Wikipedia Day Awards
Hello, all. It was initially my hope to try to have this done as part of Esperanza's proposal for an appreciation week to end on Wikipedia Day, January 15. However, several people have once again proposed the entirety of Esperanza for deletion, so that might not work. It was the intention of the Appreciation Week proposal to set aside a given time when the various individuals who have made significant, valuable contributions to the encyclopedia would be recognized and honored. I believe that, with some effort, this could still be done. My proposal is to, with luck, try to organize the various WikiProjects and other entities of wikipedia to take part in a larger celebrartion of its contributors to take place in January, probably beginning January 15, 2007. I have created yet another new subpage for myself (a weakness of mine, I'm afraid) at User talk:Badbilltucker/Appreciation Week where I would greatly appreciate any indications from the members of this project as to whether and how they might be willing and/or able to assist in recognizing the contributions of our editors. Thank you for your attention. Badbilltucker 20:41, 29 December 2006 (UTC)
Kindly contribute to this article when you get time, and request others too.
Thanks

Nyaniponika Mahathera
Does anyone know where the temple of Nyaniponika Mahathera is? It is mentioned in the article Georg Schafer. — Sebastian 07:59, 3 April 2007 (UTC)
- Yes. Mahathera means the great thero or the great monk. Here's some info about him.[1][2] --♪♫ ĽąĦĩŘǔ ♫♪ walkie-talkie 08:17, 3 April 2007 (UTC)
- I see. I had thought it was a place name! I just found that we already have an article on him: Nyanaponika Thera. Maybe that was his earlier name? Or maybe he was just modest and that's what he called himself? Anyway, I'll make a redirect and add "Mahathera" to the existing article. — Sebastian 18:55, 3 April 2007 (UTC)
Rajapaksha College
A newbie has created an article for Rajapaksha College, but it's written entirely in Sinhala (at least I think it's Sinhala). I'm hoping someone here can help out with the translation. Wl219 23:48, 4 April 2007 (UTC)
- Done. Thanks for bringing it to our notice Wl219. I also copied the Sinhalese text to the Sinhalese Wikipedia here. --snowolfD4( talk / @ ) 01:28, 5 April 2007 (UTC)
Bilateral relations discussion
I would like to invite you all to participate in a discussion at this thread regarding bilateral relations between two countries. All articles related to foreign relations between countries are now under the scope of WikiProject Foreign relations, a newly created project. We hope that the discussion will result in a more clean and organized way of explaining such relationships. Thank you. Ed ¿Cómo estás? 18:10, 8 April 2007 (UTC)
South Asian countries as a Wikipedia:Featured topic
The South Asian WikiProjects have been tremendously productive, which I congratulate you for, and I just wanted to let you know that we're very close to meeting the criteria for a Featured topic covering the countries of the region. Please see Wikipedia talk:Featured topics#Great potential for South Asian countries featured topic. Thanks.--Pharos 03:58, 22 May 2007 (UTC)
Infobox for Towns and villages of Sri Lanka
I think it is a good time for us to come up with a infobox specialized for Sri Lankan towns and vilages.Template in Tamil Wikipedia, an example in Ratnapura page. I don't know weather we have a infobox in English wiki.--Terrance 13:03, 13 June 2007 (UTC)
- We can shrink this one and turn it into the Sri Lankan version, isn't it. --♪♫ ĽąĦĩŘǔ ♫♪ walkie-talkie 16:03, 13 June 2007 (UTC)
- Yeah good idea. We can get rid of all the fields we don't need, and add stuff like district and province. Do we have a good (big and clear) map of Sri Lanka to display the location on? --snowolfD4( talk / @ ) 17:59, 13 June 2007 (UTC)
- Image:Gislanka locator.svg is in the commons and and it is very clear. it has the coordinates needed fpr the locator. I have written/modified the code needed for the locator.

Please see this discussion on my talk page for reinforcement that the idea of an infobox would be useful, especially to link together the towns and/or villages in each province or district, keeping them off the orphan page, and allowing interested readers to navigate more easily between articles. I have no idea how to make such an infobox, but you seem to be on the right track here. Keep up the good work. :) ≈≈Carolfrog≈≈♦тос♦ 04:34, 11 July 2007 (UTC)

No localised infobox is necessarily needed. This example on the left is a completely normal Infobox City. The only thing I did was to create a location map for Sri Lanka (you can found it here). Of course the location map can also (relatively) cleanly be used directly, an example is on the left. There are few more possible parameters, the documentation for the location maps is here. Whether the map used in the location map is the best possible to use is another matter... or whether it is even correctly used in the examples (I think it's ok, but I'm often wrong :D). In any case it can very easily be replaced by any equirectangular map, and such change is completely invisible in wikicode at article level. Cheers, – Sadalmelik 21:30, 24 July 2007 (UTC)
Looks great. Nice stuff Sadalmelik. And the location of Kandy looks to be okay. I wouldn't mind a slightly better map though. This one is a little too green in my opinion. Just came across this map Image:Karnataka locator map.svg which looks a lot better. Anyone who could edit svg files want to try improving the one we have now? --snowolfD4 ( talk / @ ) 17:56, 25 July 2007 (UTC)
- I could do some experimenting during the weekend to see whether I could improve it – I have not use Inkscape much, though. I would also like to make the districts more visible, either by thickening the lines, or using colours. Perhaps using different bluish colours for districts in one province and greenish colours in another province might make the districts more visible and still keep the provinces easily identifiable. – Sadalmelik 09:25, 26 July 2007 (UTC)
- How's this modified version? Colours are a lot lighter, so the text should be visible, and districts are more prominent. District capitals, roads and rivers are too difficult to add to the svg file... the original creator of the file could do it quite easily, though. I could do it myself, but I don't have district borders in the format the map making software I have used would be able to read. – Sadalmelik 19:59, 29 July 2007 (UTC)
Old Sinhala Place Names of Sri Lankan cities
In regard to the info box project: "Infobox for Towns and villages of Sri Lanka" I suggest that you may find it interesting to take a look at the wepages http://www.geocities.com/place.names/barelist.htm http://www.geocities.com/place.names/index.html and the maps given by them. They have been researched by a number of distinguished Sri lankan academics; much of the work is in relation to the Tamil place named in the East and the North. I have used info from that website and included them in many of the articles, including in Killinochchi, in the article on place names Bodhi dhana 04:02, 29 September 2007 (UTC)bodhi_dhana

Please add Sinhalese text to the articles below
Sinhala Slangs
Please, help to save the Sinhala Slang article. Please give our thoughts at Delete Talk Page. I beleive referances can be found and will be included in the article. Scholarly articles on Sinhala language is anyway rare on the net, and I do not agree on making it an excuse to delete the article. The native speakers of Sinhala knows that this is an accurate list of Sinhala slang. The only reason that I can think of that a native speaker of Sinhala opposes this article, is the awakwardness of seeing Sinhala profanity in print (which they are not used to), If the offending section is only the profanity, perhaps we should get rid of only that section. I also have doubts why Sri Lankan Tamil slang has only recived an warning and not recomended for deletion. The article Sri Lankan Tamil slang does not have any more referances than Sinhala Slang, and only differance is that it is not being honest about it in "Referances" section like Sinhala Slang. Citations and ISBNs
The article Sri Lanka Army and some 20 other pages[1] cite a book with a bad ISBN 995-8089-02-8. The correct one should be ISBN 955-8089-02-8. I could go through them and correct the ISBN, but perhaps something else needs to be checked as well? Is this a good book and edition to cite? Should "Sri Lanka Army" really be specified as the author? How do you typically handle errors of this kind in this WikiProject? Do you maintain a list of standard literature, and would this book be on that list? After all, it's cited in 20 articles. --LA2 10:53, 11 October 2007 (UTC)

- As the editor who cited this book in Wikipedia, here I am to answer to your questions :-) For my ease I will answer to your questions by splitting your query into parts.
- What you are talking is not clear to me. The ISBN is ok and there is no problem (even you too are repeating the same number). If you have any doubt about the ISBN pls check this page.
- Yes it's a good reputated book which was used by many number of researchers and scholars to cite the history and other stuff of the Sri Lanka Army.
- This book is a result of a team work of number of retired and some senior army officers. This team interviewed each army commander to cover each era of the army. If you want I can give all the names of these team members as well.
- I do not see any problem there.
- No we don't maintain any list. Cheers --♪♫ ĽąĦĩŘǔ ♫♪ walkie-talkie | tool box 14:17, 11 October 2007 (UTC)
- Yeah both ISBN numbers you gave appear to be the same. Can you please clarify that? --snowolfD4 ( talk / @ ) 14:24, 11 October 2007 (UTC)
- LA2, The book is on top of my lap right now and I can confirm that the ISBN is 955-8089-02-8. --♪♫ ĽąĦĩŘǔ ♫♪ walkie-talkie | tool box 14:56, 11 October 2007 (UTC)
- The prefix 995- should be corrected to 955-. There is just one digit wrong, and that's easy to overlook. But if you click the bad ISBN and then "Find this book at Worldcat", you will find nothing. With the good ISBN, you will find information about this book. --LA2 21:16, 11 October 2007 (UTC)
- Haha yeah, I can't believe I missed that. Thanks for pointing it out LA. We don't have much participation in this project, just two or three regular editors, do you have any suggestions how to create such a listing or handle such errors? --snowolfD4 ( talk / @ ) 21:24, 11 October 2007 (UTC)
