Selwyn House School is a private independent boys' school located in Westmount, Quebec. Boys can attend from Kindergarten through to Grade 11. The school was founded in 1908 by Englishman Captain Algernon Lucas. It is named after Selwyn College, Cambridge University, which Lucas attended. Famous former students include Charles Bronfman, David Culver, Michael Meighen, Michael Pitfield, John McCallum , the electronic musician Tiga, Devon Soltendieck and several members of the Molson family including Hartland Molson.
The annual fees for attending Selwyn or SHS, range from $13,390 up to $17,280.
The School has recently gone under renovations, including a new building (Speirs), a laptop program (ACCESS), as well renovations to the dining hall and an underground gymnasium.
The Housing process is divided into four houses. Lucas House (yellow), Macaulay House (red), Speirs House (blue) and the Wanstall House (green).
The school was recently involved in a controversy in which former teachers at the school were accused of molesting students. Scandal hit the school in September 2005, when a former student launched a lawsuit claiming that he had been sexually abused by a former teacher, Leigh Seville, during the 1970s. Allegations regarding misconduct were first made in 1991, and the school administration confronted Seville. Soon after, he committed suicide and no further action on the issue was taken by the school administration. William Mitchell, current Headmaster, was headmaster in 1991 when the allegations against Seville first surfaced. Despite these allegations, Selwyn House remains among the top private schools in Quebec.
A similar scandal hit the school on February 3rd 2006.
