Music

Bands/Artists/Composers

Ayreon
Ayreon is a project by Dutch composer and musician Arjen Anthony Lucassen. Ayreon's musical style derives mostly from heavy metal and progressive rock, but combines them with genres like folk, classical and electronica to form what some call a completely new style of music. The majority of Ayreon's albums are dubbed rock operas" due to the fact that the albums contain complex storylines featuring a host of characters, each represented by a unique vocalist.
Dream Theater
Dream Theater is a progressive metal band formed by three students at the Berklee College of Music in 1985. In the 22 years since their inception, they have become one of the most commercially successful progressive bands since the height of progressive rock in the mid-1970s, despite being relatively unknown in mainstream pop/rock circles. The band is well known for the technical proficiency of each instrumentalist, winning many awards from music magazines. They are highly respected by many of rock and metal's biggest names, leading to collaborations between Dream Theater members and many other well known musicians.
Current lineup:
James LaBrie: lead vocals
John Myung: bass, Chapman stick
John Petrucci: guitars, backing vocals
Mike Portnoy: drums, percussion, backing vocals
Jordan Rudess: keyboards, Continuum, lap steel guitar
Johann Sebastian Bach
Johann Sebastian Bach was a prolific German composer and organist whose sacred and secular works for choir, orchestra and solo instruments drew together the strands of the Baroque period and brought it to its ultimate maturity. Although he introduced no new forms, he enriched the prevailing German style with a robust contrapuntal technique, a control of harmonic and motivic organisation from the smallest to the largest scales, and the adaptation of rhythms and textures from abroad, particularly Italy and France. He is regarded as one of the greatest composers of all time.
Pink Floyd
Pink Floyd is an English rock band that initially earned recognition for their psychedelic rock music, and, as they evolved, for their progressive rock music. They are known for philosophical lyrics, sonic experimentation, innovative cover art, and elaborate live shows. One of rock music's most successful acts, the group has sold over 200 million albums worldwide and an estimated 73.5 million albums in the United States alone.
Main lineup:
David Gilmour: guitar, lead vocals
Nick Mason: drums, percussion
Roger Waters: bass, lead vocals
Rick Wright: keyboards, backing vocals
Queen
Queen is a seminal English rock band, formed in 1970 in London by Brian May, Freddie Mercury, and Roger Taylor, with John Deacon joining the following year. Britain's most successful band of the past three decades, the band rose to prominence during the 1970s and still retain a large international fan base. The band is noted for their musical diversity, lush multi-layered arrangements, vocal harmonies and incorporation of audience participation into their live performances. They are regarded as one of the most accomplished acts both in the studio and on stage.
Main lineup:
Brian May: lead vocals
John Deacon: bass, Chapman stick
Freddie Mercury: guitars, backing vocals
Roger Taylor: drums, percussion, backing vocals
Ray Charles
Ray Charles was the stage name of Ray Charles Robinson. He was a pioneering American pianist and soul musician who shaped the sound of rhythm and blues. He brought a soulful sound to country music, pop standards, and a rendition of "America the Beautiful" that Ed Bradley of 60 Minutes called the "definitive version of the song, an American anthem — a classic, just as the man who sang it."
Symphony X
Symphony X is an American progressive metal band from New Jersey founded in 1994. Musically, They are similar to other progressive metal bands to which they are commonly compared, such as Dream Theater and Fates Warning. Symphony X plays in a syncopated, progressive fashion, while incorporating elements of symphonic metal and power metal into their sound. Their music also contains strong neo-classical elements reminescent of Yngwie Malmsteen, Randy Rhoads, and other neo-classical metal artists.
Current lineup:
Russell Allen: lead vocals
Michael Lepond: bass
Michael Pinnella: keyboards, backing vocals
Michael Romeo: guitars, backing vocals
Jason Rullo: drums, percussion

Songs

Disappear
Song by Dream Theater
from the album Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
Music by Dream Theater
Lyrics by James LaBrie

Why, tell me the reasons why
Try, still I don't understand
Will I ever feel this again
Blue sky, I'll meet you in the end
Free them, free the memories of you
Free me, and rest 'til I'm with you

A day like today
My whole world has been changed
Nothing you say
Will help ease my pain

Turn, I'll turn this slowly round
Burn, burn to feel alive again
She, she'd want me to move on
See me, this place I still belong
Give chase, to find more than I have found
And face, this time now on my own

Days disappear
And my world keeps changing
I feel you here
And it keeps me sane

So I'm moving on
I'll never forget
As you lay there and watched me
Accepting the end
I knew you were scared
You were strong, I was trying
I gave you my hand
I said it's okay letting go time to leave here
And I'll carry on
The best that I can without you here beside me
Let him come take you home

Do I Make You Proud
Song by Taylor Hicks
from the album Taylor Hicks

I've never been the one to raise my hand
That was not me and now that's who I am
Because of you I am standing tall
My heart is full of endless gratitude
You were the one, the one to guide me through
Now I can see and I believe it's only just beginning

This what we dream about
But the only question with me now
Is do I make you proud
Stronger than I've ever been now
Never been afraid of standing out
But do I make you proud

I guess I've learned, to question is to grow
That you still have faith, is all I need to know
I've learned to love, myself in spite of me
And I've learned to walk, the road that I believe

This what we dream about
but the only question with me now
Is do I make you proud
Stronger than I've ever been now
Never been afraid of standing out
But do I make you proud

Everybody needs to rise up
Everybody needs to be loved
To be loved

This what we dream about
But the only question with me now
Is do I make you proud
Stronger than I've ever been now
Never been afraid of standing out
But do I make you proud

Do I make you proud?
Do I make you proud?

Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding
Song by Elton John
from the album Goodbye Yellow Brick Road
Music by Elton John
Lyrics by Bernie Taupin
Funeral for a Friend
instrumental
Love Lies Bleeding

The roses in the window box
Have tilted to one side
Everything about this house
Was born to grow and die

Oh it doesn't seem a year ago
To this very day
You said I'm sorry honey
If I don't change the pace
I can't face another day

And love lies bleeding in my hand
Oh it kills me to think of you with another man
I was playing rock and roll and you were just a fan
But my guitar couldn't hold you
So I split the band
Love lies bleeding in my hands

I wonder if those changes
Have left a scar on you
Like all the burning hoops of fire
That you and I passed through

You're a bluebird on a telegraph line
I hope you're happy now
Well if the wind of change comes down your way girl
You'll make it back somehow

Of Sins and Shadows
Song by Symphony X
from the album The Divine Wings of Tragedy
Music by Michael Pinnella and Michael Romeo
Lyrics by Thomas Miller

Passing through the void
The darkest grand illusion
Chaos is riding on the wind

Destroyed in agony
They create a maddened lair
Summon all to heed their cry

Innocence fading away
- the dying eyes of prey

Desperate cries, hail of fire deciding
All our fate in the night
Tempt in sin, shadows then begin to
Gather the souls they hold within

Victims of desire
Pestilence of their invasion
Forms then take on evil waves

Paralyze, victimize
The shadows fall and enter fast
from the sky - (from the sky)
Summon all to heed their cry

Innocence fading away
- the dying eyes of the prey

Desperate cries, hail of fire deciding
All our fate in the night
Tempt in sin, shadows then begin to
Gather the souls they hold within

I've betrayed - slowly fade
I repent my inner plea
I've denied - sanctified
Cannot hide form this monstrosity

I'm immersed in a curse
Of this jaded imagery
Realize that your cries
Only jeopardize this legacy

Desperate cries, hail of fire deciding
All our fate in the night
Tempt in sin, shadows then begin to
Gather the souls they hold within

The Mission
Song by Van Canto
from the album A Storm to Come

For years and years we waited
And now the time has come
To leave these barren lands
Towards (new) horizons

No matter what has happened
And what was said or done
Words are to be to forgotten
We will roam on!

We cross the gates of darkness
Into the black of night
We don’t fear anybody:
(We) got the second sight

We move a little further
Towards the borderline
Before the dawn of day
Our souls come back to life
And life comes back again

The mission’s to fight to be free again
To stand our ground and to be immortal
This is our mission so here we stand
We have the right to be ourselves again
The mission’s to fight to be free again

They held us down for so long
Our backs against the wall
We didn’t see a future
Did not hear the call

But now that things have changed
Now that our fears are small
We create a vision
(And we) face it - one for all

We cross the gates of darkness
Into the black of night
We don’t fear anybody:
(We) got the second sight

We move a little further
Towards the borderline
Before the dawn of day
Our souls come back to life
And all I see, in front of me
Every step I take is bringing me closer to me!

All that we are is everything we’ve ever been
And what we’ll be is what we are

Day Twelve: Trauma
Song by Ayreon
from the album The Human Equation
Music by Arjen Lucassen
Lyrics by Arjen Lucassen

[Reason] Think hard, you are lying here in a hospital bed
Disregard the emotions inside your head
Concentrate on the real world beyond your mind
It's not to late to leave your burdens behind

[Fear] We won't let you go
Take you down below
Dark crypts of your soul
Locked inside your head...
You're better off dead

[Agony] Locked away, she lives in isolation
It's been that way, since he has gone
She been through life of deprivation
She depends on you, her only son

[Passion] She won't let you go
Keep you down below
Dark crypts of your soul
Locked inside your head
You're better off dead

[Agony] Where are you, can't you hear her calling?
Nothing you can do, you have no time
There is no one there, to catch her now she's falling
Why should you care, you are doing fine

[Passion] She won't let you go
Keep you down below
Dark crypts of your soul
Locked inside your head
You're better of dead

[Reason] Now she's at rest, she finally found her peace
There's no need to blame yourself
You must let go, or the pain will never cease
It's time to crawl out of your shell

Your mother died, the day your father left
A part of you died as well
Feelings of guilt will haunt you 'til the end
You must fight hard to break this spell

But it hurts...

[Fear] You hear her voice, from beyond her grave
"Where were you son, when I needed you
Is this your thanks for all the warmth I gave
Did you forget what I been through?"

You hear his voice, cold and merciless
"You worthless fool, you let her die!"
And deep within yourself, you must confess
Your ways cannot be justified

[Pride] By now you realized, you have to be
relentless to survive
Repress your memories,
bury all emotions and thrive!
It's your life!

[Reason] Now she's at rest, she found her peace
[Fear] You hear her voice, from the grave
[Reason] You must let go or the pain won't cease
[Fear] "Is this your thanks for all I gave"
[Reason] A part of you died as well
[Fear] "You worthless fool, you let her die"
[Reason] It's time to crawl out of your shell
[Fear] Your ways cannot be justified

[Pride] By now you realized, you have to be
relentless to survive
Repress your memories,
bury all emotions and thrive!
It's your life!

Wait for Sleep
Song by Dream Theater
from the album Images and Words
Music by Kevin Moore
Lyrics by Kevin Moore

Standing by the window
Eyes upon the moon
Hoping that the memory
Will leave her spirit soon

She shuts the doors and lights
And lays her body on the bed
Where images and words are running deep
She has too much pride to pull the sheets above her head
So quietly she lays and waits for sleep

She stares at the ceiling
And tries not to think
And pictures the chains
She's been trying to link again
But the feeling is gone

And water can't cover her memory
And ashes can't answer her pain
God give me the power to take breath from a breeze
And call life from a cold metal frame

In with the ashes
Or up with the smoke from the fire
With wings up in heaven
Or here, lying in bed
Palm of her hand to my head
Now and forever curled in my heart
And the heart of the world

Notes

  1. ^ The title and subtitle for this song might be inverted, since some sources show otherwise. I'll have the definition for this when my copy of the album arrives.
  2. ^ Scenes are grouped into two acts: Act 1 is comprised of scenes One to Five, and scenes Six to Nine form Act 2.
  3. ^ a b c On the album, lengths apply to scenes instead of songs. For multisong scenes, lengths are listed as follows:
    • Scene Two (8:49)
    • Scene Three (7:51)
    • Scene Seven (10:00)
  4. ^ a b c d e Between some pairs of songs, a transition, counted as negative time prior to the second song, occurs. Here, this transition is considered as an extension of the first song, therefore some of these lengths differ from the ones listed on the album. These are the tracks in which this applies and the listed length for each of them:
    • The Root of All Evil (8:07)
    • The Answer Lies Within (5:26)
    • These Walls (6:59)
    • Panic Attack (7:16)
    • Never Enough (6:33)
