Grim Reaper is a fictional character from the television series The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy. He is the Grim Reaper, the personification of Death, here portrayed as a scythe-wielding skeleton in a black hooded robe. His accent and use of patois suggest that he is Jamaican, although in an episode where it showed his living form he was portrayed as a dark haired Caucasian.
Personality
He is thousands of years old, as he was a child at the time of the Neanderthals (Though his history is debatable, as he is also depicted as a teenager during the late Jurassic period). In his first story from his youth, it was stated that he never wanted to become the Grim Reaper, but was forced to by his parents, he originally wanted to become a singer. In his second story, it is quite the opposite. His father wanted him to become a singer, but he didn't like singing. One day, he stumbled upon a scythe, and realized that he had a knack for reaping, and therefore became "The Grim Reaper". In the movie "Wrath of the Spider Queen" he wins the position in a school election. He often brings up traumatic experiences from his youth, as well as the lessons he had learned from them, such as losing a crucial baseball game (The Bad News Ghouls), being bullied (Billy and the Bully, Bully Boogie), and failing to live up to his parents' expectations (A Grim Prophecy) when he grew up he became the king of the Underworld. But on one fateful day, by losing a bet to the two children, Billy and Mandy, he is forced to be their "best friend" (effectively, their slave), a task he suffers with no small amount of disdain and mockery from other supernatural creatures. He now lives with Billy and Mandy in their hometown of Endsville, hoping that he will break free from the servitude.
Grim likes all kinds of chaos, despair, and torture (except his own), martial arts activities (he attends a children's kung-fu class in The Taking Tree), playing rock and roll (Battle of the Bands), and many other dark things. He especially enjoys Billy's torture, as Billy often annoys him. He expresses his enjoyment of other people's pain by laughing, from a deep evil laugh to screaming like a girl, and he often can start laughing in the most inappropriate situations. But besides his very morbid sense of humour and odd dark antics, he can behave like any other normal man. Reaping is only a job, and he says that it's a hard one. In several episodes Grim was "working" (reaping), but Billy and/or Mandy always appear and distract him right before he is about to reap.
He needed some time to adapt to a new life, but now he watches television (on several occasions, that is), films, can use the internet (The Secret Snake Club) and play video games, eat fast food (The Love That Dare Not Speak It's Name) and ice cream (Chocolate Sailor), and do many other "normal" things. On rare occasions, Grim can even behave effeminately, wearing a dress in pink, sniffing and picking flowers. He was a big fan of "My Troubled Pony", a cross between soap operas and My Little Pony (The Schlubs), and wanted to become a supermodel (Look Alive!).
Relationship with Billy and Mandy
Grim dislikes the servitude he has been placed in, constantly complaining about being forced to endure tasks including chores, homework and other errands. Grim has been verbally and physically abused by Billy and Mandy many times, often being forced to put up with them as they treat him almost like a toy or pet. Grim can become fed up with Mandy because she treats him as a slave and shows little respect for him. However, there clearly there is a small, but grudging respect between her and him, especially for her intelligent nature. Mandy is very abusive. However, Billy can also irritate him at times because of his idiocy and stupidity, using Grim for the most stupid of tasks.
Mandy insults him frequently, calling him "bonehead" and forces him to carry out her wishes, often reminding him that she "owns him" (for example, in The Secret Snake Club, she rented out him and his powers for 20 dollars per hour). She exhibits a generally cold and apathetic attitude towards both Grim and Billy. However, she has shown on some occassions that she does care for them (for example in Night of the Living Grim, she showed great concern for Grim's welfare). On the other hand, Billy's antics and his extreme stupidity can annoy Grim to a large extent, including once selling his Scythe for a "crummy smashed amusement park penny,". Billy tends to treat him better than Mandy does, however, respecting him more and seeing him almost like an older brother.
Grim must often fix disasters they have created, rescuing them from serious situations. He is made to use his powers in the most ridiculous situations and purposes (for example, making a burrito talk or turning Billy into a spring-green squeaking yogurt-shooting superhero), just to make them stop bothering him - at least for a while.
Grim's reputation has diminished since he met Billy and Mandy. There are many incidents where Billy and Mandy mock him; for example, in the episode Recipe for Disaster, Grim was dressed up as a girl scout and was selling cookies from door to door. They publicly humiliated him on his own talk show (The Grim Show) and he was even beaten up by Billy's mom (Grim Vs. Mom, despite the fact that they put him back together).
Grim often feels unappreciated. As a result, his attitude toward them varies - he sometimes likes to be with Billy as they can have fun together (Just the Two of Pus) and they have at least once united against Mandy bossing them around (Sickly Sweet). On the whole, Grim views them equally for their different qualities, one balancing out the other.
Despite the loss of his once wide and feared popularity, it seems that his mood changes slightly each episode as he adapts to a new life. Grim sometimes takes the role of a parent or older sibling. (In Circus of Fear, Grim shouts "Hey hunnies, I'm home!" to them in an affectionate way.) In several situations, he has chosen his friendship with them over his own freedom and, by his own choice, rescued Billy and Mandy from danger. (In Fiend Is Like Friend Without "R", Nergal kidnapped Billy and Mandy because he was lonely and wanted friends. Grim's first thought, logically, was to leave them behind, but he found himself coming back to save them and confronted Nergal. In Scythe 2.0., Grim's "modernized" scythe was tired of doing chores and wanted to reap Billy and Mandy, but Grim came with his old scythe (and "doom-buggy"), once again rescuing them. Grim excuses this as a matter of principle: he says that if anybody is going to reap Billy and Mandy, it is going to be him.
In several situations, Grim has actually offered to help the children purely out of his own volition to do so. This shows that as his time with them has progressed, his relationship with the children has changed vastly and he may even feel he has a duty of care to them - even to the point of viewing them as real friends. Grim's relationship with the two undoubtedly swings between merely tolerating them to genuinely wanting to be with and caring for them and sometimes causing conflicts between his sadistic, dark personality and the bond between himself and Billy and Mandy.
Their relationship has become widely accepted by fans, and was covered in Bleedman's popular, non-canonical "Grim Tales From Down Below" fan comic.
Grim's supernatural items
Scythe
Being "an epic and ancient tool filled with terrible magics beyond mortal understanding" as the Boogey Man described it, Grim's powers derives from his Scythe, the traditional implement of the Grim Reaper. It is somewhere between a prop and a character. Grim sometimes addresses the scythe as "Jody" and treats it as something of a pet, although it rarely displays any self-directed activity. He uses it for reaping, but it also serves as a combination magic wand and "Swiss Army Chainsaw." Grim sometimes uses spell books to create specific magical effects, but the scythe is always involved in his magic and he usually simply points it and wills whatever he wants to happen, which produces a blast from the Scythe and the desired result. It can also be used to create portals to different places and dimensions in space and time. The Scythe is an extremely powerful item, but there are other artifacts in the GA universe which, while it's hard to compare directly, are at least as powerful (Eris's Golden Apple of Discord and Chaos), or even more powerful (the tooth fairy's Gold Star Scepter or Horror's Hand). It is usually stolen from him (A list was stated by Boogey in Billy & Mandy's Big Boogey Adventure), something he now seemingly does not pay any attention to ("Mon, I stopped carin' like five episodes ago!")
Bottomless Trunk
Grim has many other supernatural items, and they are kept in his trunk. Grim usually reveals specific supernatural item when the plot needs it. Also, Billy often digs into Grim's trunk, revealing many objects that Grim keeps for no determined reason. Billy has found many of them, like Merlin's underwear, a Voo-Doo doll, shrunken head, Monkey's Paw, Eye of Vecna, Scroll of magic missile, Medusa's head, and others (it should be noted that Billy shows an extensive knowledge during those times). Billy and Mandy (mostly Billy) often misuse Grim's supernatural items, which almost always ends with disaster. For example, in Brown Evil, Billy thought that Grim's "Evil Powder" is salt and used it to make brownies. Brownies Billy made attracted zombies from all over the world, and soon Billy's house was under a siege. In the Billy & Mandy video game Billy finds chaos causing Mojo Balls in his trunk.
Love Interests
Throughout the series, Grim has shown romantic interest in many women of the show, although is very unsuccessful with dating them. Despite this, he once dated "Pinface"'s sister and openly complains about ditching her for not being able to make out with her (this was due to the pins on her head).
Grim shows a clear interest in women and, whilst he may show attraction to gothic women in particularly, such as Atrocia and Malaria, when he had skin girls in the mall flirted with him. Billy's mom (whom he made a figurine of and role played in a bathtub[1], falling in love with him).
Along with many others, Grim developed an infatuation or crush on Eris for a while earlier on in the series, but later on his feelings for her seemed to fade, presumably due to the growing rivalry that came about between the two sides and perhaps because of Eris' extremely harsh rejection of him.
