Battlefield 2142 is a first-person shooter computer game designed by Digital Illusions CE and is the fourth game in the Battlefield series. It is set in the 22nd century, during a new ice age. As of 2006, there have been over one million rounds played since its release.[1]

The game was built primarily for multiplayer use allowing a maximum 64 players on a server and allows a single player mode with AI bots on Conquest mode with a maximum up 16 players. It has its own ranking system to keep track of the user's stats similar to the one used in its predecessor, Battlefield 2. It additionally opens up a new field of vehicles not seen in Battlefield 2 as well as new futuristic weapons the player is able to use. Battlefield 2142 has an unlock system allowing the player to choose a new unlock every time they achieve a new rank rather than making them purchase the item. EA Games has also released a booster pack called Northern Strike, which contains 3 new maps, 10 new unlocks and 2 new vehicles. At the 2007 WWDC, it was announced that Battlefield 2142 would be released for Macintosh computers in July 2007.[2] It was released on August 28th for Macintosh.

Story

In 2106, the world froze in what was termed the "second Ice Age".

As snow and storms swept down from the north, the encroaching ice swallowed living spaces and resources and a frantic battle for survival began across the globe. Small-scale conflicts bloomed into major confrontations, as desperate nations united to form new superpowers-- the European-led EU forces and the Russo-Asian PAC army. With the formation of these coalitions came the consolidation of brains and resources needed to develop deadly new battlefront technologies: the Titans, vast dreadnoughts with the colossal destructive power to dominate the skies, and lethal, armoured Battlewalkers, designed to outpace and outgun infantry. The fast scout vehicles that have a special ability ready to ambush, the EMP APC that has launch pods for titan mode and the devastating tank that stalks the land with its power.

By early 2138, the world's six factions were heavily fortified, ready to battle over the world's remaining land and resources due to the northern lands being covered in a layer of ice. Tensions rose between factions to compete over the last lands suitable for human resources. Expecting an invasion by the Pan Asian Coalition (PAC) into the agriculture-rich plains of Northern Africa, the European Union concentrated its resources along the Mediterranean, ready to assist the Union of African States. A foray by two PAC battalions into Egypt seemed to confirm their suspicions, but the attacks were merely feints, meant to distract the world from the PAC's primary objective—to destroy the military might of the EU's premiere units still located in Europe.

Following the defeat of the EU army in Europe, the stage was set for the Pan Asian Coalition military to force its way into the EU-occupied African mainland. In February 2142, the EU formed 'The Mediterranean Wall', a line of defences along the North African coast from Morocco to Egypt. Meanwhile, the Pan Asian Coalition was drawing up a series of deception plans under the code names Kupalo, Dazhbog and Perun. These exercises were designed to preoccupy and divide the EU forces in preparation for the PAC's primary mission, Operation Motherland, a comprehensive, multi-pronged assault on the African continent.

Gameplay

Battlefield 2142 does not use its own game engine[3] and is the first game in the series to not include the United States as a playable faction. It is also the first game in the series not to include the Wake Island map.[4] Battlefield 2142 includes two gameplay modes, Conquest and Titan,[5] the latter of which can only be played online in multiplayer maps. The Conquest mode supports up to 64 players online, while the Titan mode normally supports 48 due to performance concerns. However, the Titan mode can be modified to support 64 players as well. The single player mode consists of a maximum of 16 players, which include the 15 AI bots.

Battlefield 2142 features four different playable kits for the EU and PAC forces: Assault, Support, Engineer, and Recon. All of the kits have different weapon and equipment combinations, however they share several core weapons and abilities. The player is able to choose the armour type when selecting their kit prior to spawning. Heavy armour (the default) offers greater protection but reduces the distance that the player can sprint. Light armour offers less protection but allows the player to sprint further and recuperate faster.

Conquest

The Conquest mode involves players fighting each other, while working to capture and defend spawnpoints, indicated by stationary flags which change colour according to the faction that controls them. There are several types of Conquest modes: Head-on, Conquest, Assault Lines, and Double Assault Lines. In Head-on, both teams start with one flag that can't be captured. Whichever team has the majority of the flags will initiate a ticket drain on the other team. The ticket drain is constant and cannot be increased by controlling more than a simple majority of the flags. In Double Assault both teams start with one base that cannot be captured by the opposite team. In Conquest, both teams start with one flag, that can be captured and play from there. In Assault Lines, the EU starts with one flag that cannot be captured, and the PAC starts with all the rest of the flags, in addition to one flag (called the Home Base) that can only be captured once the EU have taken all of the other flags. Assault Lines is only playable with Northern Strike. Double Assault Lines has only been seen as of yet in the 1.40 beta patch which included a 2142 version of the Battlefield 2 map "Highway Tampa." In Double Assault Lines, each team has a base that cannot be captured until all other flags have been captured. Unlike the Assault Lines gamemode, there has been no indication if there will be a new award for capturing the EU base. In all of the conquest modes, every respawn of a soldier takes one ticket.

Titan

File:TitanAssault.jpg
Assault Pods in flight from a PAC APC, headed for an EU Titan.

The Titan mode involves players from opposing teams whose objective is to destroy the other team's Titan,[6] while trying to defend their own. Titans are massive heavily armoured flying warships, which have powerful force fields protecting them from enemy intrusion or conventional weapons fire. As the force fields are up during the first half of a battle, players must fight to control the anti-Titan missile silos scattered about the battlefield on the ground. Titans can only be moved around the battlefield by the team's Commander. Each Titan has 4 anti-ground guns and 2 anti-air guns that, when used, will contribute to the fight on the ground. Occasionally, Titans are not moved at all, or very little, due to server latency issues, however, they can be (and often are) moved close together. Titans can be boarded by infantry via "assault pods" launched from an APC or from a rival Titan, by air-drop from a Squad Leader Spawn Beacon signal, or by landing an air transport on top of the Titan. The Titan can only be boarded in any manner once the force field is completely destroyed. Players must then damage the hull by either destroying four reactor security consoles and then the reactor core itself, or by continuing to control the missile silos that launch at the Titan. Both methods work together to damage the Titan. When the Titan’s hull fails, a 30-second abandon ship timer is triggered, alerting players to evacuate the Titan before the reactor explodes, taking the Titan and all aboard with it. However, the timer is never shown much to players' preference. During the beta release of the game, there was an award for those who managed to escape the destroyed Titan before the 30-second timer ended. In the retail game, the round ends when the Titan is destroyed, and because player deaths triggered by the end of a round do not count, the evacuation of the Titan had little significance aside from inciting a rush in the player. In patch 1.05, DICE reinstated the award for those attacking players who escaped the destruction in the "Titan Survival Pin." However receiving the pin requires a very precise timing to land on the ground, causing confusion amongst players initially.[7]

Highway Tampa

On June 21, 2007, following the beta release of a Battlefield 2 map under the same name, EA announced that the map Highway Tampa would be released as a free download for Battlefield 2142.[8] A vehicle focused map, Highway Tampa will feature both Titan mode play and a newly introduced game mode dubbed Double Assault Lines. The map is slated for release "in the coming months."
On June 25, 2007, an official beta patch 1.40 was released in an incremental and full form. This public patch contains a beta version of Highway Tampa available for testing. The official EA announcement is here.

Statistics tracking

The ranking and points system of Battlefield 2142 is similar to Battlefield 2, however, different ranks are featured. As with Battlefield 2, a key feature of the game is "Character Persistence", which saves and tracks almost every aspect of gameplay for players. Unlike Battlefield 2, however, the user is given the option to create up to four soldiers, as opposed to Battlefield 2's limitation of one per account. When playing the game in online multiplayer mode on specified servers, a master server tracks player points, ranks, equipment, and other statistics.

Rank

The Battlefield 2142 rank system is comprised of a number of partially fictitious, partially realistic military ranks, and are (for the most part) each divided by a silver/gold format, with players attaining the silver version of the rank (e.g. Corporal Silver) before reaching the gold rank (e.g. Corporal Gold). New ranks are earned by attaining experience points, which can be earned for actions on a ranked server such as killing an enemy soldier/vehicle, healing/resupplying teammates or carrying out orders given by the Squad Leader/Commander(negative points may be earned by actions such as teamkilling). The rank system is designed to be progressive so ranks are earned faster when a player begins(for example, 40 points are needed to climb from the lowest to the 2nd lowest rank while 3600 points are needed to advance from the 2nd highest to the highest rank). This provides new players with a number of unlocks straight away to give them an edge (as well as ambition). Later ranks require more effort, time, and skill from the player as the extremely high amount of points can usually be attained only through awards which may give up to 2000 points apiece. The final three ranks of the game only given to a certain number of players at a time, with Major General given to 50 players, Lieutenant General given to 25 players, and the highest rank, Supreme Commander, given to only one player at a time. These top three are brevet ranks; players retain those ranks until other players surpass them.

Medals, Badges, Ribbons and Pins

These are awards that each have their own specific criteria that can only be fulfilled in multiplayer mode. Most awards typically have two to five criteria, composed of In A Round (IAR) criteria and Global criteria. IAR criteria must be accomplished within a single round, not through multiple rounds. Global criteria is accumulated whenever you play on a ranked server. For example, the Titan Commander badge (silver) requires you to (IAR) be the commander in Titan mode for twenty minutes and (Global) accumulate 1000 commander points. Each award (with the exception of Medals, which are more for prestige since they are the hardest to obtain) delivers a certain amount of experience points, which go towards attaining a new rank. Badges, which have three levels of achievement (bronze, silver, and gold), and Ribbons deliver the most points, while Pins offer very few points since they are relatively easy to get, and may be obtained more than once.

Unlocks

File:Support2142.jpg
A support soldier crouching behind an IPS shield

In Battlefield 2142, every time a player earns a new rank, they are able to choose a new unlock. There are a total of 50 unlocks (40 BF2142 Core Game, 10 NS Booster Pack) and there are different categories of unlocks including class unlocks, squad unlocks, and ability unlocks. Class unlocks are specific to the kit (Recon, Support, etc.) which is being used. Ability unlocks are universal for all the kits. Squad unlocks can only be used by squad leaders and require a certain amount of people in that player's squad to be used. Unlocks are in tiers and require the player to progress up through the tree to unlock higher-level equipment.

File:Assault unlocks with ns unlocks.png

A temporary unlock can be awarded to all members of a squad if squad members follow orders directed by the squad leader and heal or resupply their team mates. This type of unlock, known as a "Field Upgrade", persists only until the player disconnects from the server, upon which it is removed from the player's inventory. The Field Upgrade is a sort of ‘try before you buy’ feature, allowing players to experience certain unlocks before they use one of their hard earned unlock credits to unlock it. Certain unlocks are only available after purchasing the Northern Strike booster pack, and they are on top of all the other unlocks in the unlock trees of the core game.

Note: Field Upgrades only allow players to test the equipment one level higher on their original unlock tree. They also allow players without Northern Strike to have temporary access to the upgrades that are only available in Northern Strike.

Updates

EA Games has released five updates for Battlefield 2142 to date. These have addressed various issues ingame, some of which are causes of minor imbalance (for example, a bug causing the missiles of one faction's gunships to be homing while the other faction's gunship had "dumb" missiles). However some players have complained that minor issues (such as small deviation adjustments to guns) were repeatedly being tweaked while major issues (exploits which allowed sentry guns to locate players behind walls and allowed critically wounded players to "see through" the whole Titan) remained unaddressed. Certain fixes have also created more problems. For instance, an exploit that allows players to use the Squad Leader drones as "lifts" by stepping on them in order to reach normally inaccessible locations such as high rooftops was remedied in the 1.30 update. However, this has caused problems such as the drone getting stuck in low doorways or blowing up and killing the user upon deployment.

All these updates are available from EA’s Official Battlefield 2142 Website.

Expansions and Booster Packs

Northern Strike

File:Hachimoto.jpg
A Type 36 Hachimoto fast attack vehicle.

On March 8, 2007, Electronic Arts released the Northern Strike booster pack for the Battlefield 2142 game.[9] In Northern Strike, the battle moves to northern and central Europe in 2145, 3 years after the war began. The PAC has set up strongholds in the urban areas left abandoned because of the advancing ice sheets and attacking PAC forces. The EU launches an offensive to take back its land from the PAC. This fictional invasion greatly resembles the 1944 invasion of Normandy, whereas Europe was finally reclaimed by Allied Forces after an invasion expedition had arrived.

The booster pack contains ten new unlocks, three new maps, two new vehicles, and a new game mode called Assault Lines. The booster pack was exclusively available through the EA Link for $10.00 USD; it is now available from retailers. [10]

Vehicles

The expansion adds two new vehicles (IFVs, or Infantry Fighting Vehicles): the Hachimoto IFV for the PAC, and the Goliath IFV, a heavily armored urban warfare vehicle, for the EU.

Type 36 Hachimoto

The Hachimoto is an extremely fast hover vehicle. Its hover ability, paired with its speed, makes it a challenge to control without practice. It shares the FAV's speed boost function, giving it a well known hit-and-run element, this makes it especially lethal to the EU's slow and cumbersome Goliath. It also has very weak armor; it is only resistant to small arms fire. The driver and gunner are also completely exposed to enemy fire. It features driver-operated cannons similar to but much weaker and less accurate than the auto-cannons on the PAC battlewalker, this a trade-off for the splash damage it has, curiously these guns also feature aircraft 'lock-on' rings when pointed at enemy aircraft but features no actual lock-on. The gunner seat features a high-speed grenade launcher and a remote-guided missile launcher like the one in the gunner seat of the gunships, however many people find it easier to control.

A3 Goliath IFV (Infantry Fighting Vehicle)

The Goliath is similar in size and shape to an APC, but has significantly stronger armour that continuously regenerates. The armour’s regeneration is generated by seven repair cells located on top frontal area, back and sides of the Goliath. The cells are electric blue and glow while making repairs, otherwise they lie dormant. These consoles are easily destroyed, requiring only a single rocket or missile (the reward being 'Points for Destroying a Strategic Point or Object'). As each repair cell is destroyed, the Goliath's ability to regenerate armor is diminished, making the vehicle much easier to destroy. The Goliath's frontal armour has a number of notable qualities. First and foremost being that it can withstand an extremely high number of anti-vehicle motion mines and sustain absolute minimal damage (which is then repaired). This allows it to clear minefields for other vehicles behind it. This same quality also makes the forward armour much more resistant towards rocket and turret fire then the rest of its body. However this armour is balanced out by the fact that if it is hit anywhere else by a motion mine it may destroy as many as two repair consoles per hit. In the teaser trailer, the Goliath is shown completely unscathed from an EMP strike, orbital strike, a number of blows from infantry missile launchers, and even a head-on collision with a FAV. The Goliath also operates similar to a EU APC, except without the pods and different guns; both vehicles have weapons for each passenger. The Goliath driver's weapon consists of a scatter-cannon and a launcher for an upgraded motion mine that explodes when a vehicle comes too close, or on impact with an enemy vehicle. The passenger weapons are two normal machine guns in the rear, and two explosive projectile cannons in the front that do not damage armoured vehicles but have splash damage and are highly lethal to infantry. The rear guns have infinite ammunition while the forward cannons will eventually run out and overheat relatively quickly. The Goliath is only available in Assault Lines mode in Northern Strike.

Awards and Unlocks

Northern Strike contains eleven new awards (including the pin). Each new award in Northern Strike includes an unlock credit (except the pin, which is worth 10 points). While these unlocks can be used to unlock Northern Strike Items, they can also be used to unlock items from the core game. The Northern Strike unlocks are also available for use in the core Battlefield 2142. They can be picked as Field Unlocks if the unlocks preceding them are taken, and can be obtained by stealing someone else's kit.

Maps

File:Liberation of leipzeg.png
The 64 Player map Liberation of Leipzig

Northern Strike offers three new maps, Bridge at Remagen, Liberation of Leipzig, and Port Bavaria. The new maps which are the only available maps for Assault Lines, are the only maps that spawn either of the new vehicles, and feature large numbers of Battlewalkers but no tanks. They also feature a new "Horizontal Pod Launcher" structure that functions similarly to the Pod Launchers found on the Titans (but with reduced range).

Assault Lines

Assault Lines mode is similar to Conquest, but with a couple of major differences. Most asymmetrical conquest maps feature the PAC as the attacking force with the EU defending, whereas Assault Lines reverses the roles. In Assault Lines, all APCs plus the Goliath are considered spawn points, much like they are in Titan mode. Finally, the PAC home base cannot be captured like a normal flag. Rather, every other spawn point must belong to the EU team before they can begin claiming the spawn as their own. Completion of this rewards a special pin to those playing as EU at the time, players who switch teams after the home base has been captured do not receive the pin.

Demo

EA released a playable online only Demo of the retail game featuring the Sidi Power Plant Map on either conquest or Titan mode. The game is Host to many servers from all over including some official EA servers, all of these are demo only. Points can be earned on the demo but unlocks cannot be achieved or used, the demo also does not update along with the complete game allowing people who take advantage of the glitches to still do so if they have updated their retail version.

Development

Battlefield 2142 had been rumored to be in development ever since a 30 second video was leaked to the internet in January 2006. The video described itself as an "internal test." The proof of concept depicts the games' various vehicles storming through a futuristic city. A photo depicting the walker was taken from this video and subsequently used in marketing for the game.

The rumours began in earnest following a February 2006 interview with Dan Blackstone, a senior producer from EA, in which he mentioned:

We’re about to announce something very big, so stay tuned. One other interviewer asked this and I gave him a hint, so it’s only fair that I do the same for you: 3213/3*2. Or said another way: S.R. 4588164.[11]

The S.R. (Square Root) of 4588164 is 2142 (3213÷3×2 equals 2142 as well), hence the rumors. The only proof of existence was the cover story of the PC Gamer magazine and the trailer, published on the very same magazine, until March 21, 2006, when EA/DICE announced that, the next game in the Battlefield series would be Battlefield 2142, in their March 21, 2006 Community Update.[12] In the Battlefield 2 Armored Fury Booster Pack map Midnight Sun, there was a drivable muscle car with the license plate number 2142. Additionally in Armored Fury, there was a billboard advertising a digital wrist watch, which displays '21:42' as the time, and a Mushroom cloud with the caption message, "Watch For The Future." Additionally in Armored Fury, the drivable semi-truck had a magazine on the passenger seat that reads "Ice Age Approaches."

Battlefield 2142 was officially announced and playable at E3 2006."[13][14]

The Battlefield 2142 beta was released in the third week of August, after generating immense hype.[15] However, it was revealed that the beta was not a complete "open" beta upon its release, which disappointed many fans. At first, the general belief was that it was to be a FilePlanet subscriber-only beta,[16] but it was later revealed to additionally have an invite system. At that time the beta was only available to certain Fileplanet subscribers (keys were given out on a first-come, first-serve basis) and those who were invited. Some fansites had been holding contests giving out invitations to the BF2142 beta as prizes. On August 31, a large number of keys were given out by Fileplanet for free, and the beta client was upgraded. However, as of September 2, the beta was closed as all the keys had been given out. The Fileplanet beta ended on September 12, 2006.

Retail bonuses

Collector's Edition

A Collector's Edition of the game was released on DVD, which came in a numbered metal box. This edition came with a Battlefield 2142 chain and handphone strap, as well as a free rank.

Best Buy

Players who pre-ordered Battlefield 2142 from Best Buy were not only given a free 64MB dog tag styled flash drive, but also a free "downloadable assault weapon", which replaced the existing standard EU assault rifle (Scar 11), with the "Bofors Defence Machine Gun", which was a reskinned version of the same weapon. While some players like the replacement, it has been criticized by some for the size of the gun taking up more of the screen and potentially blocking out enemies.[17]. There is currently no way to restore the original assault rifle short of asking EA support to deactivate your old CD key and issue you a new one on a new account which existing stats, unlocks, and rewards do not transfer over to. Electronic Arts customer service currently has no way to remove the pre-order key from an EA account, which would restore the original skin.[18]

On March 23, 2007, EA community management posted a locked and stickied thread on the Battlefield 2142 forums, acknowledging customers' dissatisfaction with the promotional weapon skin, and that EA and DICE were discussing the best way to implement an option to remove the skin for those who did not want it. The forum post was never updated with information from either company. As of June 20, 2007, the forum thread has been removed. There is still no option to disable the weapon skin.[19]

GameStop

Players who pre-ordered Battlefield 2142 from Game Stop received a free in-game rank. This rank was stackable with the Battlefield 2 Veteran's Program promotion, allowing players to begin halfway through the second rank upon release of the retail game.

BF2 Veterans Program

People that played Battlefield 2 could participate in a "Veterans Program" that let them reserve their name for Battlefield 2142 before launch, get an immediate in-game rank-up, receive an in-game notification icon that lets other players know they played Battlefield 2, and receive exclusive verbal taunts to use against other players in Battlefield 2.[20]

Reception

Battlefield 2142 generally received positive reviews from game-rating communities but lower than these of its predecessors[21] IGN rated Battlefield 2142 an 8.4[22] and GameSpot rated Battlefield 2142 an 8.1.[23] WorthPlaying gave Battlefield 2142 an 8.9 out of 10 and said "Battlefield 2142 continues the tradition of combining ground forces, land and air vehicles, and huge, wide-open maps in an addictive, wholly entertaining package that sets the bar high for competitors to follow."[24] Game Rankings's average rating for the game is at 80%.[25]

Advertising components

File:Bf2142-advert.png
Screen shot showing Battlefield 2142's dynamic advertising

Battlefield 2142 shipped with dynamic in-game advertising provided by IGA Worldwide. A similar system is featured in games such as Splinter Cell Chaos Theory, and SWAT 4.[26] The system changes advertisements on objects such as billboards in-game. These in-game advertisements have been dubbed adware by some, and there has been a vocal backlash against this element of the game.[27] Some players also alleged that the game contained spyware that monitors the user's web-browsing habits. However, DICE employees have claimed on the game's forums that the game only reports what in-game advertisements the player look at, and for how long.[28] The Australian version of 2142 however lacks the Dynamic Advertising feature[29] as it is believed to be illegal under the Australian Spyware Act.[30] EA/DICE are currently holding a contest to find the best player in-game ad ideas (futuristic ads) to put into the empty billboards in the game.[31] Additionally, recently much of the "advertising space" has been used to show propaganda for new in game features and helping to feed rumors of a new game type in the works. Intel has advertised in the game, and recently the Discovery Channel has placed advertising in the game for their Future Weapons series. More recently advertisements for the DVD release of the movie Ghost Rider have appeared. The current one is advertising the theatre release of the movie The Bourne Ultimatum and Die Hard 4.

Billboards without paid advertisements generally have recruitment posters for the factions, and ads for "DICE Travel." These travel ads sell the reader into going to the various maps, such as Verdun or Berlin, for ₤2142, with taglines such as "Gun not included" and "One-way." Some billboard ads recently added after the new year can be found during the gameplay saying "Happy 2143 EU Soldiers!" Additionally there is a reference to the sci-fi film Starship Troopers, and by extension, World War II recruitment posters, on billboards featuring the slogan - "He's Doing His Part. Are You?"

Ads have also recently appeared for the Northern Strike booster pack, displaying pictures like those of the Goliath, with a tag line of "A soldier's best friend", and PAC propaganda posters with the faction flag and a line reading "Европа завоёвана!" ("Europe is conquered!"), in Russian. In the UK, ads consist almost entirely of ads for Intel Core 2 Duo which states "Battle-Tested" and EA's own Northern Strike.
