New Castle is a town located in Westchester County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 17,491.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 60.7 km² (23.5 mi²). 60.0 km² (23.2 mi²) of it is land and 0.7 km² (0.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.15% water. New Castle is bordered by Mount Pleasant to the southwest and North Caslte to the southeast. It is bordered by Bedford, Mount Kisco, and Somers to the northeast and Yorktown and Cortlandt to the northwest.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 17,491 people, 5,732 households, and 4,929 families residing in the town. The population density is 291.5/km² (754.8/mi²). There are 5,843 housing units at an average density of 97.4/km² (252.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 91.50% White, 1.37% African American, 0.05% Native American, 5.55% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.51% from other races, and 1.00% from two or more races. 2.78% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 5,732 households out of which 49.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 79.0% are married couples living together, 5.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 14.0% are non-families. 11.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 4.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.04 and the average family size is 3.28.

In the town the population is spread out with 31.9% under the age of 18, 3.6% from 18 to 24, 25.4% from 25 to 44, 29.9% from 45 to 64, and 9.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 97.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.2 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $159,691, and the median income for a family is $174,579. Males have a median income of $100,000 versus $67,275 for females. The per capita income for the town is $73,888. 3.5% of the population and 2.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 4.6% of those under the age of 18 and 3.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Communities and Locations in New Castle

  • Chappaqua is the largest hamlet of New Castle. Its center is located in the southeastern part of the town, but most of the town falls under Chappaqua's ZIP Code.
  • Millwood is another hamlet of New Castle, located in the northwest part of the town.
  • Tompkins Corners is a community located between Chappaqua and Millwood at the Junction of NY Route 120 and NY Route 133.
