The UNITE Group plc is a UK public limited company that specialises in student accommodation and hospitality.

History

The UNITE Group plc was created in 1991 in Bristol. UNITE's founder, Nicholas Porter, saw an opportunity in regenerating old office blocks that stood on prime city locations into student accommodation. During this era, student numbers were beginning to increase, however, the student accommodation market remained relatively untouched. This offered an opportunity for UNITE to break into the market.

By 1995, UNITE had 500 beds in Bristol. Five years later, UNITE was fully listed on the stock exchange (LSEUTG) and UNITE is now home to some 35,000 students in 125 properties across 31 towns and cities.[1]

During this time, UNITE opened regional offices in London, Salford, Edinburgh and Newcastle and also introduced a modular manufacturing facility in Stroud, Gloucestershire, supplying modules for UNITE's accommodation and external markets.

Awards

In 2006 The Guardian quoted UNITE as one of the UK’s top 100 companies to work for. UNITE is Investors in People accredited as well as becoming a constituent of the FTSE 250 group of companies.

In 2006 UNITE was announced winner of the Management Today and Unisys Service Excellence Awards in the retail and consumer services category.[2]

Also in 2006, one of UNITE's Hospitality Managers was made National Customer Services Manager of the year. [3]
