List of Bomberman series characters
Though usually light on story, there have been several recurring characters in the Bomberman series that often appear in the Story Mode of the various games or are characters made up by a fan of the Series.
Bomberman characters
White Bomberman
Although he is also referred to as "White Bomb", "White Bomber", "Shirobon", or most recently "Cheerful White", the hero of the series is usually simply called "Bomberman". In the standard games, he is the star and is always controlled by the player in the single player modes. He is portrayed as the heroic yet cheerful (and sometimes goofy) type, often saving his home planet from disaster. Like all Bombermen he has the ability to generate bombs in his hands. In the earlier titles he battles his rival, who was a black version of himself called "Kurobon", with whom he would later become friends and allies. In later games, such as Bomberman Max and Bomberman Tournament, he is shown to be part of an interplanetary police force stationed at Bomber Base. White Bomberman always tries to help and he means well.
The White Bomberman also made appearances in other games, such as Wario Blast, a Bomberman game featuring Nintendo mascot Mario's rival, Wario. He also appears in DreamMix TV World Fighters, a Hudson fighting game with characters from Hudson Soft, Konami and Takara.
Black Bomberman
Also known as "Kurobon" or most recently "Cool Black", Black Bomberman (AKA Black Bomb or Black Bomber) looks identical to Bomberman, only colored black and does not wear white tights. In many of his first appearances, he was shown to be the main rival to Bomberman. His activities have included robbing banks (Bomberman 2), kidnapping (PC Engine Bomberman) and disabling cities (Bomberman '93). However, with the Super Bomberman series on the SNES, he was changed to being a gradual friend of Bomberman (a sure sign is in Bomberman Hero as he is seen flying White Bomber's space ship). In many games since then he is controlled by the second player in the two-player story modes. Hudson has given him a cool and collected personality in the later games (most notably in Bomberman Land Touch!).
Blue Bomberman
Blue Bomberman has very little to no background at all, mainly because of a lack of publicity by Hudson on his character. In earlier Bomberman games, a player can play as him only in multiplayer modes. In Bomberman Land Touch! he is part of the three-man Gold Team, and is called "Kid Blue", the first time Hudson has given a corresponding name to a blue-schemed Bomberman. His name is his personality as with most other characters in aforementioned game; he has the same confidence as Cheerful White but is more vocal and honest about his feelings, and unlike the rest of the Gold Team and other rivals in the game, he does not taunt Cheerful White before a match.
The Five Dastardly Bombers
The Dastardly Bombers are a gang of recurring boss enemies in several games of the series.
Magnet Bomber
One of the Five Dastardly Bombers, Magnet Bomber's true personality has yet to be revealed as he is always the first of the group to be defeated. Magnet Bomber sports a scarf-like cape and has a magnet shape attached to his helmet that has the apparent ability of magnetism, shown in several images. "Magnet" refers to Magnet Bomber's bombs (and possible ability), which are attracted to Bomberman and can put him in sticky situations.
Golem Bomber
Golem Bomber is intriguing because his real name is somewhat disputed -- although he is sometimes referred to as Golem Bomber, he is also called Fire Bomber as well. This is probably just one of a few errors in the English Super Bomberman 2 manual, though. Also, his robotic features are more notable than in other bombers; this is most evident in his face (no eyes, just electricity crossing it), but can be seen in his limbs (the joints) and his finger joints too. Golem Bomber is the only member of the Five Dastardly Bombers who doesn't wear something around his neck. Golem Bomber's helmet has a flame emblem on the forehead. "Golem" refers to Golem Bomber's extreme strength (while Fire supposedly used to refer to the power of his bombs). Golem Bomber is also the largest of all the Five Dastardly Bombers (at about twice the height and 3 times the width compared to Magnet Bomber).
Pretty Bomber
A female bomber who is distinguished from her male counterparts by her pink skirt, yellow handkerchief/neckerchief, and the large yellow heart attached to her helmet. In her first appearance, Super Bomberman 2, she was an enemy and one of the Five Dastardly Bombers. She was resurrected in Super Bomberman 3 and was a playable character in the multiplayer mode (although different game sprites are used). She reprised her role as villainess in Bomberman Tournament. However, she has also been portrayed as a close friend to Bomberman in several games (apparently both White Bomber and Black Bomber are in love with her, probably because she's, as the name implies, pretty). In Super Bomberman 3 it was revealed that without her helmet she looks very much like a human girl, it is unknown if this is a characteristic of the Five Dastardly Bombers. She also differs from the others in the fact that she looks nothing like a robot (while the others display some parts that appear robotic). She has made a short cameo in the Bomberman Jetters anime.
On a side note, along with the other enemies in the game her name was mistranslated as "Ms. Flashy" in the Virtual Boy game "Panic Bomber." She also makes an appearance in the upcoming new Bomberman Land Touch! for DS as one of the main characters under the name Pretty Pink (Cute Pink in the U.S. version). Pretty Bomber is the only member of the 5 Dastardly Bombers to switch to the side of good in other games, despite the fact that Plasma Bomber tried to make peace with White Bomber at the end of Super Bomberman 2.
Brain Bomber
Brain Bomber is probably the most wicked Bomberman in the group, although Plasma Bomber was the leader at first. Brain Bomber somehow became leader of the Five Dastardly Bombers beforehand or through the duration of Bomberman Story/Bomberman Tournament, and it is unknown if he is going to stay in this position or not, as the team has yet to make another appearance. Brain Bomber wears a cloak and has the symbol of a crown on his helmet (similar to Golem Bomber's in some games), his arms and legs are not covered (like Pretty Bomber's and Kurobon's); he is shorter than the other characters and sometimes floats above the group. "Brain" refers to the fact that Brain Bomber is the engineer of the group, as shown in Super Bomberman 2 and Bomberman Story/Bomberman Tournament.
There is a connection between him and Max, but details are, so far, only suggested and up to interpretation.
Plasma Bomber
Plasma Bomber is normally the leader of the Five Dastardly Bombers, who are (to a lesser extent than that of Bagular, their supposed creator) Bomberman's arch enemies. Plasma Bomber seemed to want to make peace with Bomberman at the end of Super Bomberman 2 (by his gesture of alighting from his war machine and wanting to shake hands with Shirobon), but he was killed by a bolt emitted from his own war machine, within which had been hiding a strange alien monster. Afterwards, revived by Bagular, he seems to have forgotten or regretted this action. Plasma Bomber wears a handkerchief/neckerchief around his neck and has a lightning bolt attached to his helmet which seems to be able to create electric currents. "Plasma" refers to the fourth state of matter, plasma.
Crush Bombers
The Crush Bombers are bosses in Bomberman Generation.
Megaton Bomber
A huge bomber who is the strength of the Crush Bombers, his signature weapon is a flail. The ball is held by a claw at the end of his arm and the chain is fed through the palm of his hand. His signature move is the "Megaton Crush," where he pounds the ground, sending shockwaves through the arena.
Beauty Bomber
Another Pretty Bomber who gloats about her looks and uses three light show/real lasers to attack and defend, she is the symbol of love and beauty of the Crush Bombers. She believed herself so beautiful that Bomberman had to bow to her.
Eagle Bomber
Eagle Bomber, the self proclaimed "Prince of the Wind", is the speed of the Crush Bombers. He uses his own body as a preferred weapon, or more accurately, "the wings of white silver" he has mounted on his back. Dashing around the area, carpet-bombing the arena, and a piledriver move are the techniques he uses against Bomberman.
Assault Bomber
A huge bomber who is loaded with weapons and is the firepower of the Crush Bombers. Assault Bomber is more of a mech than a "Bomber" as he attacks mainly using his machine gun mounted on his arm. He can also separate his upper body from his lower body and hover around. He is also crazy, as he laughs maniacally throughout the whole entire fight.
Bomber Elite
The cape wearing leader of the Crush Bombers -- and as expected, the strongest. He has psychokinetic powers and can teleport. He also has more honor than the rest of the Crush Bombers, and seems to be the most playful, telling Bomberman he'll 'play' with him because he's bored. For the first part of the battle, he is toying with Bomberman, rather then taking him seriously. But once Bomberman proves himself worthy by getting Bomber Elite down to one heart, he gets serious and blast spheres of energy that grow as they rotate in the area. After being defeated, he extends his hand towards Bomberman, before telling him "I am happy... it was you... that defeated me..." The reason for this is unclear. But it saddens Bomberman, and even makes him cry. Unlike the other Crush Bombers, however, Bomber Elite does not explode after dying. He simply falls to the ground, and transforms into liquid-like sparkles that evaporate into the air. (It is theorized that he was truly good, and hated his life. Wanting someone to kill him. However, this theory has not been proven; and is very unlikely ever to be.)
He is sometimes mistaken to be a she, due to a feminine voice; however in cut-scenes, Dr. Ein clearly describes Bomber Elite as a male.
Elemental Bombers/Bomber Shitennou
This group of Four artificially created Bombermen are mid-world bosses in the Bomberman Jetters game.
Mermaid Bomber
The Water element Bomber Shitennou. She is the mid-world boss of World 1. She initially attacks by swimming around and dropping fish bombs (Mermaid Bomb), and also sending out bubbles to carry bombs away while she sits on her rock between attacks (Aqua Bubble). When she is brought down to 2 hearts, she starts swimming at high speed and creating icicles in her wake. She is weak to Thunder Bombs.
Thunder Bomber
The Lightning element Bomber Shitennou. He is the mid-world boss of World 2. He attacks by sending arcs of electricity between the arena walls (Thunder Attack), and also by setting up electrical traps (Thunderbomb). When he is whittled down to 2 hearts, he starts bouncing off the walls at high speed in a triangle shape, leaving a wall of electricity behind him; he ends this attack by attempting to tackle Bomberman/Max. He is weak to Aqua Bombs.
Flame Bomber
The Fire element Bomber Shitennou. He is the mid-world boss of World 3. He attacks by spinning around with a flamethrower (Flame Fire), leaping up and striking the ground to spray fire in a circle (Fire Knuckle), and, once he is reduced to 2 hearts, occasionally creating illusionary copies of himself. He is weak to Ice Bombs.
Grand Bomber
The Earth element Bomber Shitennou. Whether or not his name is supposed to be "Ground Bomber" is a mystery. He is the mid-world boss of World 4. He attacks by rolling at high speed around the arena (Rolling Attack), spinning and shooting out his spikes (Needle Bomb), and charging straight at Bomberman/Max. At 2 hearts or less, he begins pounding the ground to make a big explosion (Earthquake). He is weak to Hurricane Bombs.
Dark Force Bomber
Dark Force Bomber possesses all of the Bomber Shitennou's powers to a certain extent. His attacks were Dark Bubble (Mermaid Bomber's Aqua Bubble), Dark Thunder (Thunder Bomber's Thunder Attack), Dark Needle (Grand Bomber's Needle Bomb), and Dark Fire (Flame Bomber's Flame Fire). He could also get bigger, but he was reduced to trying to squash Bomberman and shooting the feathers on his wings while he was in giant mode. Several fans have claimed that he resembles the Pokemon, Mewtwo.
The Five Bomber Kings
Created by Bagular in Super Bomberman 4 on the SNES and also make an appearance in Bomberman Party Edition on the PSX, this quintet of evil doers were all also playable on Battle mode. It would appear that these are who the Crush Bombers are based upon, as there looks, names and attacks are very similar.
Ghost/Great Bomber
Typically seen in black and purple with a large cape, Ghost is the leader of the Bomber Kings whose special ability is invincibility. When triggered, Ghost cannot move and after it has finished, he may only lay one bomb of the lowest power level, as well as being significantly slower for a short amount of time.
Bazooka Bomber
Red and while in appearance, with bionics over the right eye and a Rocket Launcher on the right arm which is connected to his backpack through several wires. Bazooka's special ability is to fire his rocket launcher which acts more like a flame thrower as there is no visible shell. In the opening sequence of Bomberman Party Edition, Bazooka Bomber's rocket launcher lets out a stream of flames suggesting that in fact that's what it is. After firing, he may only lay one bomb of the lowest power level, as well as being significantly slower for a short amount of time.
Jet Bomber
White and blue in appearance, with a visor on-top of his eyes and a large Jet pack strapped to his back, Jet is able to fly forward on his jetpack destroying any unlucky bomber that he may hit or who gets caught in flames from his jetpack. After the temporally one directional speed boost, he may only lay one bomb of the lowest power level, as well as being significantly slower for a short amount of time.
Lady Bomber
Female bomber in a primarily orange dress, eyes are shaped in a different fashion to show the gender difference between Lady and her comrades. Lady commands what would appear to look like three missiles that can be pulled together to fire a laser beam that scatters two power-ups in various angles of anyone it hits. In the Opening Sequence to Bomberman Party Edition however, she fires her missiles in a fashion of actual projectiles in a counter attack against Bomber Chen.
Hammer Bomber
Green in appearance, with one massive yellow eye on the left and a Spiky extendable Morning Star attached to the left arm. Special ability is to swing the Morning Star awaround several squares, anyone hit loses two items, scattered in various directions.
Hige-Hige Bandits
The name of this group is a bit of a misnomer, as they are more interested in universal conquest than they are in theft. The Hige Hige Bandits are composed of 3 main commanders and a legion of robotic minions.
Hige-Hige Bandits (minions)
The basic (and incompetent) members of the Hige-Hige gang (hence the name) [Hige-hige-dan in Japanese]. They are very weak and usually seen doing Mujoe's dirty deeds. In Saturn Bomberman and Bomberman Jetters, they had the ability to make bombs. They don't show personality and appearently don't have free will. In the Bomberman Jetters anime, it is revealed that they were robots created by Bagular. The Jetters Anime also reveals what the Hige Hige Bandits do during their free time when they are not stealing unique items as shown in episode 14 of the Anime.
Bagular
The main villain in many of the games. He looks like a blue and white, large, elderly Bomberman with a bushy white beard, and (in some games) appears to be bigger than Bomberman. Bagular's monocle and cape are also distinguishing features. He supposedly first appeared as the main villain of Bomberman '94, in which he attempted to run a comet-disguised ship into Planet Bomber after throwing it into chaos, but his name was not stated. He went on to appear in Super Bomberman 3, 4, Bomberman Hero, Bomberman Wars, Bomberman World (PSX), and Neo Bomberman, among other games.
In the English manual for Super Bomberman 3 Bagular is known as "Bugler" and in the PlayStation game known as Bomberman World "Burglar", which is another possible translation of his Japanese name, as is "Bagura", though another official translation could be "Bugglar" since that name was shown in the credits of Bomberman Fantasy Race in both English and Japanese versions. Bagular is also the main villain in the recent new Bomberman PlayStation Portable. The English manual of Bomberman PSP refers to Bagular as Professor Bagular.
In Bomberman Hero, he is the leader of the Garaden Empire which holds Princess Millian captive for most of the game.
He is the true leader of the Hige Hige Bandits, with Mujoe as his second-in-command.
Mujoe
A pawn of Bagular, Mujoe is usually in charge of commanding the Hige-Hige Gang's troops in the Bomberman Jetters anime. His first appearance was in Saturn Bomberman, was behind the events in Bomberman Max 2 and he also summons the final boss in Bomberman Generations and is seen as the main antagonist of said games.
Dr MechaDoc
Dr. MechaDoc is the Hige Hige Bandit's corrupted mad scientist who first made his appearance along with Mujoe in Saturn Bomberman. In early games, MechaDoc has white hair, whereas, in recent games, he has grey hair. He prefers not to engage in combat, but to rather create the many machines used by Mujoe and the Hige Hige bandits. He is also a character in Bomberman Jetters.
Other Characters
Max
Bomberman's ally who likes to do things his own way. He is, however, a villain throughout the Bomberman Jetters anime. Max wears a black suit/droid-like armor with a helmet that resembles Ultraman. It is noted however that this is not his "skin" as he appears to be of Bomberman's species (or possibly of the human-like people found on planet Phantarion in Bomberman Tournament; Max has a five fingered hand as compared to a pink ball Bomberman's species have in the game.) In Jetters, however, he is purely android. Max appears in the later Bomberman games. Max is the main character in Bomberman Max Red Challenger for GBC and Bomberman Max Red Advance for the GBA, and uses his own set of plasma bombs (which are no different from Bomberman's). Max's disappearance is an important part of the plot of Bomberman Story/Bomberman Tournament, which reveals some of Max's backstory. He has also made an appearance in the game Bomberman Generation. When Bomberman is in a boss fight and is low on health, he'll appear and aid Bomberman by taking a chunk of the boss' health (exactly one full heart,) and dropping a heart into the arena, if Bomberman has collected enough lightning cards. He is also a playable character in the game Bomberman Jetters. He is similar to Bomberman, but is unable to use Charaboms. He can use the Hyper Plasma Bomb to blow away enemies, but this is not very effective against bosses, only doing one small heart's worth of damage.
Regulus/Bulzeeb
In his first appearance, Bomberman 64, he was a subordinate of Altair. He has blue armor that slightly resembles a jet. He wears a large visor completely covering his face. With a personality similar to Black Bomber, he seems more intelligent than the other subordinates (Artemis and Orion, although Orion supposedly has great mechanical skills). After Bomberman's "friend", Sirius, betrays him, Regulus joins him for the secret final battle, and he is the one who destroys the Omni Cube, thwarting Sirius' entire plan. In the sequel Bomberman 64: The Second Attack, Regulus changes from blue to black color and calls himself Bulzeeb. He is also revealed to be the 7th Astral Knight. After Bomberman defeated him in a rematch he reveals that unlike the other 6 Astral Knights, he managed to resist being brainwashed by the God of Chaos. He then promises that they will eventually have another rematch. At the end of the game, he is found defeated by the Rukifelth, and gives Bomberman his remaining energy. Rukifelth then kills him using a gravity sphere similar to his own. Bulzeeb is resurrected and grateful later on, but still wants to finish his rivalry with Bomberman one day. In the ending, when he is referred to as Bulzeeb, he corrects them and says that his true name is Regulus, and he is the 7th Elemental Knight. Reassuring his respect for Bomberman, he leaves with the Shadow Stone. He has not appeared in any game since. The name "Regulus" like the other bosses in Bomberman 64 is derived from star constellations while "Bulzeeb" is probably derived from Beelzebub which in Christian demonology is another name for Lucifer or Satan, and in Jewish demonology is a fly-like demon. Strangely, in Bomberman 64 he didn't have any shadow-based powers, but he's in a snow area (which doesn't necessarily mean that he has snow-ice powers), and can attack with a deadly charge-and-slash combo.
Orion
Orion (Haut in Japan) is one of the subordinates of the Emperor Altair. His base of operations is an active volcano. He is one of the few bombers in the game that will actively seek to knock Bomberman unconscious, pick up his stunned body, and toss him off the edge. This is dangerous for Bomberman since he has a shield ability which will knock him out if he walks inside the barrier radius. After he defeats him, he does not die, but rather leaves like Regulus. Instead of flying away, though, Orion blows himself up and uses the blast to get away from the fight. (One may believe he blows up but if you look closely you will see him flying up in the air as he starts screaming.) Orion comes back during the boss battle controlling the mobile-suit Hades, which he modified from a mining robot, but presumeably dies when Hades is defeated and sinks into molten lava with it. Orion, aside from screaming when he loses and battle grunts, has no dialogue throughout the game, unlike the others.
-
Orion.
-
Hades, Orion's mobile-suit.
Artemis
Artemis (Capella in Japan) is the only bomber under Altair's leadership that actually dies the first time she is defeated. Upon being beaten, Artemis shorts out and blows up. Artemis uses a tri-shot flame technique which is effective at a distance, but useless if Bomberman rushes her. She apparently led the attack on Blue Resort, sapping the energy of the area for the Omni Cube, as seen in the opening of the game.
Altair
From the beginning, Altair is acknowledged as the main villain, and he keeps that title until the true ending is unlocked. He invades Planet Bomber using the Omni Cube and anchors his fortress to the planet. Altair is dressed in purple and black armor. He has a small droid (named Vega) that shoots a laser beam capable of vaporizing any matter it hits. Altair uses Vega as a distraction in the "final" battle and fuses with it once the first stage of the fight is over. In his second form, he gains more power and the ability to shoot a slashing energy wave at Bomberman (although this merely knocks Bomberman out.) He can also vanish at will and will often use this ability to evade bomb explosions. This transformation may have an adverse effect on him, though, since he remains stunned much longer in his second form whenever Bomberman kicks a bomb at him.
Sirius
In the Stage "Blizzard Peaks" of Bomberman 64 Sirius confronts Bomberman telling him that Altair killed his family and he wishes to help Bomberman in return for revenge. Sirius tests Bomberman's skills in the second level of the first world. He is the only bomber that will pump up a bomb and toss it at Bomberman. He takes it easy on Bomberman and flies away as soon as he's had enough. Sirius will also help Bomberman if he is in trouble throughout the game whether it be through offering cryptic advice or save him from falling off a cliff.
However, after Bomberman defeated Altair with 100 gold cards Sirius reveals his true indentity.
Mighty
Mighty is White Bombers's brother from the series Bomberman Jetters, and bears a striking resemblance to Bomberman, he is the main character in Bomberman Jetters for GameBoy Advance. Mighty has a silver visor covering his right eye, wears a red cape and has slightly thicker eyebrows, has red gloves with fingers, and also turquoise boots unlike Bomberman's (White Bomber) pink shoes, but those are the only major differences between him and Bomberman. It is later revealed that his grandfather wore similar clothing and had a striking resemblance to Mighty, as he also had thick eyebrows. He is also the leader of the Jetters, a group of people who stop the Hige-Hige bandits from stealing unique things. White Bomber and him also share a very close relationship. He has made few appearances in the games, and supposedly died during a mission. Mighty is an unlockable character in Bomberman Jetters; after collecting all cards of a certain color, he can be played in "Versus" mode.
Dr. Ein
A scientist who assists Bomberman in a lot of games and founded the Jetters, usually responsible for conducting the tutorial of most games.
Cap'n Bom
A pirate bomber and leader of the Bombies, an army of mindless zombie bombers.
Nitros
He was the leader of the Garaden Empire's soldiers. Bomberman fights Nitros in one level in each of the 5 worlds in Bomberman Hero. However he doesn't have to be defeated as he will escape when the time runs out. However in Garaden, he has to be defeated to have his identity revealed as a brainwashed Bomber Base trainee. Nitros uses red bombs, which explode white, instead of Bomberman's black ones, and he learns more abilities with each battle, including being able to shoot 4 bombs at Bomberman while running at him, and different ability spaces on his level, like shooting spikes etc.
Charaboms
Charaboms resemble Pokémon, and they often help Bomberman progress in the story. The most famous of these Charaboms is Pommy, who looks like and is possibly named after a combination of Kirby and Pikachu. Pommy has been Bomberman's sidekick ever since Bomberman 64: The Second Attack in which he is loyal, but cowardly. Oddly enough, in the opening cinema of The Second Attack, he claims to be a mimic rather than a charabom (though this makes sense game-wise as the term "charabom" wasn't used until Bomberman Tournament). He is capable of shooting lightning and taking on many different forms, such as Pommy Dragon when merged with Pteradon (or, in the earlier games, fed the right food), he looks like an all red earless stubby tailed Gigimon with wings, he also makes a short cameo in the Bomberman Jetters anime. Pommy has appeared in every Bomberman game that involved Charaboms, Pommy himself constantly says 'Myu". There are a variety of other Charaboms, each classified by element (fire, earth, thunder/lightning, water, etc.). Charaboms fight using a skill set (attack, special, guard) in any order. The battle then plays out as in a Pokémon game, with effective attacks, less effective attacks, Defense, Offense, and HP. Charaboms can be merged (given that they are of different types) into stronger Charaboms with new abilities (combinations of the abilities of the two Charaboms that were merged) that can help Bomberman in the game.
In Bomberman Jetters, all of the charaboms can evolve three times, which increases the resemblance to Pokémon.
Rooeys
Rooeys are kangaroo-like animals with rabbit ears who help Bomberman by letting him ride on their backs. Louie is the name of one of these creatures. Louie is green, as all Rooeys have individual colors. His most recent game appearances were in Hero, Fantasy Race, Tournament, and the opening scene of Jetters. He also has a large, if not major role in the Bomberman Jetters anime.
Wario
Mario's rival Wario also makes an appearance in Wario Blast: Featuring Bomberman! for Game Boy. Wario one day stumbles upon Bomberman's world, and, being the greedy sort he is, decides to loot it for his own gain. Bomberman is the only one that stands between Wario and the complete decimation of his world.
Wario Blast is much more of a Bomberman game than a Wario game, being based on the Bomberman concept.
