CKSH-TV is a television station in Sherbrooke, Quebec. Owned and operated by TQS, it is a private affiliate of Radio-Canada.
The station first aired on September 19, 1974. Although a privately owned station, CKSH basically functions as a semi-satellite of CBFT in Montreal due to not having alternative non-network sources of programming available. The station had been owned directly by Cogeco prior to the latter's majority acquisition of TQS, to which Cogeco contributed its existing local stations. The CBC took editorial control of the station's news programming in 2002, although it currently shares a studio with TQS O&O CFKS-TV.
CKSH is seen on cable television systems throughout New England, serving the French American community. Its initial placement on the cable television system of Lowell, Massachusetts was the result of a long fight by leaders of the community in that city. It remains on the Comcast system on Channel 98. It serves as a vital link to the Québécois culture in these communities.
In September 2007, the CBC announced that it will not renew its affiliation agreement with its TQS-owned affiliates after their current agreement expires in August 2008. It is not yet known whether the public broadcaster will acquire these stations itself, or open new stations to replace them; either way, it is unlikely CKSH could continue to operate separately given the scarcity of other programming sources. The CRTC must approve the disaffiliation no matter what form it ultimately takes.
