Berea is a city located in Madison County, Kentucky. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 9,851. Its most prominent institution is Berea College, which owns a substantial percentage of the city's land.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 24.2 km² (9.4 mi²). 24.2 km² (9.3 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.32% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 9,851 people, 3,693 households, and 2,426 families residing in the city. The population density is 407.7/km² (1,055.4/mi²). There are 4,115 housing units at an average density of 170.3/km² (440.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 92.44% White, 4.30% African American, 0.37% Native American, 0.87% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.48% from other races, and 1.53% from two or more races. 0.99% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 3,693 households out of which 32.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.1% are married couples living together, 12.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.3% are non-families. 29.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.34 and the average family size is 2.88.

In the city the population is spread out with 21.6% under the age of 18, 20.5% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 19.5% from 45 to 64, and 12.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 30 years. For every 100 females there are 83.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 77.2 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $30,480, and the median income for a family is $35,505. Males have a median income of $29,763 versus $22,102 for females. The per capita income for the city is $15,025. 17.5% of the population and 14.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 21.1% of those under the age of 18 and 12.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
