This article concerns the characters that play a role in Saint Seiya (also known as Knights of the Zodiac), an anime and manga series about a group of five mystical warriors.

Athena's Saints of the 88 Constellations

  • Saori Kido (城戸沙織 Kido Saori) also known as Athena

The leader of Bronze, Silver and Gold Saints; she is the reincarnation of the Goddess of War and Wisdom, Athena. Though mostly unable to physically fight, she has an extremely powerful cosmos that gives her a notable endurance to pain and extreme conditions (as proved in the Sanctuary, Asgard and Poseidon arcs) and healing/defensive powers (she's arguably the most powerful healer in the whole Saint Seiya universe). She usually channelizes it through a golden aura or her sacred staff.

After Saga (under the guise of the Pope) tried to kill her when she was a baby and that Aiolos rescued her, she was given to Mitsumasa Kido who raised her as his grand daughter. As a child, she was initially very spoiled and rude to the Bronze Saints, but as years passed and she first took over her grandfather's foundation and later discovered she was the new reincarnation of Athena, she acts much more mature and responsible about her mission. She's usually calm and collected, an excellent strategist and very compassionate.

Saori later on commits suicide in the Hades arc to enter the land of the dead and meet Hades face to face. The dagger that she used to slit her own throat is the exact same dagger Saga tried to use against her when Aiolos rescued her in time 13 years ago.

She is known as Princess Sienna in the English manga and the edited English anime.

Seiya is the main character of the series. In most ways, he's a typical shōnen hero, in the sense that he perseveres to the point of risking his life for what he believes in, and is not generally too complex in personality. Although not stunningly bright, Seiya uses and devises many fighting strategies in battle, cleverly adapting his style to the circumstances.

Seiya had an older sister, Seika, who was separated from him by the Kido foundation, and desperately wants to see her again. He trained in the Sanctuary in Greece, under the tutelage of Marin (Silver Saint of Eagle). When he loses his armor in battle against a more powerful adversary, Seiya is often saved by the gold armour of Sagittarius, sent by the spirit Aiolos.

Seiya's technique "Ryu Sei Ken" travels beyond the speed of sound. Therefore if his opponents are near his proximity, Seiya will be able to unleash hundreds of rounds of energy balls per second toward his targets. Initially, these energy balls possessed speed somewhat faster than Mach 1; but as Seiya grew in experience and skill, his attack's speed eventually approached light speed.

Seiya's relationship with Athena was very strained in the beginning, believing her to be a spoiled child at first and fighting alongside her mostly because she promised she'd help her to find his sister if he joined her; but towards Hades Chapter, an amicable relationship blossomed. Due to the knight/Lady-in-liege association, Athena and Seiya never ventured into a romantic relationship.

Nevertheless, Seiya has a strong devotion towards Athena, and in return, Athena has always been strongly empathic towards Seiya. Seiya's true strength comes from within however, since he possesses an undying perseverance. It is this ability and determination that makes him, while not the most powerful Bronze Saint, one of the most dangerous.

It could be said that Shiryu is the most contemplative and least impulsive of the young Bronze Saints. However, he still tends to rush headlong into battles and is a bit too believing in his powers. (Hence his battle with Chrysaor Krishna and his golden lance. He eventually awakens his Excalibur, though and wins.)

Shiryu has extremely destructive powers tamed only by his chivalrous and controlled nature. When fully unleashed, usually when his friends or mission are jeopardized by his enemy, or when an injustice has angered him, the raw fury of Shiryū's attacks is potent enough to kill him along with his enemy. He trained in the Five Ancient Peaks of Mount Rozan, China, under Dohko, the Ancient Master and Gold Saint of Libra. He also has an unclear relationship with Shunrei, an orphan girl that Dohko took in and who lives with him; they treat each other as brother and sister at first, but after Shiryu's fight with Cancer Deathmask it's believed they might love each other romantically.

Shiryu's Cloth includes the Dragon Shield, which is said to be indestructible. It's indestructibility is proven false multiple times, being cut or pierced through by powerful opponents. The Shield, however, *does* offer Shiryū great protection from physical assaults and even some non-physical ones.
Shiryu has an image of a purple, rising dragon on his back that appears during the heat of battle. When the dragon image appears, his cosmo increases dramatically. During the series, it's mentioned that if the dragon ever disappears from Shiryu's back while he is mortally wounded, it means he is dead. When Shiryu fought against Seiya early in the series, Seiya punched his chest hard enough to make the dragon nearly disappear, and Shiryu's heart stopped. However, with Shunrei, Shun and Hyoga's help, he was able to punch Shiryu's chest again to restart his heart and save his life. Shiryu has felt he's greatly in debt to Seiya ever since.
Whereas most other Saints' Cloth gets shattered during battle, Shiryu often willingly takes off his cloth to increase his offensive power. Usually, Shiryu is the Saint that receives more physical damage. Unlike other saints, Shiryu usually utilizes strategy rather than brute force; he blinded himself the first time to defeat Perseus Algol and his Medusa shield that turns anyone into stone who looks at it. He later on regained his eyesight when he defeated Cancer Deathmask. He was blinded a second time during the fight with Chrysaor Krishna in Poseidon chapter. When he enters Hades, he regains his eyesight again the same way he could see when he fought Deathmask during the Sanctuary arc.

Unlike the other Bronze Saints, Hyoga is not a true orphan as he knew his mother and lived with her (although it is implied that Ikki and Shun also knew their parents). He is very strongly attached to his mother, a Russian woman named Natasha, who died when the ship that they were in sank near Siberia. Fortunately, he was sent to train in Siberia under Camus, Gold Saint of Aquarius (the anime has his teacher as the Crystal Saint). He initially trained in order to recover his mother's body, but after a very important incident he dedicated himself fully to becoming the Cygnus Saint: the loss of his partner and best friend Isaac, who disappeared after saving Hyoga's life when he was trying to retrieve Natasha's corpse and failed.
After obtaining the Cygnus cloth, Hyoga was still adamant about visiting his mother Natasha. Camus saw this trait of his as his worst defect, since Hyoga seemed to care more about his mother than to become a true saint. When Hyoga was sent to the Libra House from a space warp caused by the Gemini Gold Saint, Camus confronts him. Camus sees that Hyoga will never become a true Saint if he is still attached to his mother. Camus decides to sink the ship where his mother is so that he can never see her again. Instead of making Hyoga more determined to become a powerful saint, it emotionally destroyed him instead.

Camus had no choice but to put Hyoga inside of an ice coffin so that he wouldn't get killed in battle. However, thanks to Shiryu who broke the coffin with the sword of the Libra Gold Cloth and to Shun who revived him with his cosmo, Hyoga came back to life more powerful than ever.

Hyoga fought bravely against Scorpion Milo and his persistence to keep on going even though he was hit with fourteen blows from Milo's attack, Scarlet Needle, made Milo decide to save his life and let him confront his master Camus face to face instead of killing him with Antares, Scarlet Needle's final blow.

Upon arriving to the house of Aquarius; Hyoga orders Seiya and Shun to move on and not look back. He and Camus fight but Hyoga's attacks don't harm Camus. Camus sees that Hyoga has matured a lot but he isn't powerful enough to defeat him yet. Camus decides to attack Hyoga with Aurora Execution a second time leaving him unconscious. Camus locks him in a second Ice Coffin which can't be broken by the Libra cloth weapons but Hyoga manages to break it with his own cosmo. Camus is surprised Hyoga could drop the temperature of his cosmo below the temperature of the coffin and decides to use Aurora Execution again.
Hyoga (now unconscious but still standing up) positions his own hands to do the Aurora Execution. Camus claims he's too weak to perform the attack at a low enough temperature to defeat his own Aurora Execution but decides to attack Hyoga with Aurora Execution anyways. Hyoga does Aurora Execution as well and both attacks collide.
Camus dies granting Hyoga his permission to use his most powerful attack and Hyoga falls to the ground. He regains consciousness after a while either by himself (in the manga) or healed by Athena (in the anime).
From then on, Hyoga decides to never see Natasha again as a sign of respect towards his master. Hyoga on occasion uses the Aquarius cloth in battle even though he never becomes the new Aquarius Saint.
It's clearly hinted multiple times during the series that Hyoga is a Christian, or at least knows the basics about Christianity. He kept a golden rosary that belonged to Natasha as his most treasured keepsake (in fact, that successfully blocked one of Ikki's blows during their fight), and in the Lucifer movie he explains to Seiya the myth of Lucifer. Often confused for a woman by newcomers to the series, Shun is a rather odd choice for a warrior. He is a pacifist, and as a child was very delicate and hated violence. When the time came to draw names randomly, choosing the orphans who would be sent for the training to be Saints, Shun was chosen to train in the Death Queen Island. Worried that his brother wouldn't survive, Ikki took his place instead. Shun was then sent to Andromeda Island in the Indian Ocean, and trained under Daidalos (Silver Saint of Cepheus). In battle he uses two chains: one in the left hand for defense and one in the right hand for attack. The defense chain, called "circle chain", has its tip shaped like a ring. It has the ability of circling around Shun, protecting him like a steel wall. The attack chain, called, "triangle chain", is responsible for the offensive capabilities of the armor. It is able to find and attack the enemy no matter how far away they may be. Shun also possesses a great power he seldom uses; it is called "Nebula Storm", following the shape of Andromeda's nebula. In order for his cosmos to be able to use this power, he must remove his armor, exposing himself (however, he doesn't remove his Cloth to use this attack against Rhadamanthys in episode 13 of the first Hades OVA so this rule may not be absolute). This attack can become one of the most powerful if left unchecked, trapping the victim at the center of the storm. The intensity of the attack can be increased indefinitely. However, due to Shun's pacifist attitude, he is very unwilling to use this technique.
In the 12 House battle, Shun and Hyoga get split up from Seiya and Shiryu in the Gemini house and he has to fight the mysterious Gemini Gold Saint. By using his attack chain to locate the person controlling the empty armor, he discovers the chain brings back a rosary that belong to Pope Ares.
Later on in the battle against Virgo Shaka, Shun watches Ikki and Shaka disappear in a beam of light leaving the Virgo Gold Cloth behind. Shun decides to become a stronger fighter to commemorate Ikki's sacrifice. When Shun, Seiya and Shiryu get to the Libra house, they discover Hyoga is trapped in an ice coffin that can't be broken with any attack. Shiryu manages to destroy the coffin with the Libra cloth spear. Hyoga is barely alive and Shun decides to use his own cosmo to revive him.
After that he falls unconscious but wakes up again when the group enters the Sagittarius house. Shun later on faces Pisces Aphrodite where he uses his Andromeda Nebula to defeat him, but nearly loses his own life when he's attacked with the Bloody Rose. In the manga, he is saved from the Bloody Rose later on by ikki, but in the anime it's Athena herself who came to heal him.
Later on in the Hades arc, Shun is haunted by a strange dream of seeing a strange girl (later on revealed to be Pandora) who gives him a necklace he once believed to be a gift from his parents.

He decides to go to the Sanctuary not knowing that he will get involved in the new Holy War. He tags along the other Bronze Saints to the top of the Sanctuary where Shion uses Athena's blood to turn the Athena statue into a miniature form of the Athena cloth. Shion uses Athena's blood to revive Shun's severely damaged Cloth which becomes far more powerful than ever.

Upon arriving to the Castle that's the door to Hades, he saves Aiolia's life with his chain who was falling down the entrance to Hades. However, this proved to be futile since Aiolia, Milo and Mu order everyone to leave them to fight Rhadamanthys alone and are defeated.
Shun encounters Pandora face to face for the first time and for a moment it seems like both of them already met before. However, Pandora keeps on climbing down the stairs to Hades and Shun is distracted with Rhadamanthys who wishes to fight everyone.
After Seiya pulls Rhadamanthys into the entrance of Hades; Shun, Hyoga and Shiryu are left behind. Libra Dohko arrives and tells them they must learn Arayashiki if they want to enter Hades alive. Shun successfully learns it and arrives into the entrance of Hades alive, but completely alone.
Shun finds Seiya on the ground (Rhadamanthys has somehow disappeared) and both of them enter the Charon boat to cross the Styx river. In exchange for payment to cross the river, Shun gives Charon his necklace. However, Charon throws Seiya off the boat because he didn't pay him anything.
Shun helps Seiya get back on the boat in exchange for his own life. Charon feels so guilty of Shun's acts (claiming Shun is the first person with pure eyes he has ever encountered) that he decides to take both of them to the other side for free in exchange for a battle. Shun recovers his necklace and Seiya defeats Charon.
Later on Shun and Seiya enter a building where Balrog Lune has replaced Minos as the judge of the dead. Lune doesn't find their names on the book of the dead and notices neither one of them have died yet. However, Lune sees both Seiya and Shun have killed people before and has decided to send Seiya to the 6th Hell, First Valley. Shun uses his chain and saves Seiya but Lune wraps his body with his whip and slices his body to pieces.
Lune feels great remorse for killing Shun because he knew Shun was a good person. He also felt disturbed that Shun looked physically identical to Hades. When he turns to leave, a spirit rises out of his shattered cloth and yells at him fore destroying his body. Lune then runs off screaming to find the remaining pieces of Hades. Later on, it's shown that Lune didn't kill Shun, but that Gemini Kanon created a hallucination that tricked Lune. (He's also blown to pieces after Kanon destroys his whip.)
Shun and Seiya arrive to a beautiful valley filled with flowers where the statue of a beautiful woman named Euridice is. She notices both of them are Athena saints and asks them to save her fianceé Orphée, the Lyra Silver Saint. Both of them encounter a specter named Pharao who confesses he once created a false light that caused Euridice to remain in Hades. Orphée defeats Pharao and says he will help Seiya and Shun to get to Hades.
Orphée meets with Pandora and gives her a coffin filled with flowers for Hades. Pandora isn't sure if this is a trap and so stabs the coffin several times with her spear, injuring Shun's arm. Rhadamanthys discovers Orpheus's trap and kills him. Pandora discovers that there is something strange with Shun and discovers that Shun is the reincarnation of Hades.
She admits she is the one that gave to Shun his necklace as a sign that he will forever be tied to Hades. Shun becomes fully possessed by Hades and his hair turns black and red-maroon. Seiya is defeated and sent to the Coocytos by Rhadamanthys.
Shun (now completely turned into Hades and wearing a cloak and the necklace) orders the specters to kill the Saints. Pandora bandages the wound on his arm and asks forgiveness for stabbing him while he was in the box Orphée smuggled him in.
The scene cuts to Ikki and Kanon who are facing off with the three most powerful specters: Rhadamanthys, Aiacos and Minos. In the middle of the battle, Ikki begins glowing purple and vanishes, only to reappear in front of Hades and Pandora who had summoned him. First, his memory is restored and he remembers how Pandora had tried to kidnap Shun. However, she is thwarted by a strange cosmo and leaves, but not before giving Shun the pendant that marks him as Hades. Ikki then snaps the necklace off of Hades' neck and crushes it. He rushes toward Shun/Hades, but is pushed back by Pandora and her spear's electricity. Eventually, he uses the Hōyoku Tenshō and almost demolishes the temple. He seizes Pandora's spear and sticks it into the wall next to her. Then, he runs up to Hades and slaps him over and over, telling Shun to wake up. Hades opens his eyes and Ikki is thrown backwards into the wall. Hades explains about the "Great Eclipse" and how everyone is doomed. Right before he is about to kill Ikki, though, Shun's spirit takes over Hades' right hand and begins strangling himself. Shun's image appears before Ikki and tells him to kill him. Ikki, however, is unable to kill his own brother and is defeated.


Then, Athena and Virgo Shaka both appear to face off with Hades. Athena tries to free Shun, but all her efforts are futile. Shaka tries to free Shun, but only injures his body. Shun finally manages to free himself from Hades, but can do nothing when Hades takes Athena into Elysium.
Shun afterwards manages to enter Elysium thanks to the Gold Saints and to his Cloth which is protected by the blood of a goddess. He later on fights Thanatos wearing the Virgo cloth until it is destroyed.

A renegade, Ikki is by nature a lone wolf; he is cocky, prone to violence, unpredictable and explosively powerful. Scarred by his training in Death Queen Island in the South Pacific Ocean under Guilty (a former Saint of an unknown constellation who was banned and exiled on the island), a place and regimen aptly described as "Hell on Earth". He initially returned to Japan to take revenge on the Kido foundation for sending him there, and on his brother whose place he voluntarily took. Recruiting the help of the Black Saints, he stole parts of the Gold Cloth of Sagittarius but was eventually foiled. With time he joins the other Saints in their struggle against the Sanctuary and in their subsequent fights, but he generally goes his own way until he feels it is time to act, or when his brother, Shun is in danger. He is almost certainly the strongest Bronze Saint and his cloth has the ability to regenerate, like the Phoenix rising from the ashes.
Even tough he has a small participation at the beginning of the hades arc for he decides he doesn't want to fight, he enters Hades by his own means to try to save his brother Shun who is possessed by Hades.
Ikki fights and defeats Minos with Gemini Kanon's help. Ikki later on forms a special relationship with Pandora who gives him her necklace which allows him to enter Elysion safely even though his cloth isn't protected with Athena's blood.
His cloth is later on damaged in the battle against Thanatos but it's completely restored when he touches the jar that retains Athena's body which splashes Athena's blood onto his Cloth. In the battle against Thanatos he wears the Leo Gold Cloth until it's destroyed.

Black Saints (Ankoku Saints in the anime)

His version of Black Ryusei-ken (meteor punch) causes poison in Seiya's body with burning black marks that spreads all over Seiya's body. Over time, Seiya was later saved by Shiryu by drawing out the black blood from the 13 pegasus star points on his body.

The strongest of the 4 black saints. Before Black Dragon's death by Shiryu's defeat, he was finally convinced to believe in "Friendship" that Shiryu kept telling him about and stopped Shiryu's bleeding before he died.

Silver Saints

The Saints wearing the second most powerfull Cloths are the Silver Saints. The Specialists in Battle. When they receive an assignment of the Sanctuary, they go to any part of the world to fulfill it whatever the cost, using all their power. They represent the true concept of a Saint of Athena, those are the Silver Saints.

Another mission given by the Sanctuary for the Silver Saints is the one to take care of the Cloths that does not have owners. It is not rare to see Silver Saints training potential candidates to one of these Cloths. To find a successor worthy of its Cloth is part of the work of these Saints. As many Saints and Cloths were lost in the last Holy War, to train new Saints and to increase to the power do fight are the important tasks to be fulfilled before the next Holy War.

Daidalos is the master of both Chameleon June and Andromeda Shun on Andromeda Island. After Shun earned his cloth by surviving the tide water, Daidaros recognized Shun as a real saint and that his cosmo was rather powerful and frightening. When he heard about Shun going against the Sanctuary, he agreed with him and therefore the sanctuary sent Pisces Aphrodite to kill Daidalos. It was an easy match for Aphrodite but Daidalos fought until his last breath believing in Shun.
In the anime, Shun's teacher was killed by both Scorpio Milo and Piscis Aphrodite. He is shown as a much more powerful Saint, equal to Gold Saints, and dies after being paralyzed by a sneak attack from Piscis.

However, this was later revealed to be false. Marin is the only female Saint that wears a mask and never completely shows her real face in the anime or the manga. She is a good friend of Aiolia and a seeming comrade of Shaina in battle as given that Shaina helps Marin rescue Seiya in the 12 Houses battle.
Marin disappears for a large part of the Sanctuary arc, for she went on a quest to find out the truth about Pope Ares. She climbs up the blidd of "Star Hill" which is off limits to all Saints. At the top, she finds a dead body that was still in perfect condition albeit being dead for over 10 years. It is later on revealed that this body is the true Pope: Aries Shion.
She aids the Bronze Saints in the Asgard battle when she fights Alberich. However, she is defeated and trapped in a coffin. Her body is freed when Alberich is killed. She confesses to Shaina that when she talked to a recovering Aldebaran, she was told that the Asgard God Warrior that attacked Aldebaran has a twin brother. Marin is not present during the Poseidon battle and most of the Hades battle because she was out on a quest to find Seiya's sister Seika.

Started off on the opposite side of Seiya during the first fight with him, Seiya was able to break her mask and saw her face. Later, after trying to assassin Seiya in the hospital, Shaina told Seiya that it's a shameful thing to have a female saint's face viewed by a man and the there's only two choices as the result: either to kill the male or to love him.
Part of her hatred against Seiya was also because Seiya got the Pegasus Cloth instead of her pupil Cassios. Throughout the series, Shaina develops a strong affection toward Seiya.
Shaina decides to help Seiya when she finds out that her pupil Cassios was killed in her place to save Aiolia. She has helped the Bronze Saints in the 12 Houses battle, Asgard and Poseidon. She guards the outer limits of the Sanctuary in the Hades battle and is the one who orders the cemetery to be burned in case other dead Saints are revived to serve Hades.

Ptolemy is a saint that follows the orders he is given. When the four bronze saints arrive at the sanctuary he is there to greet them in disguise. But as soon as they come into the vicinity of the Aries temple he reveals himself and attacks them with a shower of phantom arrows.
However, the bronze saints realize they are all illusions and easily defeat him. There is yet only one golden real arrow that he shot, which hits Saori right in the chest. Before he dies, he tells them they must reach Pope Ares in less than 12 Houses so that he can remove the arrow before it pierces Saori's heart.

He was one of the two survivors of the last Holy War against Hades. Little is known about the time where he ruled as the Pope of the Sanctuary, but he was killed by Gemini Saga who then impersonated him. Shion, however, came back to life as a specter of Hades.
Shion first paralyzes Mu and allows Saga, Camus and Shura to enter the 12 Houses. Shion later confronts Dohko who becomes young again and the two face off destroying the Aries house in a huge explosion of their cosmos.
Shion appears again apparently unharmed when the Bronze Saints arrive to the place where Athena died. The Bronze Saints attack him thinking he was a traitor, but he confesses everything was a scam to avoid Hades from killing them before the revived Saints could finish their mission.
Shion's true mission was to reach the Athena statue which is really her Cloth. He revives the Cloth with Athena's blood which turns into a miniature statue. Shion also manages to restore the damaged Bronze Cloths of Seiya, Shun, Hyoga and Shiryu with Athena's blood, granting their Cloths with special protection from the barrier field that leads to the entrance to Hades.
After finishing his mission successfully, Shion awaits at the Sanctuary along with Libra Dohko for his imminent death at sunrise.
Shion uses more powerful versions of Mu's attacks, due to him being the one to have trained Mu. He was a good friend of Libra Dohko, the other survivor of the last Holy War. While not proven, it's highly probable Shion can also repair cloths and he taught his abilities to Mu.
Shion has an important role in the Lost Canvas and Next Dimension manga.

Mu is very soft spoken, and possesses a scholarly-like personality. His demeanour is very tranquil and logical, almost as if he is a professor of the sanctuary. Mandarin-speaking Saint Seiya fans usually call him 'Mu xiansheng', or 'Mister Mu'. Mu; is an artisan in the Sanctuary who is the only person possessing the ability to repair Saints' Cloths. Mu has the strongest telekinetic abilities (psychokinesis, teleportation etc) of all Saints, and he can teleport from one location to another. However, he can only teleport short distances while in the Sanctuary for it has a strong energy field that conflicts with his powers.
Mu has a special facial feature which he shares with his master Shion and his pupil Kiki: they all have two round dots between their eyebrows. The origin of Mu was suspected to be the lost continent of Mu though this isn't official. During Saga's terror reign over the Sanctuary and Athena's exile, Mu resided in the mountain range of Jamir near Tibet. His attacks are similar to Shion, his master.
Although Mu appeared very early in the series, it was only by the Hades arc that his fighting abilities were seen. This was due to Mu's pacifist nature (commented by Shion).
Mu has an important role in the beginning of the Hades arc where after being released from Shion's telekinesis by Dohko, he goes out to help the remaining Gold Saints. Mu is unable to help Taurus Aldebaran and he doesn't allow anyone to save Virgo Shaka in respect to Shaka's own wishes.
On his way to the Cancer house, Mu is confronted by a group of true Hades specters and is forced to fight against Papillon Myu. The anime and manga greatly differ in how the battle is matched. In the anime, Mu uses Seiya to discover Myu's attacks to defeat him with Starlight Extinction. In the manga, Mu uses telekinectic abilities and throws pillars at Myu, and Seiya doesn't appear at all during the fight.
Later on, Mu shows no mercy against Saga, Camus and Shura when they return to the Virgo house after killing Shaka with the forbidden attack "Athena Exclamation". Mu (holding Shaka's rosary) teams up with Aioria and Milo to perform Athena Exclamation thus destroying the Virgo house.
Mu, Milo and Aioria are ordered by Athena to bring Saga, Shura and Camus to her unharmed. It's hinted that Mu suspected Athena's secret intention to kill herself. Mu, Milo and Aioria follow Saga, Shura and Camus to the entrance of Hades where Mu confronts Rhadamanthys, who then throws his body into the pit of Hell (which leads to the Hades, the Underworld).
He along with Milo and Aiolia are sent to the Cocytus until they all awaken to open the path to Elysion.

Named as the Golden Wild Ox (黄金の野牛). Aldebaran is the only Gold Saint taller than 200 centimeters. Although his sheer physical size may intimidate most of his opponents, he is considered to be kind and straight forward. During the confrontation between the Bronze Saints and the sanctuary, he saw the enthusiasm in Seiya, and their potential, and allowed them to pass through his temple. His friendship with Mū seems to be very close, who commented that he is the physically strongest Saint out of all the 88 Saints. His role in the Asgard/Poseidon arc was slightly different: in the manga-version he burst his own eardrums trying to overcome Sorento's flute sound, but it was ineffective. In the anime-version, Aldebaran was attacked and injured by Mizar Syd instead of Sorento (later Dubhe Siegfried was the one to fight Sorento, and similarly pierced his eardrums to defend Sorento's flute sound, and fails).
His best known fact was not his physical strength, but his eternal devotion toward Athena. During the Sanctuary arc, he allows Seiya and other Saints to pass his temple because he knew it was the only way to save Athena. In the Hades saga he is hero, killed by the spectre Deep Niobe but defeated by Taurus also. Even after his death, his Cloth and Cosmo continue to defend the Taurus temple against invaders, and alerted Mu of Deep Niobe's assassination. Finally, his Cloth and Cosmo join the other Gold Saint for one final attack to destroy the Wailing Wall to allow Seiya and others to enter Elysion and save Athena.

Originally first appeared as an enigma saint (謎の聖闘士). Saga has the ability to warp space with a technique is called "Another Dimension" and also have illusion techniques. Saga was affected by multiple personalities. The dark personality's ethical values and moralities are twisted beyond repair. Thus Saga was the culprit who caused chaos in the Sanctuary Chapter. He is also the most grievous victim of his own evil deeds. Saga claimed that Kanon was the one who lead him to the evil side.
Despite his feigned attack towards Athena in the Hades Chapter, the positive side of Saga was always loyal to his beloved goddess. Saga can strike the nervous system of his enemy, paralyzing the body of his opponent and finally gaining control over the enemy's mind. As the result of Saga's attack, his victim cannot regained his/her mental control unless he/she kills someone. This devastating technique is known as the "Demon Emperor Fist". His most devastating attack is the "Galaxian Explosion" which has the power of an exploding galaxy or many planets. He also used a technique similar to Shaka's Tenbu Horin to strip Seiya of his five senses.

Kanon is as powerful as his older brother Saga. Kanon was the one who caused Saga to turn into the 'dark side' as well as the one to have started the war between Athena and Poseidon, therefore until the beginning of Hades Chapter, the surviving saints were very hostile towards Kanon. Eventually Kanon abandoned his evil ways and pledged his allegiance to Athena. In the Hades Chapter, Kanon suited up in the Gemini armor and fought successfully against multiple Spectres. He uses similar attacks to those of Saga, including the Galaxian Explosion, but his version of Another Dimension is called "Golden Triangle" (used only as a marina, which Phoenix Bronze Saint Ikki comments is a weaker version of Another Dimension), but his attack of "Demon Emperor Fist" seems to be more powerful, using only a finger when battling the specters Lune and Rhadamanthys.

Death Mask's belief in absolute power transformed him into a villain of the sanctuary. This Gold Saint is completely evil and sadistic, as he feels extreme pleasure in killing and torturing his victims through eternal suffering even after their deaths. He was killed by Shiryu in the Sanctuary Chapter. Alongside with Pisces Aphrodite, he was resurrected by Hades in spectral form in order to take Athena's head to Hades, but they were both neutralized by Aries Mu and was sent back to Hell definitely by Rhadamanthys. In the manga Hades Chapter, Death Mask sacrificed himself, along with other 11 Gold Saints, in front of Wall of Sigh to allow Bronze Saints gain passage to Elysion. From certain perspective, Death Mask redeemed himself from the sins he committed. He's the only one who can go forth and back from the Tseih She Ke(Chinese name of the Beehive Cluster, read as Seki Shi Ki in Japanese) as will.
In the (largely considered uncanon) Saint Seiya Episode G manga, he is shown to be none less vile, hitting Aiolia's assistant Lithos when she defends her master, and pledging eternal loyalty to Saga because he shared the same philosophy with him.

Named the Golden Lion (黄金の獅子)Aiolia is head-strong and usually allows his impulsive nature to get the best of him, an opposite to the composed and reflexive attitude of Aries Mu. Besides Marin, Seiya considered Aiolia to be his mentor, close friend and a surrogate older brother. Therefore both of their combat techniques are similar.
In Megumu Okada's Saint Seiya Episode G, he is the protagonist, and it is expressed how truly ashamed he was to be Aiolos' brother, dying his hair red, and constantly training to surpass him. Also, he holds a grudge against most of the Gold Saints as well the Master of Sanctuary (who, at the time, was Saga disguised), as he often engages in fights with them (such as when Deathmask hit Lithos), and disobeying the Pope's commands. Also, it is shown that even though he resented his brother and suffered every day because of him, he still loved him very much. One example of this is his battle with the Titan Ceos. In there, he sees his brother's spirit, who offers him words of comfort and encouragement.
He then remembered a day of training with his brother. He was arguing with his brother over a new attack, he, Aiolia, had developed. Aiolos said that while his attack was insanely powerful, it also drained most of his cosmos and left him nearly dead. Aiolos then told him that he should "seal" the attack, and to only ever use it again to protect Athena, or his loved ones.
Aiolia then snaps out of it, and unleashes the attack, "Photon Burst", which defeats Ceos, and would have destroyed him, if another Titan had not saved him. Aiolia dedicates the attack to his brother, saying that he created it to protect him.
Aiolia holds his loved ones very close to his heart, more specifically his servants Lithos and Garan, considering them his family. In fact, Garan on instance says the whole reason Aiolia got stronger was not just because of himself, but because of his desire to protect everyone and everything dear to him.
Aiolia's technique "Lightning Plasma" is him using Cosmo-charged punches, which travel at the speed of light. If enemies are within 3 meters of his presence, the technique allows Aiolia to hit his opponent 100 million rounds per second. In the Saint Seiya Encyclopedia is stated the Lighting Plasma is basically a Lighting Speed Pegasus Ryūseiken.
His other technique is "Lightning Bolt", where Aiolia punches the air at extremely fast speeds to crack the atmosphere and create a vacuum, then fires an highly charged electric orb through it.

The most powerful Gold Saints, Shaka is thought to be the reincarnation of Siddhartha, or the Buddha, and is known as 'the man closest to God'. This is certainly reflected in his volatile temperament and often totalistic reasoning (though ironic because the Buddha is considered pacifist and contemplatively gentle). In order to hold back his extremely powerful cosmos, Shaka's eyes are normally shut. However, if calamity befalls should Shaka opens his eyes -- the precursor to his ultimate attack, 'Tenbu Horin,' which not only traps and defangs Shaka's victims, but also wipes out their five senses (sight, hearing, touch, smell and taste). Essentially reduces Shaka's victims to living corpses. His skill and power is demonstrated in the Hades Chapter, where he single handedly, yet not easily, repelled three powerful fallen Gold Saints (namely Saga, Camus and Shura), before he was slain by their Athena's Exclamation, which he'd planned to be. Shaka is also the first Saint to master the Eighth Sense - Arayashiki (阿頼耶識), which allows one to move freely within Hades' realm even after death.

His Cloth also carries six pairs of weapons. They are tonfars, nunchakus, spears, swords, triple rods and shields, totaling in all twelve. Dohko's pupil Shiryu calls him 'Roshi'(老師). 'Roshi' in Japanese means 'teacher,' and he is referred to by this name from all Saints as a sign of respect (even though his only true student is Shiryu). Dohko in his dormant form resembles a tiny old man (similar to Yoda of Star Wars) who has purple skin and white beard. Dohko can transform into a young 18 year-old version of himself with the average height and weight of a man in his prime because of 'Misopethamenos'. It is a gift from Athena which allows his heart to beat at the rate of 100,000 times per year (namely, the number of times a normal human heart beats per day). Therefore, this technique allows Dohko to age at an extremely slow rate compared to other human beings (243 years to him was equivalent to 243 days). Similar to Mu, Dohko took refuge in the Five Ancient Peaks of Lushan(Mount Ro or Rozan in Japanese) in China. The purpose was to watch over the mountain peak where Athena imprisoned the spirits of Hades' 108 Spectres. His attack unleashes the power of 100 dragons ("Lushan Hyaku Ryū Ha"). He is arguably the most experienced and wisest of the Saints. He tells the bronze saint about the Eighth Sense. He is equal in skill and ability as Shion, as said in both the anime and the manga.
Note: Although Dohko is the Gold Saint of Libra, and uses dragon attacks, his totem symbol, seen when he powers his cosmo to the max, is actually a tiger. In contrast with Shiryu, he also has a tiger tattoo on his back.

In the Lost Canvas, Dohko was the first saint to encounter the power of the previous pegasus saint, Tenma. It was Dohko who helped harness Tenma's powers and taught him about cosmos.

Milo's character is similar to that of Aiolia, except that he is more cold-minded. Milo's attacks are not very powerful, but extremely painful to his opponents. Similar to a scorpion sting, Milo usually takes his time to torture his enemies. There are a total of 15 Scarlet Needles, which represents the stars of the constellation Scorpio. Before the final needle to the heart, the Antares, Milo will give the opponent an opportunity to surrender.
In Hades, Milo stays with Saori and strikes many of his needles at Kanon, refusing to believe he was worth of trust. However, before attacking with his Antares Needle, Milo recognizes Kanon's intentions and leaves Saori alone with the new Gemini Saint, now considered a friend. Along with Aiolia and Mu, Milo is defeated by Radamanthys, while weakened by Hades' Barrier. Later on, Milo takes part in the destruction of the Wailing Wall.

Aiolos died very young. His courage to stand up to the entire sanctuary and escape with the infant Athena proved his bravery. Aiolos was selected by Shion as the next Pope of the sanctuary; However, due to Saga's secret overthrown and pose as the Pope, Aiolos was branded a traitor and eventually hunted down and killed by Capricornus Shura but manage to lived long enough to encounter Mitsumasa Kido and give the infant Athena to him which Kido take the baby and the Sagittarius cloth back to Japan. As a spirit, he helps the Bronze Saints, especially Seiya, in defeating their enemies many times and lending Seiya his Sagittarius armor as well through out the series. Aiolos's technique 'Atomic Thunder Bolt' has similar form as Aiolia's 'Lightning Bolt' (a thunder sphere).
Before his flee from the sanctuary, he made a stop by his temple to pick up his Sagittarius Cloth. Before his journey toward Japan with infant Athena, he carved his will behind a tile in his temple.
The will proves to be the most inspirational speech of the entire Sanctuary arc. After Seiya and the rest of Athena’s Saints read his will, they felt Aiolos’ sense of justice and his greatness, the Saints regenerated completely from the fatigue of previous battles.
In Saint Seiya Episode G, he is a constant figure of support for his brother, despite his brother's resentment of him, with his spirit constantly appearing and helping Aiolia to overcome his challenges. In that manga he has also a powerful move called Infinity Break, similar to Coeus's own Sparkle Rapier.

Shura considered himself to be the saint most loyal to Athena (Note: In the manga, he was actually loyal to the evil Pope of the Sanctuary). For this, when Aiolos basically abducted Athena as a baby (to save her from her own assassination), Shura was among those sent to hunt down and kill Aiolos. The irony in this is that had he succeeded at bringing Athena back to Sanctuary, she would have been killed. Shiryū makes him realize that. His most powerful attack is "Excalibur"(also called Seiken Battō, "Holy Sword Drawn"), which is a fist with the sharpness of a sword. In Greek Mythology, his loyalty to Athena caused Athena to grant him this power (Athena gave the warrior a holy sword 聖剣).
In the Episode G manga he's shown using Excalibur in complex moves like the Seiken Ranbu (Holy Sword Wild Dance), but they still are classified as Excalibur attacks. Later he gave the ability of Excalibur to Dragon Shiryu as he has proved his worthiness right after his own demise.

Camus's famous technique "Aurora Execution" can freeze anything to near absolute zero (0 kelvins).
Camus is said to be the "Magician of Ice and Water" (「氷と水の魔術師」). He is Cygnus Hyoga's teacher (and in the anime, master of the Crystal Saint who was Hyoga's master). He taught young Hyoga techniques such as "Diamond Dust" and "Koliso"(Russian for "Ring"). He can also create a 'Freezing Coffin' which is unbreakable even if all 12 Gold Saints were to unite their power. Camus sacrificed himself to teach Hyoga "Aurora Execution". Aurora Execution is said to be the strongest ice-based attack in existence, it can achieve the temperature of absolute zero although Camus never actually achieved it.

Pisces Saint is said to be the most beautiful Saint between heaven and earth out of all 88 of Athena's Saint (stated in Manga, 天と地のはざ間に輝きを誇る美の戦士).
Aphrodite guards the last house of the 12th gold saint temple just before the pope's room. And the road leading to the pope's room is filled with Royal Demon Rose which if anyone smells it, they will slowly lose their five senses and fall into a sweet aroma of death.
Pisces Aphrodite attacks with roses as weapon ("Royal Demon Rose (red)", "Piranha Rose (black)", "Bloody Rose (white)"). He also has teleportation abilities, first used in his battle with Shun in the Sanctuary Chapter and used it again in the Saint Seiya Crimson Youth movie when he fight with Shun once again. Just like Deathmask (and Shura in the manga), he knew the true identity of the Pope (Saga) but still chose to follow him. He is as evil (but not as cruel as he prefers to use a painless attack "Royal Demon Rose" against his enemies) as Deathmask, and also attacked the Andromeda Island along and killed Shun's master, Cepheus Daidalos (though in the Anime version, it's actually Scorpio Milo who was sent to attack Andromeda island). Knowing about these facts, the kind nature Andromeda Shun kept give Pisces Aphrodite a chance to repent but after Shun sees that Aphrodite have no intention to repent and decided to uses his final deadly attack "Bloody Rose", the normally docile Andromeda Shun was forced to counter with his final attack "Nebula Storm" and ended up killing him. Later he and Cancer Death Mask were spectrally revived by Hades to have Athena's head taken to Hades, but they were once again stopped by Aries Mu and sent back to Hell by Rhadamanthys.
This Gold Saint is named after Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of beauty and love.
Through out the Sanctuary Chapter and even the movie. Both Pisces Aphrodite and Cancer Deathmask were portrayed as hopeless evil Gold Saints. It wasn't until the Hades Chapter that they were given redemption when they were asked by Shion to pretend to follow Hades' order. (In the anime, after Shion asked all the dead Gold and Silver Saints to pretend to follow Hades' order, a shot showed Aphrodite and Deathmask smiling. Then, Shion thanked all of them for pretending to betray Athena)

Steel Saints (only in anime)

The Steel Saints' armors were created by Dr. Mamori (supported on the beginning by Mitsumasa Kido). Unlike the other Saints, the Steel Saints' powers come from their robotic armors and not from the cosmos. They only appear on the Silver Saint Arc, and before the Bronze saints travel to the Sanctuary in Greece.

Character created by the anime script writers. He was supposed to kill Seiya and Kiki after they go searching for a cure for Shiryu's blindness, but Seiya defeats him.
Disciple of the Gold Saint Shaka..
Character created by the anime script writers. He and his partner Shiva were disciples of Virgo Shaka, who sent them to kill Ikki as he was healing himself in a volcano before joining the Bronze Saints in the Sanctuary. They attempt to kill a girl named Helen to lure Ikki into a trap, but Ikki ultimately saves Helen and kills them.

Nicole is considered very clever in Sanctuary, in particular he has a vast knowledge about astronomy. But the power causes the rest of him to turn into stone and accidentally blows the top part of. But later he joins his cosmo with Retsus and with his last remains of his soul they defeat the gorgon.

Though it is disturbed by the news of Natassia being frozen in ice as she prayed. Hyoga saves Natassia and the story ends with Hyoga walking away, while Alexer holding Natassia in his arms.

Foster grandfather of Saori, who adopted her and took her to Japan after finding a dying Sagittarius Aiolos in Sanctuary. In the manga, it was revealed that he was actually the birth father of all the orphans he sent around the world to be trained as Saints. In the anime, he merely took the children from various orphanages (sometimes even kidnapping them, as shown in Seiya's case), and sent them for their training. In order to hide the Sagittarius cloth from Sanctuary, he had people put additional work on it to mask the original shape of the Sagittarius cloth. Just before he die, he told Saori everything regarding the encounter with Aiolos in Sanctuary.

He starts as a rather flat and downright abusive retairner for the future Saints, later develops as a man who was honor-bound to preotect Saori, and ultimately was the series' comic relief.

  • Supposedly, the Saints represent the 88 constellations, yet according to the official number of Saints given (12 Gold Saints, 24 Silver Saints and 48 Bronze Saints), there are still four unaccounted Saints. However, three Silver Saints and over thirty Bronze Saints never make an appearance.
  • The manga Episode G suggests that the four unaccounted Saints could belong to the Bronze Saints. Due Episode G's unknown status as Canon, this information may be unreliable.
  • In the Mythological Age, Cloth (or Cloths) evolved in God Cloth(s). This was stated by Hypnos and Thanathos in the original manga.
  • In Gigantomachia one of the four missing saints was suggested to be, Mei who wears the Cloth of Berenice.
  • "You can only use an attack on a Saint once, afterwards it will have no effect." This is a famous quote from many Saints, referring to how after they've seen an attack once, they would know how to counter it, and subsequent uses of the same attack would prove to be ineffective.

Odin's Asgardians (anime only)

  • Polaris Hilda: A beautiful and powerful young woman who is Odin's representative on Earth and priestess of Asgard, she is possessed by the Nibelung Ring (controlled by Poseidon) after rejecting his influence, and sets her sights on world domination in the name of Odin. Her younger sister Freya contacts Saori and asks her and the Saints for help.
Saori quickly sets up a strategy: she will take Hilda's place temporally as the one who prays to avoid the melting of the Polar Ice, while the Bronze Knights fight Hilda's Guardians to reach her. She's finally liberated after fighting Seiya, who awakened the Odin God Robe and the legendary sword Balmung with all Odin Sapphires, and returns to her gentle self. It's also revealed that Poseidon locked her spirit away in the Nibelung Ring as her body was controlled by him, torrturing her psychologically since she could only watch her warriors die one by one.
She's apparently named after Brynhildr, the strongest of the Valkyrie in Norse mythology and one of the main characters in Richard Wagner's Tetralogy, as well as the hero Siegfried's love interest.

  • Freya: Younger sister of Polaris Hilda. After being the first person (aside from Alberich) who notices the drastic change in her sister, she seeks out help from Saori and her saints for help, freeing Hyoga from jail (he had been been sent as a scout and then captured) and joining him, therefore she's branded as a traitor by everyone. She was deeply saddened for the battle that she didn't not want to come to be between Merak Hagen and Cygnus Hyoga; Hyoga was her first friend (and possible love interest) among the Bronze Saints, but Hagen was her bodyguard and best friend since childhood.
She's named after Freya, the goddess of love and beauty in Norse mythology.

Asgard God Warriors

Techniques: Odin Sword, Dragon Bravest Blizzard
He is said to be the strongest warrior among the God Warriors and the second in command after Hilda. He is very loyal to Hilda and at times seem to have a crush on her. In the beginning, he does not believe the Saints when they tell him that Hilda is being controlled by the Niebelungen Ring. However, after Poseidon's Sea General Siren Sorrento came out and told the truth, he switched sides and sacrificed himself to kill Siren Sorrento (although Sorrento was thought to have died, he actually survived and returns to Poseidon). His armor resembles the dragon Fafner. He is commented to be "invulnerable", just like the Norse legendary hero Siegfried, this fact maybe the reason why he is considered the strongest God Warrior.
Named after the Norse legendary hero Siegfried, central character in the opera Siegfried.


Techniques: Universe Freezing, Great Ardent Pressure
Since he was a child, he lived in the Valhalla Palace training in the cold mountain peaks and some volcanic caves in Asgard with the purpose of protect Hilda and Freya. Jealous of Hyoga's relationship with Freya, Hagen fought against him but was defeated when Hyoga increased his cosmo. His armor resembles Sleipnir the eight-legged horse owned by Odin
Named after Hagen, the traitor who killed Siegfried.

Thor was a poor Asgard villager, until he was severely damaged by the Valhalla Palace guardians when he tried to hunt near the Palace. Almost dying, he is healed by Odin's priest Hilda Polaris feeling by first time her pure and warm cosmo. Since then, he swore to protect her as her guardian . Despite noticing that Hilda's cosmo had changed, he fought against Athena's Saints hoping that she would return to being the kind person she once was. Finally, he asked Seiya to rescue Hilda after being defeated. His armor resembles Jörmungandr, the sea serpent, who faced the Norse god Thor at the Battle of Ragnarök.
Named after the Norse god of thunder, Thor.


Techniques: Amethyst Shield, Nature Unity, Honoo no Ken ("Flaming Sword").
Descendant of an important family of warriors and wise people in Asgard, Alberich was famous by his intelligence and cleverness. He was the only witness of the Hilda's possession by Poseidon's Nibelung ring. Taking advantage of this war, he planned to conquer the world. He defeated many of the Athena's Saints (including Marin). However, Shiryu with the help of his master Dohko finally defeated him. He was one of the most coward Saints as he could do the nature fight for him and used his intelligence to avoid fighting.
Named after the Norse mythical king Alberich of the dwarves, a sorcerer who guards the treasure of the Nibelung.


Techniques: Wolf Cruelty Claw, Northern Gunrō Ken ("Northern Wolf Pack Fist")
Fenrir was a member of one of the most powerful and rich families in Asgard. One day when he and his family went hunting, they were attacked by a bear. Helped by wolves and abandoned by humans, he started to live with wolves adopting their life style. Later, he was chosen by Hilda as the Epsilon God Warrior. He died fighting against Shiryu when an avalanche fell over him and his wolves.
Named after the Norse mythical wolf Fenrir, who will swallow Odin during Ragnarok. His armor also resembles the wolf


  • Syd (God Warrior of Mizar (ζ, Zeta))
Techniques: Viking Tiger Claw, Blue Impulse
He was the first God Warrior to appear in the Asgard chapter. He was sent to the Sanctuary to 'declare' war against Athena. He defeated Taurus Aldebaran with one blow (it was later revealed that a hidden force helped him). Then he went in Japan to kill Athena, he was stopped by Seiya and Shun, and he returned to his country waiting for the Saints to come and fight there. He was defeated by Shun's Nebula Storm in the Valhalla palace. Before his death, it was revealed he always knew about his twin brother, Alcor Zeta Bud.
His armor had the appearance of a green saber-toothed tiger, an animal that doesn't belong to the Norse mythology
  • Bud (God Warrior of Alcor (ζ, Zeta))
Techniques: Shadow Viking Tiger Claw
Syd and Bud are twins who were born into a very wealthy family in Asgard. Due to local superstitions that twins bring bad luck to the family, Bud was abandoned by his parents. A poor man raised him as his own child, until one day, during hunting, Bud encountered his twin brother Syd and the parents who abandoned him. Hilda made him a shadow God Warrior, in which he'll replace Syd (if he dies) as the real God Warrior. He had hatred against Syd and yet after much convincing from Ikki, he realized that all his actions (helping Syd to defeat Aldebaran, and later Shun when Syd was losing the battle) was due to the fact that he loved his brother very much. He then carried Syd's body into the blizzard, where Bud presumably died, with the wish that he and Syd could again be brothers should they be re-incarnated.


Techniques: Stringer Requiem, Kōsokuken ("Lightspeed Fist")
Mime grow up with his father Folker, a powerful warrior who trained him. One day, Mime discovered that Folker had cruelly killed his true parents. Guided by a strong feeling of fury, he killed Folker. After defeating Shun, who was disabled of using his chains, he fought against Ikki. At the end of this battle, he discovered (by being attacked with the Phoenix Hōō Genma Ken) that Folker was a good man who killed Mime's parents by mistake. His famous last words to Ikki were that he wished that in a new life they could both be reborn and be friends.
Named after the Nibelung Dwarf Mime, brother of the dwarven king Alberich, who trains and takes care of Siegfried
Mime (pronounce Mimay) has a similar attack style as Lyra Orphée, who is one of the most powerful Silver Saint under Saori Athena's banner.

Thus, when Poseidon awakens within the young man, and Athena having turned down his proposition, both sides of his personality have cause to wish his rival no good. Having known each other socially, Julian and Saori are somewhat shocked when they discover each other's "secret" identities.
In Greek mythology Poseidon was one of the most important gods, and was full brother to Zeus and thus Athena's uncle.

In the manga, it's suggested she's a dead fish found by Julian on the beach, a fish Julian helped years before.
Mermaids are mythological creatures who are half woman and half fish. The fact that she is from Denmark is a reference on Hans Christian Andersen's The Little Mermaid,a Danish fairy tale about a mermaid.

From the waist up she remained a beautiful girl, but the lower part of her body was turned into six ravening beasts (wolf, queen bee, eagle, bat, snake and bear).
Named after one of the lovers of Zeus, a daughter of a river god who was turned into a cow and tormented by a gadfly by Hera until Io reached Egypt, where she was freed from her punishment and became a priestess of Isis.

Chrysaor, in Greek mythology, was born from the blood of Medusa when Perseus cut her head off. Some legends have him being Poseidon's son by Medusa. He himself fathered many monsters. Chrysaor appeared to be a handsome human man, and he was also known as the "chieftain of the golden spear", for the weapon he favored, reference to Krishna's mastery of his spear.

In mythology, the Lymnades were evil water demons, who looked like salamanders and hated humans. They had the ability to mimic the form and voice of anyone they chose to. Their favorite trick was to assume the shape of someone a passerby loved and when he or she got close enough, the demons pulled the humans into the water and drowned them.

Isaac is the training partner of Cygnus Hyoga, while he was training to get the Cygnus Bronze Cloth.
Isaac faces Hyoga is another case of Hyoga having to fight someone out of his past. Issac trained with Hyoga, with the Crystal Saint as their teacher (in anime, with Camus in manga). Knowing that Hyoga was going to "visit" her mother, Isaac feared that his friend would be taken away by a strong maritime current that passed around there. Isaac dived in and saved Hyoga by tossing Hyoga out of the current. Isaac was badly injured by a jagged piece of ice while under the ice, losing an eye in the process, and in the end he was out of energy to climb out and drafted into deep sea by the strong current. Hyoga thought he was dead, but the huge water ray had scooped him up and delivered the injured warrior to Poseidon's sanctuary. Isaac has since then served Poseidon. Hyoga must defeat his old friend to save Athena's life, and Isaac is honor bounded to stop him. The fact Isaac blames Hyoga for the loss of his eye makes the situation more difficult.
The Kraken is a type of huge sea monster, known for destroying ships at sea (Isaac commented on his admiration of a Kraken in childhood). Although Kraken is described as a huge octopus, Isaac's Scale actually looks like a ray.

Sorrento was the one sent to attack Aldebaran, and declare war on Sanctuary in the manga (this was done by Mizar Zeta Cid in the anime). In the anime, he was sent by Poseidon to give Hilda the revenge ring in Asgard.
In mythology, the Sirens were three sisters who were half bird and half women. They had lovely voices, with which they drew sailors and their ships to death upon the rocky shores of the island the sisters lived on.

  • Most of the 108 spectres are not actually named or characterized in any way in Saint Seiya series.
  • In Chinese classic of the "Outlaws of the marsh" or "Water Margin" talks about 108 warriors exiled into the marsh land due to the corruption of the government during Song dynasty (12th century) and their battles. Each of the 108 warriors have their own nick names, 36 Heavenly Spirits and 72 Earthly Fiends makes up the 108 warriors.
  • In Greek myth, Rhadamanthys, Minos and Aiacos were the Judges of the Underworld, and all three have surplice based on a winged-creature.
  • Niobe was a proud queen with seven sons and daughters who boasted she was better than Leto, the mother of Apollo and Artemis, and was punished by having all her children shot down by Leto's children until she had one each. Because she would not stop crying, Zeus turned her to stone and placed on a high mountain where when snow melts, it runs down her face as though still crying.
  • Charon was a ferryman, who transports people across the river Acheron in hell (for a price), similar to the spectre Charon
  • Pharaoh is the title given to kings of ancient Egypt, and many aspects of Sphinx Pharaoh's design was based on Egyptian mythology
  • Shion (Aries), Death Mask (Cancer), Aphrodite (Pisces), Shura (Capricornus), Camus (Aquarius) and Saga (Gemini) were revived together with a black version of their gold cloths called Surplices, same material of that of the specters.

Saint Seiya Movies

Saint Seiya the Movie Evil Goddess Eris (First Movie)

  • Eris: Goddess of Chaos
Goddess of discord, Eris tempted Erii with a golden apple to possess her and uses her as a tool to start chaos in this world. As she caught Saori Kido (Athena) she placed a golden apple in front of Saori's chest to drain her power and life force till the point that she no longer need Erii's body and proceeds with her plan to take over the world.
In Greek mythology, when Eris was not invited to the wedding of Peleus and Thetis due to her trouble making nature, she tossed a golden apple on the ground in front of Hera, Athena and Aphrodite that inscribed "to the most beautiful goddess" which sparked a contest between the 3 goddess and eventually lead to Trojan War.
  • Erii (絵梨衣): A volunteer at the orphanage (where Seiya grow up) whom was tempted by the golden apple that Eris sent in order to use Erii's body to come to this world. Erii and Hyoga had a close connection when they first met.
Ghost Saints ("Ghost Five", appeared in the first movie only)

Christ died sometime before Athena was kidnapped, and is thus recognised by Hyoga in the purpose of Christ being the southern and Hyoga the northern cross. Feeling restless and tormented by his death as he lay in his grave, he put aside his saint title and joined Eris. Who revived him with a new body, but as he faces Cygnus Hyoga and gets an advantage over him. Christ is betrayed by Eris who sees this as a good opportunity and throws a spear from behind him and pierced right through his heart killing him and injuring Hyoga at the same time.

He has a similar personality as Pegasus Seiya, but he would fight to the death if it meant winning. He proves this when he faces Seiya, to first talk with him and then attack with all his strength. Unfortunately he is no match for Seiya, but one of the arrows from his attack Phantom Arrow Express makes it through Seiyas defense. As Seiya removes the arrow with ease he later tries to get Maya to tell where Saori is but leaves when he doesn't get a response. Maya says in his last breath that the arrow is actually poisonous, and only one is enough to remove your five senses.

Said to be one of the most powerful Silver Saints and served Athena with honor. But after he was killed he held a grief to being forgotten and the loneliness that comes with being dead. So he didn't hesitate Eris' offer and were soon revived with a new body to fight for the destruction of the world. Though as he faced Phoenix Ikki, he found this foes strength to be almost equal to his. Yet when Ikki explained the meaning of friendship the saints had, he hesitated for awhile but still continued to fight Ikki. Jaguar was interrupted when Pegasus Seiya obtained the Saggitarius Gold Cloth, and after having his strongest attack blocked by Seiya he was defeated by him. In his last words he confirmed that Seiya really was a true Saint.

Yan is an apparent saint that died in vain, this may well have been caused by his straight forward and jump into action personality. As he was restless in is grave he gladly accepted Eris' offer, and where soon revived given a new body. He faced of with Dragon Shiryu and to his advantage, the Scutum cloth has a stronger shield than the Dragon cloth. So in a mere minute he had defeated Shiryu, but by gravely underestimating the Dragon saint he was soon defeated as Shiryu unleashed all of his cosmo into one single attack, and were killed.
  • Orpheus (Ghost Saint of Lyra)

Techniques: Stringer Requiem
Seiyuu: Yuji Mitsuya (三ツ矢 雄二, みつや ゆうじ)
The legendary mythical person himself, as expressed by Andromeda Shun.
After his failure of bringing Eurydice back, he died with regrets. This led to that he gladly took Eris offer and got revived in a new body.
As he faced of Shun he seemed to be a calm and subtle person, but as the fight progressed he showed his evil side. After ensnaring and almost killing Shun with his Stringer Requiem, he was cut short with Phoenix Ikki's arrival.
Ikki used his Genma Ken to finish him, but since Orpheus already had suffered through hell hebrushed it of with ease. Wasting no time he attacked with his Stringer Requiem again, but this time Ikki unleashed his Ho o Yoku Tensho at him and he was killed.
Named after the Greek mythical musician Orpheus.

Heated battle of God (Second Movie)

  • Dorubar - He is at or above the level of Athena's Gold Saints. His primary attack is Odin's Shield. Seiya, in the Sagittarius Cloth, is barely able to defeat him.
Dorubar's God Warriors (appeared in the second movie only)

The second movie is Gods Heated Battle (神々の熱き戦い).

  • Loki - Is defeated by Seiya. His 2 Special Techniques are Shuugeki Gun Rou Ken (Wolves Attack), and Odin Tempest.
  • Uilr - He fights Shun, and gives Shun a beating until Ikki shows up to defeat him. Using a flaming sword, his Special Technique is Honou No Ken (Flaming Fist).
  • Runga - He is defeated by Ikki. His Special Technique is Mjollnir Hammer (he could be the basis for Thor from the Asgard TV arc).
  • Midgard (Hyoga) - A brainwashed Hyoga, he fights and is defeated by Shiryu. Even as Midgard, Hyoga uses the Aurora Thunder Attack.
  • Frey - Although he is a God Warrior, we do not see him in his armor, nor do we see him using a special attack. Also, he is not evil like the rest of the God Warriors. He sacrifices his life to save Athena and the world.
  • Freya - The sister of Frey, she is not a God Warrior.

The Legend of Crimson Youth (Third Movie)

  • Abel: The lost brother of Athena, he has come to take Athena with him and wants to "cleanse" the earth but he is eventually killed by Seiya using Sagittarius' Golden Arrow.
Many mistake Abel to be Apollo(being Athena's brother), the character is speculated as the unborn brother of Athena from Metis.
Corona Saints (appeared in the third movie only)

Third movie - The legend of crimson youth (真紅の少年伝説). The following are the Corona Saints under Abel.

  • Atlas (Corona Saint of Carina)
Technique: Burning Corona (バーニングコロナ )
One of the three Corona Saint of Abel, he has light green hair.
Technique: Golden Death Hair (ゴールデンデスヘアー )
One of the three Corona Saint of Abel, he has short blond hair and ability to control hair, he was defeated by Hyoga.
  • Jaō (Corona Saint of Lynx)
Technique: Shining Hell Claw (シャイニングヘルクロウ)
One of the three Corona Saint of Abel, he has reddish brown hair, died together with Gemini Saga when Saga sacrificed himself to help Seiya.

The Final Holy Battle (Fourth Movie)

  • Lucifer: The most evil of all evil, Satan himself in his true angelic form. He was defeated and cast out of heaven by the Archangel Michael. He appeared and killed off almost all of the Gold Saints with the help of his fallen angels, to try and take the blood of Athena so he may become the god of the whole universe.

Cherubim is the second highest in the upper level of angels.
  • Moa (モア) (Fallen Angel Throne)

Also named as "Beautiful Hunter of Souls" (美しき魂の狩人). Moa has beautiful appearance and uses illusion to attack.
Throne or Ophanim is the third highest in the upper level angels, as the carriers of the throne of God.
  • Eligor (エリゴル) (Fallen Angel Virtue)
Technique: (聖魔蟷螂拳 (Saint Demon Praying Mantis Fist, Seima Tōrō Ken)
Also named as "Golden Praying Mantis" (黄金の蟷螂). With sharp claws, he shredded Andromeda Shun's chain like paper.
Named after Eligor in demon related subjects.
Virtue is the second highest of the mid level angels.

Heaven Chapter Introduction~Overture~

The Olympian Gods are the main Gods in the Saint Seiya mythology. Their armors are called "Kamui", though they aren't used in the movie.

  • Apollo: Athena's older Brother, Apollo. Seen in the Heaven Saga. Apollo is the god of light, prophecy, music, and healing, not to be mistaken with Helios (god of the sun). One of the most powerful gods, he's said to have powers far beyond Athena's and Artemis'.

  • Artemis: older sister to Athena and younger to Apollo. Was the main villain in the Heaven Saga. She plans to destroy humans because they defy the gods. Artemis is goddess of the The Moon, wild and Hunting.

  • God: He is one of the gods that clearify the Gold Saint's Judgement, but he is not seen on screen. He could be Hephaestus, Hermes or Zeus.

  • Goddess: During the Gold Saint's judegement, there's a female goddess that can be heard. She could be either Hera, Demeter, Hestia or Aphrodite.

Angels

The Angels (written with the kanji 天闘士 meaning "Celestial Warriors") are the chosen warriors of the Olympian Gods. The name of their armors is "Glory". They are also some of most powerful foes Athena's Bronze Saints have ever faced. The cloths of Seiya, Shiryu, and Hyoga are all more or less destroyed in their respective battles against the Angels.

  • Icaros/Tōma (斗馬): The only human among the angels. He gives up his humanity to serve Artemis in order to be powerful like a god, and also turns out to be the long lost brother of Marin Eagle. However, by the end of the Heaven Saga movie, he sacrifices himself to protect Athena. Attacks with gold spears and electric charges. His finishing move is "Highest Altitude". He is supposed to have stats and attributes equal to Seiya, as they are the same size and share the same birthday.
    Seiyuu: Hikaru Midorikawa(緑川光), as a child: Fumiko Inoue(井上　富美子)
Based on Icaros, son of Daidalos; he flew too near the sun with wax-attached wings, then he fell into the sea and drowned.
  • Odysseus: Attacks with Energy Spheres. Absorbs energy attacks, can redirect or combine with his own power to make a reverse attack. He is defeated by both Hyōga and Shiryū. Much of the fight initially happens off-screen; Seiya, after regaining the Pegasus Cloth, stumbles upon Shun and Hyoga, both badly beaten by Odysseus, and their cloths smashed. Seiya then also takes a beating from Odysseus and has his cloth shattered as well. However, Shiryu and Hyoga are able to energize their Cosmos and finally (though just barely) kill Odysseus.
    Seiyuu: Hiroki Takahashi(緑川光)
Odysseus (Ulysses): King of Ithaca; husband of Penelope; wandered ten years after fall of Troy before arriving home.
  • Theseus: Uses wings to attack. Arguably the weakest of the 3 Angels, his finishing move is a Solar Beam. He tends to fly more than the other Angels, and is the first of the Angels to be defeated, by both Shun and Ikki. Although Ikki's attack is the one that finishes him off, Ikki would not have been able to achieve the victory without Shun's help.
    Seiyuu: Toshiyuki Morikawa(森川智之)
Named after Theseus, son of Aegeus; slew Minotaur; married and deserted Ariadne; later married Phaedra.

Trivia

  • Something worth noting is that the coloring between the original manga and the anime differs greatly. For example, Camus has red hair in the manga, while it is light blue/turquoise in the anime.
  • Saori Kido is one of the few characters in Saint Seiya whose full name is revealed, in addition to Tatsumi Tokumaru (Saori's butler) and Julian Solo (Poseidon's reincarnation). All other characters do not have a last name stated in the series. In the cases of the warriors, generally the name of their armor is used instead (for instance: Pegasus Seiya, Wyvern Radamantis, Lyra Orphee, Gemini Kanon.)
