Mayhew Prize
The Mayhew Prize is a prize awarded anually by the Faculty of Mathematics, University of Cambridge to the student from DAMTP (applied mathematics and theoretical physics) showing the greatest distinction in the Part III examinations. It should be noted that this includes only about half of all students taking the Part III examinations since the rest are registered with DPMMS (pure mathematics and statistics), and so the winner of the Mayhew Prize is not necessarily the senior wrangler of the Part III examinations. Currently there exists no equivalent prize on the pure side.
Notable winners of the Mayhew Prize include Fred Hoyle (1936), Sir John Currie Gunn (1939), Keith Stewartson (1947), and Bernard Silverman (1974). The most recent winners were Chris Cawthorn (2006) and Steffen Gielen (2007).
