At the core of the multi-billion dollar Pokémon media franchise of various electronic games, ongoing anime, several manga series, collectible cards and other media created by Satoshi Tajiri are 493 distinctive fictional species classified as the titular Pokémon. These creatures and entities reside throughout the various regions of the fictional Pokémon world and can be caught by humans designated as Pokémon Trainers, and Trainers use Pokémon for a variety of purposes, such as being pets and loyal companions and/or being pitted against other trained Pokémon in competitive Pokémon battles. Pokémon are potentially powerful and magical creatures that can employ a variety of talents such as generating fire or heat, martial arts, telekinesis, and so on, and through age and experience many species undergo a metamorphosis and transform into a similar but stronger specie in a process referred to as Pokémon evolution.
This is a selected listing of twenty of the Pokémon species, arranged as they are in the main game series' National Pokédex.
Kricketot
Kricketot (コロボーシ, Korobōshi?, Korobohshi in original Japanese language versions) has two large antennae function not only as feelers, but also as a musical instrument. In order to create sounds, it swings its head around, causing the feelers to collide and make a sound like a xylophone. Kricketot's design is based on a composer or conductor; its body resembles an orchestra conductor's costume.
Collars of the female are noticeably larger than those of the male.
Also, it should be noticed that the antenna of Kricketot appear to be a raised version of Kricketune's mustache.
Oddly, it is strikingly similar to Volbeat and Illumise, due to similar head collars, and that it has antennas. However, besides the fact that they are both bug types, they are not related in any way.
Kricketune
Kricketune (コロトック, Korotokku?, Korotok in original Japanese language versions) resembles a dark red cricket standing upright. Its forearms curve into scythe-like shapes (compare with Scyther), perhaps resembling conductor's batons. It also has two large whiskers resembling a handlebar mustache above the nose. The "mustache" on the female is slightly smaller than the male's.
Its appearance resembles a violin, or double bass, with string-like lines on its neck. Due to these traits, its design could have been influenced by the real life violin beetle. But with its scythes, or bows (for a violin), it could most likely be instrument-designed, like its pre-evolution, Kricketot.
Shinx
Luxio
Luxray
Budew
Nando owned a Budew that evolved in a battle against Ash's Pikachu.
Roserade
Cranidos
Rampardos
Shieldon
Bastiodon
Burmy
Burmy's name is derived from its inspiration, the bagworm. Like its real-life counterpart, Burmy produces a sticky substance that it uses to bind nearby debris to its worm-like body as protection and camouflage. This unique property causes it to change shape after a battle, although its type, stats, and moves are unchanged. After a battle in a natural setting, such as tall grass, it cloaks itself in leaves and twigs, giving itself a bush-like appearance. After a battle in a cave or desert, it surrounds itself in dust and pebbles, yielding a dust ball-like appearance. After a battle in a building, it envelops itself in a discarded plastic bag and bits of wire, appearing to be a pink puff with two arm-like wires. The different forms are known as 'cloaks'.
A Bug Maniac in Pokemon Diamond and Pearl will give the player a Macho Brace if the player shows him all three forms of Burmy in his party.
Wormadam
When a female Burmy evolves, its current 'cloak' dictates the appearance, stats, form, and moves of its evolved form, Wormadam. All three forms of Wormadam have unique type combinations, but inferior stats and moves.
A grass-cloaked Burmy will evolve into a Bug/Grass type, distinguishable by its collar of leaves and the flowered, wreath-like growth around its lower body. It has good Special Defense and decent Defense, but otherwise awful stats. It learns the powerful Grass-type move Leaf Storm and a number of Psychic moves, but oddly, no Bug-type moves. Its unique typing makes it extremely susceptible to Flying- and Fire-type moves.
An earth-cloaked Burmy will evolve into a Bug/Ground type with rock-like arms and an odd beard-like swath of yellow dust along its lower body. It has good Defense and decent Special Defense, but otherwise awful stats. It learns a number of Psychic moves and only a single Ground move, the one-hit finisher Fissure. It learns no Bug moves. Its unique typing grants it a full resistance to Electric moves and only a few weaknesses.
A garbage-cloaked Burmy will evolve into a Bug/Steel type entirely cloaked in a synthetic pink material. It has good Defense and Special Defense, but otherwise awful stats. It learns a number of strong Steel and Psychic moves, although its Iron Head attack's Flinch effect has limited use given Wormadam's terrible Speed. It learns no Bug moves. Its unique typing gives it a host of resistances and only a double weakness to Fire.
Mothim
Male Burmy evolve into Mothim
Combee
Combee are similar to Dugtrio and Magneton in that they are composed of three Pokemon fused together. Unlike the former, the single units that form Combee do not exist, and Combee can only be caught in its honeycomb-like triple form. Combee have the unique ability Honey Gather that collects the item Sweet Honey after a battle. Sweet Honey, when smeared on certain trees, attracts rare Pokemon including, ironically, Combee. Most Combee do not evolve and learn only two weak moves, but 1 in 8 Combee are female, able to evolve into the powerful Vespiquen.
Vespiquen
Vespiquen evolve from the rare female Combee at a low level. Vespiquen are highly intelligent, able to summon and command an entire hive of Combee, which it births through its honeycomb-like bottom, to do their bidding. While Vespiquen have only middling stats, they boast an impressive array of moves, including the unique Attack, Defend, and Heal Order, which command swarms of Combee to strike for, shield, or bring healing honey to their queen. A high-level Vespiquen is used by Elite Four Aaron.
Pachirisu
Buizel
Floatzel
Cherubi
Cherubi's name is derived from the Cherub, a form of angel associated with love and happiness, and the cherry. Cherubi are formed of a main unit coupled to a smaller unit. Similar to the endosperm of some plants, the smaller unit is composed of high-energy carbohydrates that provide nourishment to the main unit, and is nonessential to its well-being. According to the Pokedex, some Pokemon even hunt down and consume the smaller unit for its sweet taste. Luckily, the Cherubi can regenerate it with exposure to sunlight.
