Madeline Margaret Genevieve Miranda Catherine Fitzpatrick more commonly known as Maddie, is a fictional character on the Disney Channel sitcom The Suite Life of Zack & Cody. Maddie has also appeared in an episode of Hannah Montana. Maddie is portrayed by Ashley Tisdale.

Background

Maddie is a 16-year-old girl who lives in an apartment building in Boston, Massachusetts across the street from Fenway Park. She works as the candy counter girl at the Tipton Hotel, though she isn't paid much. (She doesn't get paid overtime and only makes $6.00 an hour.) She also works as the Tipton's temporary day care worker.

She is passionate, quite intelligent (she was once seen figuring out the price of a customer's purchase, plus tax, before the cash register could) and dresses casually, often in her Catholic school's uniform. Most of the time Maddie wears her Tipton Hotel uniform with a touch of her father Irving's necktie. Maddie has been known to be very sarcastic. She is lower-class, the exact opposite of her best friend, London Tipton. Maddie doesn't own a car and is sometimes bribed and treated as a servant by London, but she still values their friendship. She is often very cynical and doubtful at times. Maddie also works at the Cluck Bucket, although she is fired in the only episode that she appears in while working there because of London. But in the same episode, London buys The Cluck Bucket and hires Maddie back. However, she sometimes mentions that she works there on weekends. In Season 3, Maddie offers to be a summer camp counselor of Camp Heaven on Earth, and is replaced temporarily at the candy counter. Due to Tisdale's commitment to High School Musical 2 she is not in all the episodes of season 3, however she come's back soon in the upcoming episodes.

Maddie often babysits the twins for Carey. Zack has a big crush on Maddie, and often calls her "sweet thang". Maddie alternately ignores, is annoyed or amused by the crush (occasionally, if she wants something from Zack, she is not above exploiting it.) She does care about Zack and does not want to hurt him. Zack himself pointed out that, given the passage of several years, a three-year-age difference would not be a serious impediment to a relationship between them. Maddie promised to dance with Zack at his prom; given that their ages will seem closer at that point, it is an open question what will occur if neither has found a romantic partner.

She is a strong supporter of environmental causes and she has dreamed of going to Paris, ever since she planned to go there for her parents' 25th anniversary. She wants to go to law school. Maddie is part Irish and is afraid of leprechauns. London's present step-mom, Brandi Tipton, seems to love Maddie and doesn't mind when Maddie calls her "mom", though London refuses to. She also , was the lead singer of a short-lived band named "Water Works".

She is friends with Raven Baxter from That's So Raven and Hannah Montana (from Hannah Montana). She met them in That's So Suite Life of Hannah Montana.

Family

She has a grandmother from Oregon (is shown in Not So Suite 16 ) and one staying at her house who likes to limbo in her pajamas, later mentioned in Day Care and Poor Little Rich Girl. Her father's name is Irving Fitzpatrick. Her trademark tie which complements her uniform at the Tipton is her father's from whom she got the idea. Her mom used to like to listen to country star Robby Ray until she thought he died, as seen in the Hannah Montana crossover episode On the Road Again. Her parents' faces are never seen but they are always arguing. However, in Not So Suite 16, silhouettes of them can be seen behind frosted glass. She also has a brother named Liam (nicknamed "Booger") who appears only in Not So Suite 16 although his antics are seen off-camera in Day Care. Her sister used to live with her but she got married and moved, shown when Mr. Moseby saw her dancing through the lobby singing "My sister got a groom, I got my own room! WHAT!" She also has a dog named Scamp which she calls "Scampers".

• She and London are technically "in-laws" because their dogs are married to each other.
• Maddie is often insulted by London about her hair and her clothing.
• Maddie's birthday may be in April because in the episode Christmas at the Tipton she says her birthstone is a diamond and a diamond is April's birthstone. (Although Maddie may be just saying that to get London to give her one.)
• According to Maddie, a lot of people tell her she looks like Sharpay Evans, a character from High School Musical. (An in-joke because Ashley Tisdale, the actress who portrays Maddie also plays Sharpay) She also asked why people say she doesn't look like Ashley Tisdale and says their crazy.
• Maddie no longer goes to Our Lady Of Perpetual Sorrow as stated when she went out for High School Musical telling Cody "When I was at Our Lady the only part i ever got in a musical was as one of the wise men carrying myrr"

Relationships

Maddie has had many crushes.

• Zack has a crush on Maddie, she does promise to dance with Zack at his prom. He gets super powers and saves her. Zack often has dreams of them together as a couple.
• In Day Care, Randall (Moises Arias), A kid at the Day Care Center had a crush on Maddie, but was never mentioned again.
• In Hotel Hangout she dated Lance, the Tipton's pool lifeguard, but soon dumps him because of his obsession with water.
• In Maddie Checks In, she dated a rich boy named Jason, but he is never mentioned again, although the two have potential for a couple.
• In A Prom Story, she had a crush on a senior named Jeff, who thinks of her as just a little kid.
• In Rumors, Chuck is her second boyfriend, but broke up with Maddie because of the nasty rumor London spread about Maddie and Lance getting back together.
• In Big Hair & Baseball, Maddie goes on a date with a boy named Gavin, who has a tendency to sweat when he is nervous. The date went well, but he is never mentioned again.
• In Odd Couples, Trevor (played by Zac Efron), a visiting merit scholar, seems to like her since they were seen kissing at the end of the episode (although they both said they hated each other), but he is never mentioned again.
• In Twins at the Tipton, she likes a boy named Kirk but ended up having to go out with his rude nerdy brother because Kirk said he was smart. She thought he would be as cute as his brother, so she chose him before she saw him. The brothers turned out to be fraternal twins.
• In Ah! Wilderness!, she goes out with London's ex-boyfriend but it causes a rift between the two.
