"Love Will Never Do (Without You)" is the seventh single (final in the U.S.) from American R&B/pop singer Janet Jackson's fourth studio album, Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation 1814 (1989). It topped the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 for one week.

History

The song became well known for its "love-will-conquer-all" theme. It became the turning point in Jackson's career as she entered the next phase of her music career with her next album. The song became her fourth number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and became the final of seven top five singles from Jackson's Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation 1814 album, making her the first and only artist to achieve that number.

Jackson, in an effort to take a turn with her image, decided to shoot a sexy video with photographer Herb Ritts for "Love Will Never Do (Without You)". Originally Jackson wanted to wear a dress for the video, but Ritts envisioned Jackson in nothing more than a black top and a pair of jeans. On the Design of a Decade 1986/1996 DVD, there is a black-and-white and colorized version of the video. Jackson won a MTV Video Music Award for "Best Female Video" and was nominated for "Best Choreography" and "Best Art Direction" in 1991. The video ranked thirteen on Rolling Stone's "The 100 Top Music Videos", seventy-two on VH1's "100 Greatest Videos", and eighty-eight on MTV's: "100 Greatest Videos Ever Made". The video shows a young Djimon Hounsou, then a fashion model. He is now an actor who starred Blood Diamond. On April 27, 2007, the video was made available on iTunes.
