Chris is a character from SNK Playmore's King of Fighters series of fighting games.
History
The true origins of the Orochi fighter known as Chris are shrouded in mystery. He, along with Yashiro Nanakase and Shermie, entered the KOF 97' tournament. They formed the "New Face" team and proceeded to crush any and all challengers. Later on in the tournament, it was shown that he and his team members were three of Orochi's "Four Heavenly Kings", the first being Goenitz. Their plan for entering the tournament was to gather enough power to awaken the Orochi power from its 600 year slumber. After gathering enough energy, Shermie and the rest of the New Face Team poured it all into Chris, who uses it to make a startling transformation into the original Orochi--its essence had been instilled into Chris by Goenitz after Maki Kagura's death. However, the resurrection was interrupted by Kyo Kusanagi and Iori Yagami. Kyo proceeds to engage the Orochi in battle, but is blown away by his phenomenal power. Iori Yagami, and later Chizuru Kagura reunite with him in the fight, and the tables begin to turn. Realizing his defeat was near, The Orochi used the last of his power to transform Iori into Orochi Iori. Believing his transformation would turn him against his teammates, The Orochi chuckled in triumph... until Iori grabbed him instead. Now, holding the Orochi in place, Iori told Kyo to finish him off. Kyo did so, then Chizuru sealed the Orochi up. The Orochi fighters and Chris, however, were never seen again.
Orochi Chris
- Orochi Chris is an alternate version of Chris, possessed by one of the Heavenly Kings of Orochi. His normal and throw moves remain exactly the same, but his special/supers are completely different.
- Orochi Chris is the 'awakened' form of Chris and is playable in all the KOF Chris has appeared in. In KOFs 97 and 98 he would stand with his hands at his waist, and flames would appear on both his hands. In KOF 2002, Orochi Chris' stance was changed to look more menacing with him sort of hunched over, looking at the floor, hands "clawed", with flames emanating from them occasionally.
- In KOF 2002 and King of Fighters Neowave, Chris' HSDM has him transform into Orochi Chris.
- Orochi Chris' real title is "Chris of the Flames of Destiny" (Which is also the name of Chris' HSDM in KOF 2002 and NeoWave), but is referred as Orochi Chris for short. In King of Fighters 1997, this makes him a counterpart for Kyo Kusanagi. His title is a reference to the similarly-titled opening theme song of the anime Armored Trooper Votoms, Honoo no Sadame (Destiny of Fire). [1]
- This counterpart theory is further evidenced by his possession of Kyo's DM Ura 108 Shiki: Orochinagi as Ankoku Orochinagi.
- Due to improper zoning, Orochi Chris's Sun-Piercing Blaze will strangely miss an opponent standing right in front of him.
- Orochi Chris' HDM in KOF '02 and NeoWave has him transform into the boss Orochi and perform his DM Sanagi wo Yaburi, Chou wa Maou, then revert back to Orochi Chris. Though this technique covers the entire screen, it does more damage/hits based on the opponents proximity to him.
- Originally, the flames of Orochi Chris were going to be black, but the designers changed them to purple because the black flames were hard to see.
- Orochi Chris theme song is titled Mad Fantasy in KOF 98 which appears to suit his childish appearance.
