Mohsen Namjoo

Mohsen Namjoo, Template:PerB, is an Iranian singer-songwriter, author, musician, and setar player. He was born in 1976 at Torbat-e Jam, a small town in the northeastern of Iran.

Biography

Mohsen Namjoo was born in Torbate-Jam, northern part of Khorasan, northeast of Iran, in a traditional family, and raised in the religious city of Mashhad. Namjoo's passion for music and literature started since early childhood. He used to sing the Qur'an in school and participate seriously in art and performances. At the age of 12, after the death of his father, his mother and older brothers decided to send him to music classes in order to learn traditional music as a hobby. He was taking traditional vocal and music lessons from Professor Nasrollah Nassehpour. Contrary to the wishes of his family, Namjoo decided to take on music as career and move to Tehran to study Music at the University of Tehran. In order to qualify for musical studies in the university Namjoo needed to learn to play an instrument. Because of his poor financial situation he chose the “Setar”. Setar is a traditional Iranian string instrument.

Namjoo was admmitted to the University of Tehran, in 1994, being offered to study in two different graduate programs: theatre, or music. Due to some changes at the University of Tehran, the music program was going to start one year later. So Namjoo decided to join the theater course. During this time he started to understand more about drama and applied it to some of his ideas. In 1995 he joined the music course, but soon he realized that the music studies were not as he had imagined. He was not satisfied with the classical teaching system of the university. He had also finished the classical traditional modes of Iranian music already. Namjoo was ready to experiment with the Iranian music in order to make something different and modern. His ideas were not accepted by no means and he faced many difficulties.

Finally in the third year he was forced to leave because of his ideas and the way he liked to use Iranian traditional music and singing methods. After leaving the university he had three concerts in Farabi Hall of the arts university (Tehran) during 1997 till 1999 which were called “performances of vocal music”. Since 2000 he started to notice and learn more about rock and jazz music, and came up with the idea of fusion and mixing these kind of music together with traditional Iranian music. The results of these experiences are the tracks which some of them are only etudes and some are recorded with the possibilities he found over short period of time because of lack of money or other difficulties. Some of these tracks have been copied illegally and heard by many people in Iran. In 2006 he hold few private concerts and then he was selected to perform in Tehran Hotspot at the international film festival Rotterdam. This was a memorable event that he really enjoyed. Though he had to play Solo, it was well received. One of his tracks was also broadcasted by NPS radio together with a short interview.
