four. The Quakers faced Earvin "Magic" Johnson and Michigan State in the national semifinals in Salt Lake City, Utah, but ultimately were met with defeat, 101-67. Other notable Penn teams include the team lead by guards Matt Maloney and Jerome Allen during the mid-1990s and the nationally-ranked teams of the early 1970s led by Dave Wohl, Steve Bilsky, Corky Calhoun and Bob Morse. Penn's 1970-71 team completed an undefeated regular season (26-0) and advanced to the Eastern Regional Final in the NCAA Tournament, losing there to Villanova.
The last NCAA Tournament victory for the Quakers came on March 17, 1994, at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale, New York. The No. 11 Red and Blue defeated the No. 6 Nebraska Cornhuskers, 90-80, in the first round. The Quakers fell in the second round to No. 3 Florida on March 19, 1994, as the Gators prevailed, 70-58.
