Gymnastics at the 1976 Summer Olympics was represented by 14 events: 6 for women and 8 for men. All the events were held at the Montreal Forum from July 18 to July 23.

The new rule was introduced both for men's and women's events: not more than three competitors per country were allowed to enter the all-around finals, if qualified [1]. This was a controversial decision, which prevented many gymnasts of strong teams (like the USSR) from competing in the event. The scoring and judging systems were basically the same as at the previous Olympics.
